That was absolutely beautiful! The singing and harmonizing was wonderful and the dancing was gracefully and interesting. I have watched many of these ceremonies and this was the loveliest that I've seen and heard. Congratulations. The men sounded wonderful and had very nice and strong voices. I truly enjoyed this and have watched it over and over.

Years ago I went from the USA mainland to live in Australia for a few years. When the plane touched down in Fiji on the way over, about 15 or so Fijian ladies got on and all sat together. When the plane was lifting off, they all started to sing in beautiful harmony. I have no idea what they were singing about, but they were smiling, using hand motions, and singing the most beautiful song. I feel like they alone lifted the plane into the air. It was one of the most magical and beautiful moments in my life, which is saying a lot because I've traveled the world for a long time and seen some amazing stuff happen. But that moment in time still haunts me. When they were finished singing, all the passengers cheered like crazy on that plane. Looking around at them, I saw the most beautiful smiles as well. It really was something to hear and see. Thank you, Fijians, for that gorgeous liftoff music!

They are from the waikato, in Hamilton, within the area of ngati maahanga is where nga taiatea wharekura resides.
This poi was composed for their stand at the secondary school national competition in Whangarei back in 2012 which they won.

As a teenager way back, last century, I signed as crew on a tramp ship, when there were such things. It made its way slowly to South Pacific and Polynesia. For some islands we were about the only ship they'd see in almost a year. To gather copra from uninhabited islands, we'd take islanders & their families with us to surf boats in & out over coral reefs where our ship couldn't anchor. They'd live for weeks on the hatch tops under canvas stretched between lowered derricks. At night they sang and their harmonies, like as here, were magical. I got logged by the Old Man several times for sharing on those hatch tops the majesty of their culture. It was forbidden for (white) crew to fraternize with 'native' labor. But the memory of that year is vivid when I listen here.

The wiri is a side to side movement of the whole hand and is not a wriggling of the fingers. Different tribal groups have different styles of wiri. The wiri is said to represent the world around us, from the shimmering of the waters of a bright sunny day, to the heat waves rising from the ground to the wind rustling the leaves of the trees. Each tribal group comes from a unique environment and the different styles of wiri reflect this. The wiri is an integral part of Māori movement, seen in haka, as well as making the deceptive movements of Maori warriors, which is essential in the arts of combat.
