- Hey guys, I saw a video Joe Simpson did and loved his kayak seat upgrade, had to try it out on my little pelican bandit and show y’all. I love it. DO this if you're Fishing from a Kayak like this!!!

Just had it out this evening. I made the aluminum bar about 17 inches wide. And mounted the seat in a lower position. It is far more comfortable than the pelican seat. And no stability issues!

I took your idea and instead of pvc in the back I just did another aluminum bar across the back of seat.
I did the exact. better view and more comfotrable

For those of you who are asking, YES, it completely changes the center of gravity. Don’t go to high with that seat. There are simple ways to mount this seat much lower in the boat.
+Saltwater Saddle Tramp if you know a way to mount this seat lower in kayak like this please share it here so we can all have the info. I’d love to see it! Yes it does change the center of gravity and it’s different for every rider. I personally didn’t notice too much difference.
Mine is mounted flush to the bottom of the kayak. When you take the old seat back off cut it off leaving a part of the black tab. Drill two holes through that and the seat bottom edge. Use two stainless screws to attach the back of the seat. Drill two holes in the front edge of the seat near the old seat strap attachment points. A few zip ties can attach the front.. you can drill two slots about half way up the seat back and use the Pelican seat strap on the new seat. I used the exact same seat but mine is mounted all the way down on the kayak. Still changes the center of gravity but not to bad. Way more comfortable seat!

Thanks for the video. I put the wise seat in my sit top Pelican. Used all the materials you recommended. Haven’t tried it on the water yet.

I would guess that you could get a rubber grommet for the square hole that you have on either side of the aluminum square tubing. Then you won’t get junk in that tube and it will keep it from being a potentially sharp edge exposed.
Nice job but I’m sure it’s a lot harder than “ allakazam, astral projection” we’re done! 😁. Saying it was stressful, at least for me if I attempted it, would be an understatement.
I’m not too worried about the tube since I always rinse down the kayak when I’m done. Edges were sanded with emery cloth and are not sharp. The only real stressful part was making the 3/4” pvc part in the back, it’s takes some fooling with to get it at the right height- also I broke a few pieces trying to drill out the big holes without a pilot. Definitely use pilot holes on the pvc. Aside from that it wasn’t a bad build. The reward is totally worth it. Check out joe Simpson’s video linked within to see where I got this

Thanks to both of you! I saw Joe's video and just attempted to mod on my own Future Beach 124F. Ran into all kinds of problems... Came back in the house and watched this vid--Trevor solved the riddle. While the boat seat I purchased at WalMart looks identical, it wasn't Wise brand... I ordered the Wise seat on Amazon and will be returning the impostor!

Haven’t really noticed much change in stability from the original setup. I’d say it’s all good!

You would have to remove the seat it’s not that hard though, just have some spare zip ties

I never did make a specific video Alex. But overall I did not notice much change in stability. Way more comfortable though! Paddling was the same too
Where did you get the square tubing from?
Lowe’s in the hardware section, but you should be able to find this at most home improvement/ hardware stores.

As long as you have the two back points this should work, but with all DIY, you may have to use some imagination and fool around with stuff before you make any holes in your kayak
It seems like the backrest would be leaning too far back

I would opt for the wellnuts again and again. Rivets are too permanent for me if I mess something up or want to change it later. Stability is pretty good, I’ll make a video on it soon. Sorry y’all I’ve been busy
Sorry one more question. I just bought the 1/4x20 wellnuts. What size drill bit did you use?
It depends on the OD of the wellnut. You want to drill a hole just big enough for the wellnut to fit snuggly into. When you tighten the screw the well nut expands to seal and grip the kayak. Try to match a drill bit to the well nut itself.

You don’t need outriggers. Don’t listen to one guy, make the choice for yourself. I fished this kayak in plenty of water, calm and rough- never fell out.
On the fishing version of this Kayak Pelican did exactly that. What are you talking about?

I GOT COMPLACENT AFTER 5+ TRIPS.
On a 12 foot kayak I was reaching back for a drink and a tiny wake nudged my kayak. It surprised me and that made me twist around giving the kayak just enough momentum to roll it.
If you plan on raising your seat... put a loose and ready marker bouey in or on your kayak so you know where all your stuff sank!
Can you still stack them afterwards for transport?
