- One night during our trip in Aotearoa we had a cultural exchange with the students at Nga Taiatea Wharekura. It was one of the first times either side had experienced a culture from over seas. It was one of the best nights during our time in New Zealand and helped create friendships that are still strong.
I am a Maori Living in Denver Colorado, Now and again I jump online to see how my little country is doing. well from this side of the world, we are in a good place with a variety of cultures living in New Zealand. Thank goodness for the new technology we have nowadays because when I want to I can take a trip down the lane and still feel the power and the Maori music of my people. Well, Done. Love from Colorado

Size matters not.
Greetings from the netherlands...lots of love and lots of respect
I do not understand the language - but I love the music and the voices. The men sing like men and the girls dance with grace and warmth. What a wonderful culture.
When I was a kid I watched rugby and was thrilled by the Haka and I loved everything Maori ever since. What a nice people you are.
Where are you from? :)
Mata Tuidraki her name says south africa.
+Lorna duPreez The men are actually young teens.
Moari it's moari
Medenia Sivone its actually Māori
I am a West Melanesian from the famous Maluku Spice Islands located to the north of Australia where nutmeg and cloves originally come from. I am always touched whenever I hear my Maori brothers and sisters sing. Emotionally I feel deeply connected and I am sure we share common ancestry. Be blessed always. ❤
I'm from NZ now living in the UK and this music really makes me homesick. I had a lot of good exposure to Maori music when I was young and have long appreciated it. My only misgiving has been I was unable to learn Te Reo. At 65 now it's a bit late. And in London I haven't a clue where to learn. Arohanui!
Its never to late matua😉 they have online course but its always easier if you got someone learning with you
Kia Ora Koro lol hope all is good with you over there during this pandemic. Arohanui from back home 💙
@@theinc8288 Kia Ora, This put a smile on my dial. I'm on my own in a bedsit and it's no picnic locked down. I've got an immune deficiency which means if I get this thing I'm dead. Wish I was living back in NZ. I'm missing NZ. Can't move back as much as I'd love to 😭. Appreciated your comment!
Gary, it's not late. My mom, who is Colombian, is learning English at 71. She started last year.
Kia ora boii you still a young fella no worries just start easy say it without hesitation
Yes I was born in South Africa - that is where I watched and loved Rugby. Came to the USA in 1992 - (sadly no rugby) but I did see the All Blacks play here recently - the score was ridiculous :-) ...but the spectators got such a thrill from watching the All Blacks who were so spectacular and gracious.
Through UA-cam I first discovered Sir Howard Morrison and this was followed by me listening to more and more aspects of the Maori culture. I try to imitate the dance movements and tell my friends, who tell me that there is actual energy-power in doing Tai Chi movements, that I feel there is actual power in Maori dance: The first time I ever saw the All Blacks doing the Haka - I felt it was one of the most amazing experiences ever. That was the beginning:
I think the Asians call that chi lol as we call it Mana lol
All I know is the songs and the traditions of these great people haunt my soul! They remind me much of the Samoans, has a brand new second lieutenant in the Marine Corps I had a master sergeant and his family who were Samoans and probably some of the most wonderful finest people I've ever met be blessed

ALOHA and MAHALO! Mid 1980's, a group of Maori Ohana from Waikato came to PUNA on the Big Island of Hawaii. They taught us, the Puna Hui Ohana, the song and dance🤙Will never forget!!!👍❤💞
I have a question lol so will they change the name again when the next heir Is called to the throne??
@@curtismehana4231 Always
there are 9 original verses
Embarrassingly for me, my whanau are from the Waikato and yet i don't know the lyrics or actions (fluently) to this wiata. I grew up in Rangitikei as we traveled abit for dad to work but moved to Te Kuiti when i was 7. By 10 years old i was in Wellington where i remain today. We head back up to visit our whanau and "home" (Te Korapatu Marae) as much as we can but one thing i really wish i was exposed to alot more growing up was Kapa Haka. The schools i attended when moving to the city did not have a rich kapa haka presence so in that aspect i missed out on alot. Thanks to the likes of UA-cam etc and beautiful videos like this im able to teach myself what i should already know. Keep up the awesome work whanau!
i absolutely love this rendition. these students are amazing - beautiful harmonies and the boys give a nice manly feel to give compliment the girls. so proud to be kiwi. ka mau te wehi ki ō koutou nei mahi waiata! kia kaha:-)
Feel the power in the volume and the harmony. Beautiful
beautiful song!..I admire the Maori culture and the passion the people have.

There are kids that follow bushxt influences these days when their culture is 1000x more powerful.
Like this.
Agreed! This should be the younger generations "influence" not those posers on tiktok and Instagram.
If i wasn't born British then i would love to have been born a Maori.
Love this comment 💙
Mauriora e hoa🤙
Wow that's a lovely gesture 😊 Kia ora!
Umm it really depends on what time period you would have been born...
Because of when the pakeha came to new Zealand...
Ur welcome to my friend Aotearoa NewZealand amen 🙏
I still just love this version xxxx I often wonder where these awesome voices are these days, many blessings to you all xx
I have the strangest taste of music....... I love basically everything that’s not rap. Anything with strong cultural ties basically make my eyes water... so you probably see a picture of me sitting in a chair basically crying because of this
Love the manner in which this song is sung. The feeling is there
I envy the connectedness that is integral to this song and dance. It is spiritual and richly so.
Fucking beautiful was wonderful to here the voice of home.
Tears to my eyes and this was recommended whilst I'm here Croatia happy as
🙌🙌❤
I won't quite say F.... but my feelings as well. Been in the UK for 10 years now and am not able to settle back in NZ. So this music makes me very happy and sad.
Grew up in Waikato as a kid. Got taught this song in primary school and never knew it was the Waikato anthem until recently lol
Such proud strong voices. So emotional right now 😭❤️
My favourite Waiata. Makes me homesick and reminds me of my grandfather . x
We are so lucky to have such a rich culture in NZ.. very proud to be Kiwi! Interested to know where the visitors had come from..

I remember these actions from when I was a kid singing this in kapahaka. Can't wait for my children to get involved in kapahaka at school
Beautiful. Thank you Whanau. We sang this as part of my Waiata Te Timatanga Moar111 paper at Otago University in 2011.Best. Chur Karen and other kaiako xxx
Kia Ora , I’m a kiwi and I’m from a school we do this karakia everyday
As an ignorant Englishman can someone tell what the song is about, found it weeks ago and cannot stop watching it ,amazing.
Thanks
It takes a tour of the region or tribal area of Tainui, the home of the Kingitanga movement in NZ. Princess Te Puea wrote it, if you look at the actions the girls are doing, it gives a hint to what the girls are singing, one example is "E hoe to waka ki Ngaruawahia" - paddle your canoe to Ngaruawahia - as the girls sing this, their actions are that of a paddler in a canoe - Ngaruawahia is where the home of the King is, the Buckingham Palace if you like, where guests are received, where celebrations of the King or Queens coronation occurs among other things... all tribes in NZ have a particular unique song that is a call to voice that unites them, hence the reference to an anthem, this is it for Tainui, Paikea for the tribe Ngati Porou and Rerenga Wairua for the tribe Nga Puhi are other examples. I'm from the other two tribes I listed but I love this song... almost makes me wish I was Tainui, almost lol Be like you loving Danny Boy more than God save the queen :-)

@@MrCraigo8 on point bro waikato tainui pukana blehhhh!!!!
Maori is on Google Translate. If you copy and paste the words in you'll get some idea ok f what's being sung. I'm from the Ngati Kahungunu area and white but really appreciate Maori music. I had a lot of exposure to it in primary school and always remember the words. Later I was lucky to be able to understand a lot of Maori protocols which have helped me to understand things. I just regret I never had the opportunity to learn Maori (The Reo).
My school does te reo Māori and this is one of the songs i love it
This is so beautiful! I absolutely LOVE this!
This is SO beautiful
awsome never seen anything like it, the women with beautiful harmonies, very graceful actions and men who sound like men, this is the new zealand i remember from my childhood, the people. Cant not watch it over and over again.
