I think the reason a lot of people, particularly me, love Moonrise Kingdom so much is because of that child nostalgia it gives. I was twelve when I first saw this (and the first artsy film I ever watched as well) so a lot of love I have for it comes from that nostalgia and appreciation for something I had never experienced before, as well as the ability to really understand and empathize with the characters. I agree that there are better Wes Anderson films but my love for it kind of outshines all the others

Moonrise Kingdom is one of the best comfort films out there to me. I love the classical music soundtrack, the summery and retro aesthetic, and the simple story (carried by wonderful performances by both the adult and child actors). It doesn’t have the harshness or as many dark themes Anderson’s other films have, but is packed with charm, character, and emotion. I love Sam and Suzy’s relationship so much.
If I could live in any film setting, it would be New Penzance Island (without the hurricane part).

I actually did the whole fake getting married thing and would run off to where the counsellors couldn’t see us for fun too. I loved how perfectly Moonrise Kingdom captured the feel of the mid 60's...the attitudes, sentiments, attire and music of the time. I was 14 in '65 and never got to go to summer camp (although I really wanted to and knew a lot of kids that did, including my sister) and I found the camping scenes to be wonderful and hilarious. The general plot paralleled with my own life and various people I knew at that time, the writing was excellent as well as the cast but it's the soundtrack, in addition to everything I've already mentioned that makes it my FAVORITE Wes Anderson film!

It's simply not like anything being released today and that is compared to his other work. combining the classic French film making style and Wes's own filmmaking style will just turn people off for some time if they don't already know and love both of those styles and I think it will grow on people as long as they give it a second chance.

I would be surprised if that film doesn't go down as an ultime classic despite it not having had overwhelming success. The French dispatch will have a similar outcome. I agree, I loved it. But I also think it’s a line in the sand for a lot of people. It seems like impressions are far more polarized than most of Anderson’s previous films and many people who were on the fence about his style have finally check out, and they don’t care enough anymore to give it serious consideration. Which is fine, if it’s not your cup of tea then it’s not your cup of tea, but I think people are being too hard on it. I hope its reputation grows like Life Aquatic and Darjeeling Limited have, but I have a feeling it’s going to remain a “love it or hate it” movie.

I adore Rushmore. It may not be the peak of Wes Anderson's style, but I love the characters and the story so much. Same with the characters of Life Aquatic, Tenebaums, Darjeeling and even Fantastic Mr Fox. Theses characters are fully formed in their traits and emotions, and their sadness breaks your own heart. These early films tend to be my favorite since I agree that his recent works prefer style over character development.
Loved your video rankings and hearing your favorite Wes Anderson films. There is a comfort to watching them that I really enjoy.

The Royal Tenenbaums is one of my favorite movies of all time. Owen Wilson doesn’t get enough credit for how good of a screenwriter he is IMO. Don’t get me wrong, all of Wes Anderson’s movies have great scripts, but I think his first three are clearly some of if not the best ones in Anderson’s filmography and The Royal Tenenbaums is to me, unquestionably the best. It perfectly balances everything that makes Wes Anderson’s movies great. The aesthetic is beautiful but not overpowering the rest of the movie, the script is effectively dramatic (actually got me to cry the first time I saw it) while also being very funny, whereas most of his movies I think lean on the humor a little bit more. Some of the best wardrobe design I’ve ever seen in a movie, honestly rivals Pulp Fiction in that matter. One of my favorite soundtracks ever. Margot is one of my favorite movie characters ever. The movie just explores childhood and the feeling that your family is growing apart in such an honest, and beautifully melancholy way. It’s genuinely a near perfect movie in my opinion and I think it’s maybe one of the best movies in recent memory.

What a perfect take on Life Aquatic. When I tell people it’s my favorite movie they often a) don’t know what I’m talking about or b) say it’s one of Wes’s worst. I’m certainly biased as this movie came into my life at a crossroads between a lot of personal things going on and the strange tone flexing of sad to funny to somber just clicked with me. I’ve rewatched it multiple times and I can’t get enough of Seu Jorge’s covers (listenable on Spotify btw) or Bill Murray’s timeless performance. It’s by far not Wes’s best, but you said it best that it doesn’t deserve all the bashing it gets. “I wonder if it remembers me” will always stick with me. Great video once again :).

One day when I had Covid, I was laying in my room and booted up Disney+. I was scrolling through the movies and saw Fantastic Mr. Fox. Previously the only other stop-motion film I liked was Coraline, so when I started the movie I was watching it as a meme, expecting it to be really bad. But boy oh boy, I was so shocked by how much I liked it and rewatched it a few hours later. Since then I’ve seen the movie over a dozen times and I can safely say it’s my favorite film of all time. I’m so glad now that I got Covid that time because it introduced me to my new favorite director, who incidentally has the same first name as me. Normally I wouldnt be moved by this but I’ve only met one other Wesley ever, so this movie felt extra special.

I thoroughly enjoyed the childishness of The Life Aquatic. The part where Steve is showing us around his big, expensive yet cobbled-together boat like a child excited to show you their favourite toy is brimming with a sense of childlike wonder that I think has been integral to most of Anderson's films. Fantastic Mr. Fox, Isle of Dogs and the Darjeeling Limited especially tackle this kind of childishness, and it can be seen as a theme in the background in all of his work. The Life Aquatic captured that childishness perfectly in my opinion, and especially the juxtaposition of Steve Zissou being an old man acting childishly - lashing out at reporters, sulking when he hears people talking about him - and his estranged son Ned, the younger of the two, being far more mature than him.

The really cool thing about Wes Anderson is that he has such a consistent production value and style, artistic view, he makes such good movies that just make you feel warm. Even cooler is I feel like everyone has their own favorites of his. He plays off of such personable themes and dilemmas that he connects with someone, somewhere with at least one movie. Anyone can love his movies for any number of reasons, it’s truly special, especially in an age where indie film making suffers and all the attention goes to big budget blockbusters.

I'm confused, did some of the audio recorded for the Rushmore bit get mixed in with isle of dogs?
