What I understood was that in order to capture the bandit, a sacrifice was needed to be made, in this case, burning down the forest, and possibly, burn anyone else who was unfortunate to be within the forest.
Similarly, stopping the Joker required great sacrifices, one was Batman taking the blame for Dent's crimes.
It just shows how far the lengths must go in order to defeat evil in both scenarios.

@@jaan08011 They must have evacuated the forest and the village within it.... Otherwise they become worse than the bandit itself.

I love how Michael Caine’s Alfred in the Dark Knight Trilogy always dropped wisdom on Bruce, and definitely knew Batman’s villains better than he did based on that same wisdom enough to inform him. The best part of that is he used ordinary people’s mindsets in lesser situations to compare to “sophisticated” minded villains. He’s the best version of Alfred so far, and I really don’t understand why any of the trilogy got so much hate. They were the closest thing to modern day society we’ve ever got from a superhero genre, and tbh it’s sad how that can only happen with a character adaptation rather than the exact company who owns the character rights.

Some amazing cinematography here. After the "some men just want to watch the world burn" line, the music changes, and it shows the Bat computer analyzing the Joker. The Joker theme plays and Batman, with all of his skills, technology, and intuition, is using everything to try to understand this man all while the Joker is laughing at him through the TV. He is literally mocking him trying to figure him out. That is such brilliant detail work that it reminds me how perfect this movie really is.

As a Burmese, I immediately switched on when Alfred began telling Bruce about Burma. It might not mean much to someone who isn't Burmese but it did to me. His analogy is powerful but not accurate.
The bandit he referenced was more likely a Robin Hood than someone evil like the Joker. Throughout Burma's sad history, much of its resources were pillaged from various ethnic regions. The Bandit was throwing away the precious gems (which Burma has plenty of) because he knew it belonged to the people of these regions - not to some wealthy buyer. In that part of the world where the people are devout Buddhists, they believe there is more to gain in the after life than in the present life. They really believe this. So those that are devout will do all they can to carry out good and not be swayed by the allure of earthly wealth. Whether you have faith or not, you'll appreciate this when you see it first hand. Go and travel Burma. If you can, visit the Kachin State up in the north where gems like the one the child was holding used to be easily picked up from rivers.
This story is not made up. It's very real. The script writer must've had a first hand encounter or knew someone who did because there is no way this was pulled out of thin air. To throw in something about Burma in a movie like this was very intelligent. In addition to this, referencing the former capital as 'Rangoon' tells me the writer is well read and may have a strong British colonial education. Very few in today's age know that 'Yangon' was once called by this name. Fitting how it was mentioned by Alfred (who is a Brit).

Htut Win but if you look closely, the joker is way more than just a chaotic evil figure, but actually kind of like a Robin Hood of his own right. He bankrupted the mob, and forced Batman into temporary retirement because his existence worsens crime elevation.

    • @HarryGillen
      @HarryGillen 5 років тому +45

@@joshuachang5210 Hard to say that's his real motivation. The Joker said time and time again his only intention was to sow seeds of discontent, to bring out the worst in people, to pull the rug out from under society and expose humanity for the primal animals they really are. His attraction to Gotham was 100% due to the vigilante methods of batman, an individual operating outside the system who doesn't play by society's rules. The message joker wanted to send to batman, and to Gotham, is that if you're not going to play by the rules, then you really aren't going to play by the rules... I'll expose these people and show everyone the dark, ugly truth that lurks beneath us, and hold absolutely nothing back. You wanted to bring down the mob and enact justice without the rule of law, then I'll do you one more, and bring down society entirely.
That's a counterweight to the Robin Hood mentality - the Joker didn't side with the people, he sided with the crazies. His allegiance was solely to the darkest shades of humanity, and that's what made him the consummate "unstoppable force" against the immovable object of Batman.

@@HarryGillen The Joker has different theories about this scar: then you'd better not count him on anything, including him claiming himself to be an agent of chaos.
And notice that the Joker isn't necessarily trying to bring down the society. If that is the case, the Joker wouldn't reveal his "ace in the hole", which then enables Batman to sacrifice his own reputation and save Dent's. Letting Batman take the blame also forces him to retire, which stops crimes from escalating, therefore saving Gotham. If such really is a part of the Joker's plan, then sure he sides with the people.

honestly this perfectly incapsulates what makes the joker such a great villain he doesn't follow logic or conventions he simply does what he wants.

"I remember when I was with Special Forces. Seems a thousand centuries ago. We went into a camp to inoculate the children. We left the camp after we had inoculated the children for polio, and this old man came running after us and he was crying. He couldn't see. We went back there and they had come and hacked off every inoculated arm. There they were in a pile: a pile of little arms."

All the shots of Batman perched on some skyscraper are all so good in this trilogy. My favorite is in Batman begins when he’s hanging on the gargoyles.

I like how they portray Batman doing actual detective work but don’t make this a slow detective movie

A one sentence summation of the Joker in every single iteration of the character, not just this movie.

Some people try to convince themselves that even the worst people are just selfish and shortsighted, that any act of horror can be traced to another horror. That those who are everything that's wrong with the world are those we disagree with ideologically.
I think this is one of the most powerful scenes in history for acknowledging an uncomfortable truth. Evil exists.
