We all have things we avoid. Yet, some of these avoided things are vital. As artists, sometimes we’ve been conditioned into ignoring the things we need.
I found out that I was hiding from myself recently. I listen to a lot of avant-garde music. If I check the metrics on my Spotify, it shows. Yet this deep love for complex music isn’t reflected in my compositions.
I knew this, but part of me didn’t want to change. So I hid my work. Music prototypes just sat there in a folder, and I didn’t record many of my piano improvisations. Since they were all-out attempts at creating what I truly loved, I was sensitive to how others might react to them.
