  • One night during our trip in Aotearoa we had a cultural exchange with the students at Nga Taiatea Wharekura. It was one of the first times either side had experienced a culture from over seas. It was one of the best nights during our time in New Zealand and helped create friendships that are still strong.

I am a Maori Living in Denver Colorado, Now and again I jump online to see how my little country is doing. well from this side of the world, we are in a good place with a variety of cultures living in New Zealand. Thank goodness for the new technology we have nowadays because when I want to I can take a trip down the lane and still feel the power and the Maori music of my people. Well, Done. Love from Colorado

I do not understand the language - but I love the music and the voices. The men sing like men and the girls dance with grace and warmth. What a wonderful culture.
When I was a kid I watched rugby and was thrilled by the Haka and I loved everything Maori ever since. What a nice people you are.

I am a West Melanesian from the famous Maluku Spice Islands located to the north of Australia where nutmeg and cloves originally come from. I am always touched whenever I hear my Maori brothers and sisters sing. Emotionally I feel deeply connected and I am sure we share common ancestry. Be blessed always. ❤

I'm from NZ now living in the UK and this music really makes me homesick. I had a lot of good exposure to Maori music when I was young and have long appreciated it. My only misgiving has been I was unable to learn Te Reo. At 65 now it's a bit late. And in London I haven't a clue where to learn. Arohanui!

Yes I was born in South Africa - that is where I watched and loved Rugby. Came to the USA in 1992 - (sadly no rugby) but I did see the All Blacks play here recently - the score was ridiculous :-) ...but the spectators got such a thrill from watching the All Blacks who were so spectacular and gracious.
Through UA-cam I first discovered Sir Howard Morrison and this was followed by me listening to more and more aspects of the Maori culture. I try to imitate the dance movements and tell my friends, who tell me that there is actual energy-power in doing Tai Chi movements, that I feel there is actual power in Maori dance: The first time I ever saw the All Blacks doing the Haka - I felt it was one of the most amazing experiences ever. That was the beginning:

Embarrassingly for me, my whanau are from the Waikato and yet i don't know the lyrics or actions (fluently) to this wiata. I grew up in Rangitikei as we traveled abit for dad to work but moved to Te Kuiti when i was 7. By 10 years old i was in Wellington where i remain today. We head back up to visit our whanau and "home" (Te Korapatu Marae) as much as we can but one thing i really wish i was exposed to alot more growing up was Kapa Haka. The schools i attended when moving to the city did not have a rich kapa haka presence so in that aspect i missed out on alot. Thanks to the likes of UA-cam etc and beautiful videos like this im able to teach myself what i should already know. Keep up the awesome work whanau!

It takes a tour of the region or tribal area of Tainui, the home of the Kingitanga movement in NZ. Princess Te Puea wrote it, if you look at the actions the girls are doing, it gives a hint to what the girls are singing, one example is "E hoe to waka ki Ngaruawahia" - paddle your canoe to Ngaruawahia - as the girls sing this, their actions are that of a paddler in a canoe - Ngaruawahia is where the home of the King is, the Buckingham Palace if you like, where guests are received, where celebrations of the King or Queens coronation occurs among other things... all tribes in NZ have a particular unique song that is a call to voice that unites them, hence the reference to an anthem, this is it for Tainui, Paikea for the tribe Ngati Porou and Rerenga Wairua for the tribe Nga Puhi are other examples. I'm from the other two tribes I listed but I love this song... almost makes me wish I was Tainui, almost lol Be like you loving Danny Boy more than God save the queen :-)

Maori is on Google Translate. If you copy and paste the words in you'll get some idea ok f what's being sung. I'm from the Ngati Kahungunu area and white but really appreciate Maori music. I had a lot of exposure to it in primary school and always remember the words. Later I was lucky to be able to understand a lot of Maori protocols which have helped me to understand things. I just regret I never had the opportunity to learn Maori (The Reo).

this song is a dedication to mahanama, uncle nichols when he was alive, all the men in the world war 2 in the battalion, because of the exchanges of soul tribal union, integration, and narrative set up. haha. uh. we're all cousins, so if u don't git wit da program, go way pliz. :D

    Ara tihei mauriora e (Tuhetia)
E noho (Tuhetia) te hiri o Waikato
E huri to kanohi ki te hauauru
Nga tai e ngunguru i waho o Te Akau
aue, he aue! Hi aue! aue, he aue!
To pikitanga ko te au o te rangi
    Ti heketanga ko karioi maunga
To hoe nga waka ko Whaingaroa
aue, he aue! Hi aue! aue, he aue!
