    Just as the spine animates the body, but isn’t visible from the outside, so the spine of your work directs your work but isn’t the work itself.
    J.S. Bach’s music clearly had a spine. Something that pulled the strings behind his compositions. He didn’t conform to the popular trends of his day; he stuck with mastering counterpoint. I’d argue that maybe counterpoint was Bach’s spine, and that’s how we got one of the greatest works of music ever penned: The Art of the Fugue.

    Many greats have looked backwards from their day, look at Bob Dylan he used archaic folk music as the spine of his work and was eventually able to create something unique
