    The Mars rover, Curiosity, is the latest in a long line of missions to Mars: landers sent to scoop its soil and study its rocks, orbiters sent to map its valleys and ridges.
    They are all asking the same question. Did liquid water once flow on this dry and dusty world? Did it support life in any form? And are there remnants left to find? The science that comes out of these missions may help answer a much larger, more philosophical question.
    Is our planet Earth the norm, in a galaxy run through with life-bearing planets? Or is Earth a rare gem, with a unique make-up and history that allowed it to give rise to living things? On Mars, Curiosity has spotted pebbles and other rocks commonly associated with flowing water.
    It found them down stream on what appears to be an ancient river fan, where water flowed down into Gale Crater. This shows that at some point in the past, Mars had an atmosphere, cloudy skies, and liquid water flowing. So what could have turned it into the desolate world we know today?
    One process that very likely played a role goes by the unscientific name, "sputtering." Like the other planets in our solar system, Mars is lashed by high-energy photons from the Sun. When one of these photons enters the atmosphere of a planet, it can crash into a molecule, knocking loose an electron and turning it into an ion. The solar wind brings something else: a giant magnetic field. When part of the field grazes the planet, it can attract ions and launch them out into space.
    Another part might fling ions right into the atmosphere at up to a thousand kilometers per second. The ions crash into other molecules, sending them in all directions like balls in a game of pool. Over billions of years, this process could have literally stripped Mars of its atmosphere, especially in the early life of the solar system when the solar wind was more intense than it is today.
    Sputtering has actually been spotted directly on another dead planet, Venus. The Venus Express mission found that solar winds are steadily stripping off lighter molecules of hydrogen and oxygen. They escape the planet on the night side... then ride solar breezes on out into space.
    This process has left Venus with an atmosphere dominated by carbon dioxide gas... a heat trapping compound that has helped send surface temperatures up to around 400 degrees Celsius. The loss of Venus' atmosphere likely took place over millions of years, especially during solar outbursts known as coronal mass ejections.
    If these massive blast waves stripped Venus and Mars of an atmosphere capable of supporting life how did Earth avoid the same grim fate? We can see the answer as the solar storm approaches earth. Our planet has what Mars and Venus lack - a powerful magnetic field generated deep within its core.
    This protective shield deflects many of the high-energy particles launched by the Sun. In fact, that's just our first line of defense. Much of the solar energy that gets through is reflected back to space by clouds, ice, and snow.
    The energy that earth absorbs is just enough to power a remarkable planetary engine: the climate. It's set in motion by the uneveness of solar heating, due in part to the cycles of day and night, and the seasons. That causes warm, tropical winds to blow toward the poles, and cold polar air toward the equator.
    Wind currents drive surface ocean currents. This computer simulation shows the Gulf Stream winding its way along the coast of North America. This great ocean river carries enough heat energy to power the industrial world a hundred times over.
    It breaks down in massive whirlpools that spread warm tropical waters over northern seas. Below the surface, they mix with cold deep currents that swirl around undersea ledges and mountains. Earth's climate engine has countless moving parts: tides and terrain, cross winds and currents -- all working to equalize temperatures around the globe.
    Over time, earth developed a carbon cycle and an effective means of regulating green house gases. In our galaxy, are still-born worlds like Mars the norm? Or in Earth, has Nature crafted a prototype for its greatest experiment... Life?

    Here's the crazy part: Mars probably had a magnetic field earlier in its history, which (like Earth) is caused by magma shifting around the mantle and creating a dynamo.
    There's a theory that a series of very large asteroids crashed into Mars half a billion years ago, disrupting the mantle and disabling the magnetic field. If one or two had been off just a _little_ to the right, we'd have next-door neighbours right now.

      Shit like that ^ is the reason. Instead of dissing other peoples ideologies and beliefs we should accept them. Understand them . And let them be. The fuck happened to the phrase agree to disagree? Its possible to accept someone elses beliefs without compromising your own. Instead people would rather bitch & moan about whos wrong or right, thus you have the shitty humanity we cohabit.

    • @nomadspiritvids
      @nomadspiritvids 9 років тому +3

      ShajneSmith I understand your want for less bitching and moaning and for people to be more understanding. However, with the topic of 'belief', the problem is that not everybody can be right and quite a number of the population are now wanting the truth, for better or worse.
      Back in the day, for example, all the Christians would think Muslim beliefs were false, and the Muslims would think the Christian's were false. In fact, every religion thought every other religion had it wrong!
      Now people are realising it's better to just find out what actually happened and working together to find out the answers. I think we're in a good place now actually!
      (Unfortunately, there will always be some that don't want to investigate further and hence the bitching and moaning will go on for a while I expect.) but it's not a reason to call humanity shitty.

    • @ShajneSmith
      @ShajneSmith 9 років тому +3

      Dave Browne I see what you mean. I don't think there is a such thing as "right" in the world . 7 billion people = entirely too much diversity for there to ever be one universal truth. Whether you're talking about science or religion , everything is just a bunch of theories . As far as religion goes. Most of them follow similar principles. Christianity & Islam for example aren't too far apart. The only reason people fight is they focus on labels instead of the messages themselves. The believers calling opposing religions wrong aren't true followers. If they were they would know that these religions are literally the same morals and followings interpreted by a different culture. And as far as science . There isn't a lot that disproves Theism except the obvious fact they haven't seen a god in the clouds. And the timeline of existence. For believers, Following the books(Bible, Quran) so closely , & scientists following their hypotheses so closely ends up creating too many close minded people. In my opinion religion is understanding the world through the spirit, and science is understanding the world through the mind. If we bring both of those together we're closer to universal unity. Only reason I call humanity is shitty is their aren't enough people who can be open minded enough to understand other perspectives, instead they speak their opinions like they're facts and scold anybody that dare say anything different

    One theory I heard, was that Phobos and Deimos (Mars's moons) were too small to keep the iron core of the planet spinning, as soon as the core quits spinning, no more magnetic field. Our moon is quite large compared to Mars's moons, so provides more gravitational pull, big enough to do the job, so to speak.
    Just a theory, but a good one I think.

      Have you heard this?
      The earth used to rotate on a flat axis. Due South in a line and predominant in our sky was Mars, Saturn and Jupiter.
      Something, perhaps Venus or what is now the asteroid belt, came in between either the Earth and Mars or between Mars and Saturn.
      This created an enormous plasma arc between it and Mars thus blowing the crust and water off of Mars, with potentially some of it landing on Earth. (The scar resembles electrical tendrils and not smooth water erosion)
      This perturbation caused Jupiter, Saturn Venus, Mars and the Earth to assume their current orbital positions around the sun.
      This heavenly cataclysm flung the earth causing massive floods and the ice age.
      When the earth started to settle into its new orbit, we first saw the moon, then we saw the sun.
      There is a lot to it, but that is the jist of it

    It's bogus to think we're that special. Just because we haven't found any other Earth-like planets doesn't mean there aren't any. We're still primitive, our sight beyond our planet is so limited we have no idea what's out there in neighboring systems, let alone the Galaxy.

    • @Qewbicle
      @Qewbicle 6 років тому +7

      The odds of life existing is considered so slim because we have one working example out of billions. But still with our billions of examples, we can't tell with certainty if there's no life on other planets in our solar system. All we can say about life on our other planets, they aren't sending signals, and the conditions are so bleak that if they were there, they'd be microbial.
      With our next nearest exoplanets, we can't even get a good enough look. If life were there and they had a similar intelligence and had the same time frame of evolution. They would've started to broadcast transmissions about the same time we did. At the speed of light, they haven't picked up our signals, nor would we have picked up theirs.
      If you looked through a straw at the darkest part of the sky. Just within the size of space there are billions of galaxies, each containing billions of solar systems. The chances of other life capable planets out there are considered good. The distance between them is the problem. Even if we are not the exception, we are special, because the odds of everything coming together just right are just to slim.
      As an aside, there is a theory that life on earth was reseeded after a mass extinction. In this theory, life was knocked out into space, and one of these life bearing rocks eventually came back to earth. In my thought, even if earth was the one exception, a rock flung out from that era could've made it else where seeding that planet too.
      On the idea of us being primitive, it may seem that we have less time in the cosmos as a species, and thus we'd be less evolved. But another theory is that mass extinctions and changing harsh conditions was the engine that pushed evolution to occur faster than normal. This would mean that we might not see evidence of intelligent life only because they have not reached the same technical knowledge of radio transmissions and space travel yet. We've been transmitting for only 100 years. We've had trains longer than that, and in that era you would've thought we were considered non-primitive. Are they content without radios and a space program, maybe.

Also then in a couple million years after the Nova a new sun and planes will form. Also fun fact, our sun has exploded already before but it was a different star but in the same place. It because a supergiant and super Nova BOOM and over time our sun formed and the existing matter around it made the planets. We know this because we have a lot of heavy elements in our solar system. Which is made by super novas.

      The Gaming J.D the fuck would a red giant have a super nova that's not possible it will not even explode it will shrink into a white dwarf you dumbass and after white dwarf the sun will be a black dwarf only super novas are for the stars 500 times bigger than the sun super giant stars turning into a super red giant it's too big so in the core black metal occurred means the red super giant has seconds to live it will have a super nova in that it's a red super giant the sun is only a dot to that super red giant those type of stars will have super novas not mid sized stars like our sun super giant stars is the only one will have a super nova after that a planetary nebula will occur the super nova gasses inside that it's either a black hole but that rarely happens it has more chance of become a neutron star as big as Jupiter if it becomes a black hole it would have sucked all the gasses and became bigger but mid sized stars don't explode instead it will die slowly that will happen to our sun and either turn into a white dwarf or black dwarf a white dwarf is like a black hole sucking other stars energy and when the white dwarf couldn't take the power it will collide into a star and have that super nova
      here's a fact small stars smaller than our own star has longer lives than mid sized and super giants stars
      Small stars have hundreds of billions of years to live maybe trillions the sun can only live billions sadly super giant stars can only live millions they have the shortest time to shine before they explode

      ***** Sadly the idea of an intelligent civilisation the way we project is a much much lower possibility. One must remember that just because a species in intelligent, doesn't mean they have a "civilization" (so to speak). Dolphins are my favorite way of putting it in perspective. Since the average dolphin is close in intelligence to a homosapien, yet they never ended up with any kind of civilization. A similar example would be primates. So odds of intelligent life - reasonably high; odds of human like civilizations (like we all daydream about) are significantly lower.
      Science can be a harsh mistress.

Earth and Venus wouldn’t be good platforms due to one which would be destroying any carbon life which enters its atmosphere, and the other having natural predators or a civilization, it would be easier to simply build ships and have those collect

      it is a possibility, not a certainty. We literally don't know how likely it is. We do know that there are many planets that fall in the goldilock zone, where liquid water is possible, but all other conditions to get abiogenesis, a stable enough environment like earth, a magnetic shield, a big enough body of water to temper the global climate, having a Jupiter comet catcher to lower the rate of mass extinction events etc. etc. etc.
      it certainly is possible knowing the vast amount of viable planets that might be out there, but guaranteed? I don't know.

      You seem convinced, i'm not, because no matter how many earth like planets are out there, we don't know how likely it is for all factors to come together and have abiogenesis.
      It would be really nice for someone like you, claiming it's a certainty, to back it up with a decent source and not send someone to scour the entire internet, thus i go by Hitchen's counterclaim: that which is asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence.

So now we have the education and are trying to go back to mars and see if it's livable.

The universe is most definitely alive!

      al len Alright, Len, You answer the question; If you came across something unique; from outer space, or the bottom of the ocean, or saw it through an electron microscope,
      How would You decide if it was "alive" or not?
      If it moves? Plants don't move. They take in energy, so do hurricanes and tornadoes, and *They Move*.
      If they inherently can reproduce? Asses are a cross breed between horses and donkeys and are sterile, so are seedless orange trees (people grow them from cuttings). But forest fires can spread and start offshoots to "breed".
      Why are Asses and seedless orange trees considered alive, but forest fires aren't?
      What about thinking & having consciousness?
      Nope, of the six or seven kingdoms of life, only the Animal kingdom has that. And, only Plants, Fungus and Animals are Multicellular organisms, so that can't be it.
      So ... how would you judge if something previously undiscovered is "alive"?
      (pinch)
      Hmm?

    • @timwitt94
      @timwitt94 10 років тому

    What seems to be left out is that Mars used to have a magnetic field when it had a liquid core but when the core cooled enough to solidify, it lost the field and the protection from solar wind. It also caused great cracks in the crust when the core shrank, and volcanoes as the last of the liquid core broke free.

    Maybe if we sent a rover that could dig, we might find some minerals in the crust. Maybe even a fossil to see if life once existed on Mars.

      +ᐯ!ᑭᗴᖇ I know. But I mean a bigger rover that could actually get through the ground with ease, we could find something interesting.

      CrypticssTV I mean that is not a bad idea but it would take extremely long and I don't think the rover has the technology to do so because Mars surface is hard ice.
