  • Bagged a GOLD MEDAL 🏅at the Welsh National Homebrew Competition in September 2019, in this video I'll be sharing my thoughts on the experience, the recipe, method (Links below) and judges feedback for my International Pale Lager (02A) as well as some lessons learnt on the other two beers I submitted 😂
    Huge thank you to all of the organisers, volunteers and sponsors at The Welsh National Homebrew Competition. I forgot to mention that I also had about 500g of hops and a box of beers with the medal! 😃
    Feel free to add any other tips that might help fellow brewers in the comments.
    Looking forward to seeing your recipe suggestions with the new (to me!) hops 👍

    Nothing like GOLD. Looks fantastic. The best beers are usually simple - showcases perfect technique. Well Done! Extra points for attempting anything with rhubarb...Maybe a version of your Pale Lager with Jarrylo - supposed to yield fruity, spicy notes. I've used Liberty - not much to work with but might do for a dry hop?

    Congrats, well done. Maybe the "30-A, Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer" is the perfect category for the Rubarb Saison. What do you think? (ps: English isn´t my first language, is a work in progress). Congrats again for the Gold!

    That's a brilliant achievement mate. Well done! Love the medal. A nice change from the certificate only competitions I've seen and ones I've entered. The beer itself looks absolutely cracking. Any punter would be more than happy having a glass of that served to them. Cheers Dino 🍻

    Congrats on the win, have you taken the medal off yet? Sterling and liberty are definitely lager type hops, not heard much about jarrylo. Maybe you could do an NZ Pilsner type beer with all three or go down the tried and tested pale ale route - bitter with magnum and all late additions for each hop.

      Cheers BBB, No, not taken it off yet! 😂 Thanks for the beer suggestions, I much prefer the thought of a NZ Pilsner rather than a few brews lol

    I've talked to judges and they have said don't worry how you have brewed it. It's all about ho it tastes. I made Mango wheat beer based on Graham hapless recipe. I was told it should have been entered as a sour so I understand your frustration.

    congrats on the Gold Griffo! Be good to see you again at the monthly homebrew club meets in Cardiff - next one is tomorrow! You can get good advice at those from BCJP judges as there are a few of us who go each month.

      Homebrew Griffo awesome. People are bringing along their entered beers, with feedback so we can all taste and compare. I’ll be bringing a APA, DIPA and Raspberry Wheat. All scored well but no medals for me this time! Should be a good meet.

    Fantastic result on the Pilsner bud! Always good to get a big boost like that! On the rhubarb one I ahve only ever brewed stouts with fruit so unfortunately not sure. Perhaps fermentation temperature could help bring the saison flavour up to a par with the 2.5kg of rhubarb? Maybe ferment a couple degrees warmer to accentuate? Lastly, mate that shelf...I spend most of the video waiting for the beer to fall off :-) cheers!!!

    • @HomebrewGriffo
      @HomebrewGriffo  4 роки тому

      Cheers buddy! Yes, I think I will increase the temps next time and bring back the rhubarb a bit. I'm hoping to get to my local HB club and share the beer to get some feedback on the best category going forward - loving the challenge though! The shelf, you can tell I don't trust it either, it's solid but at an angle, living on the edge! haha Cheers

    You !! YOU !!! Stopped me bagging a hat-trick of golds ya git :P
    Well done though bud ! You bagged me by a few points so certainly beaten me...
    Your first bottle of that amber may have had an infection, generally the second bottle should be opened to check and review as well
    Other comps try national homebrew, brewcon, scottish, Anglian and LAB all do comps

      Hi Garreth!? 😂You know what, as soon as I noticed your two golds as well I felt for you I really did! Well done on your haul though fair play! This one was scored as a 39 and 41 so average 40. Marked down quite a bit due to the bitterness. Cheers

      @@HomebrewGriffo nailed it ! I can't complain, best result I ever had plus champion brewer - I'd have taken that :)
      Mine was averaged at 37 so you definitely took it with a few extra points. Shame I've run out wouldn't mind a swap for comparisons...

    Nice one, think I tried that one at the competition though I didn't judge that category. If I remember correctly it was a lovely beer. I'm slightly surprised neither of the judges suggested entering it as a German Pils rather than an international pale lager as that is a simila,r but more bitter, style.
    Also, thanks for reminding me I have some video from the competition to edit into something usable.

    • @TertiaryBrewing
      @TertiaryBrewing 4 роки тому +1

      Definitely tried the rhubarb saison, I thought it was pretty nice, rhubarb is a bit of a random ingredient as it varies a lot from year to year. It's very unlikely to be the same judges as last time. You are entirely correct in saying you should enter a beer as what it tastes like rather than what you brewed it as.

      There are usually 4 big BJCP competitions in the year, the Uk National in February, London Open in late Spring, Welsh in September and UKNHC in November. I might be adding a northern competition in the summer next year.

    Just looked up those hops and jarrylo was one I hadn't heard of. It sounds like it will suit a light beer such as kolsch. Sterling is very much a saaz hop and liberty would suit a Munich style lager. Know anyone with a award winning pilsner recipe as I would use the sterling in that.

      @@HomebrewGriffo I normally bottle and keg a brew and notice a massive difference in taste and consistency between the 2. Keg is always the better one. So when entering a competition i get average results but i know the beers is good.its just good from the keg.
