Perfect theme, it sounds scary and threatening but royal as well, representing bowser as 1 a monsterous hulking giant of a beast and 2 a royal king, most people tend to forget bowser is a king, and his castle as represented by this theme is a place of royalty where a great king resides. in short, AWESOME THEME
It could also be Mario laying down unconscious after one of Bowser's attack, with Peach watching him and crying thinking he's dead. The music speeding up would be Mario waking up to face Bowser. But yeah, your idea works too.

I’ve generated a story to the piece hope u like it. The opening takes place during the great mushroom war between the koopas of bowser’s kingdom and the mushroom people of the mushroom kingdom; it’s dark and still on the battlefield with each solider looking intently at their enemy that they would destroy. (Initial theme+second wave) King Bowser raised his fist up on the darkened sky and roared,”koopas! Charge!!!” The mushroom soldiers did the same and a horrific battle ensued. (Mid-way in the music) The mushrooms were winning and gaining the upper hand from the koopas and this angered bowser very much. “I will not submit to a bunch of short wimpy mushrooms!!!!” He yelled and charged at the army bring no mercy to them. (Sad portion of the music) After the battle, many of the soldiers bodies were carried off for proper burial. while bowser jr. looked at a distance through a telescope to search for his dad. A knock was at the huge, wooden door. “I’ll get it!” Shouted iggy one of the 8 koopaling children. A wounded koopa solider fumbles in and shouts, “he is dead the great king is dead!!” Too late bowser jr. looked at the last body and tears welled up. (Remainder of the piece) A royal funeral takes place after the war. Jr. takes a rose and placed in a bouquet of white roses on the coffin of his late father. Months went by and then years contemplating and then 20 years later his anger was like his father and he would rise as the next heir to the throne.
