  • New vehicles are coming with less and less paint. What’s the thinnest measurement you’ve encountered on a new vehicle?

I recently did an assessment of a car for detail. The average paint reading was 90 to 105 microns. The client wanted "perfection". I told him that I could enhance the paint and remove the spiderwebbing, but that would be as far as I could go with it, as there were some deeper scratches that I said I could even out using the 5-5-5 method. He thanked me for my time and said he wanted "perfection". You can't get them all.

Great explanation of today's paint Yvan & how to work with it. The paint is so thin nowadays u can see the primer coat under the top coat on some manufacturers. 😬

I did a Dodge Demon that measured at 180-200 microns which is the most I’ve seen on a new car

Great video again sir congratulations. If a PTG cannot measure each individual layer of the paint, how do we know that the manufactures and putting less clear coat, and not just thinner primer , base coat, or anti-corrosion coat? Some manufacturers here in Europe they claim that they have left the same clear coat as in the past but the other layers are getting thinner.

A few years ago the total of e coat, primer and Basecoat was under 2 mils or 50 microns. The clear was also approximately 2 mils. They are reducing everything, but mostly the clear coat.

Very informative. The thinning of paint suggests that we'll need to do plenty of research as to what coating to apply the first time, as there won't be enough paint on the vehicle to survive the process of _removing_ a "dud" coating in order to apply another manufacturer's product.

going to be popular all in one and cleaner polish revival with all those low numbers paint thickness ~!! now more then ever, a good sacrificial layer over the paint is a must, either PPF, or Ceramic Coating, or at least a good sealer with continious topping during maintenance. drying aid protection also... so glad i got a good paint Gauge a few years back! Best tool ever!

I can say "Amen!" to that, Yvan! I measured the paint on my 2021 Mazda6 Carbon Edition recently, and some spots on the hood were 3 mils! 😳 Needless to say, I very quick/light paint enhancement is all it's going to get, and then it's getting topped with Gyeon Mohs Evo.

In the body shop world, we've been seeing this for a while. Now that I'm in the detailing business, I was ready for it. That's good info, unfortunately, a lot of detailers will still hammer away at the paint. It's going to be a costly mistake when, not IF, they go through the paint!

So with this in mind do you think we will see more products that are an alternative to polishing a car? I know Optimum had a product like this and I have seen some others as well.

This really puts a responsibility to detailers to inform our customers and to actively listen to them. You have been saying for a very long time that the customer wants a clean and shiny car. They're not necessarily going over the vehicle with an inspection light. I really think like you said this puts protection at the forefront here! Let's work on prevention of paint defects and in return that yields a much better result for everyone!

I've been using Carpro essence on car's with low readings as it has semi permanent filling capabilities and leaves a high gloss finish and it's a coating primer aswell. So coatings bond really well to it

I noticed the paint getting thinner, and I have been doing light polishing for a few years. Who knew that Yvan would tell me I would be doing this more? I can see the need for paint coatings to help protect that paint for longer. Thanks, Yvan, for letting me know I was on the right track. The thinnest, most consistent measurement I found was a 2021 Toyota pickup. The paint was 3.5 mils. I did a light polish just to clean the paint. Thankfully, it was not swirled up. The Lexus I did has 5-6 mills.

Yvan I've had an idea for several years of a long term filler product. Traditional fillers I think are kaolin clay based, not sure if that's in the same family as kaopolite sf powder which I have 2kg of to make a liquid clay like the diamondite spray clay. My idea was to apply this long term filler product and let it cure and bond and the fillers last six to twelve months then the customer comes back for a reapplication again. Thus no paint removed. Probably not possible to make but ideas like this pop into my head sometimes. The only system that is close to this is the old GLARE sealant glaze system in which each successive product in the system locks in the previous one. Zero then micro then advanced sealer. Silica based. I still have those but only last three months or less filler wise. Perhaps there will be a burst of development in new types of ultra fine polishes due to the need to preserve paint thickness. Food for thought for the manufacturers and the industry

And that’s why I invested in Icon Rocklear. It adds rock hard clear coat to the paint and fills in 1500 grit sand scratches even. I only do this service on high end cars that have not enough paint to correct safely or cars that are going to be used and abused and driven through the car scratch.

@@Detailers-Business-Academy I can do a small car in about 4-5 hours. Bigger or exotic cars are more work. Depending on condition of the vehicle you can either wash, clay bar, prep, and apply or for deeper scratched vehicles you can compound with a rotary and aggressive compound after claying and then apply after prepping. We use lacquer thinner to swell the paint to get a good bond of the product and we tack clothe the panel before applying. Product self levels. It makes x cote look cute because it fills way more and has infused chemical and UV protection. It originally was a 5 year warranty but now it is lifetime warranty underwritten by an insurance company. Cost for a small vehicle here in California starts are $1,200. If they need a buff first we start at $1,500. Holograms or buffer trails leave a great anchor pattern for the product to grab into. So it fills them in, no need to finish polish. If you really want to knock it out of the park, you can sand with 3000 grit the whole vehicle and apply. Materials cost of the Icon Rocklear product, tape, tack clothe, compound, etc is about $150 per vehicle on average. We have been killing it doing front ends for $600. They end up coming back to get the whole vehicle done because it looks so much better than the rest of the vehicle. If you go to my IG page, there is a black Hummer H2 before and after. That vehicle was compounded before applying.
