Big Fan brothers I'm a DIYA my Dad was a Master Carpenter I used to be a apprentice when I was 16yrs I'm now 56yrs only wished I had Stuck to it now I struggle trying to fix floors walls etc. I'm a caregiver for Dad now he has severe Dementia I wish he could stop me and say you're doing it all wrong. Your video helps me and inspires me to do all the work myself even though I don't know what I'm doing thanks Scott and Paerau

I share the sentiment w.r.t. your Dad. Mine's not got dementia, but he is getting on now (76) and has been badly ill in the not too distant past, and his body and his eyes are letting him down. We're doing a barn conversion presently and today he's still helpful, but there are things where I'm just on my own and wish he could be of help/tell me I'm doing it all wrong. I only hope that we can get it finished before he can't help at all for one reason or another, and there's every chance that could happen sooner than I expect. All the best John.

I'm a Makita guy but the Bosch 12" is such a pleasure for the job site. Upfront bevel control, left/right handed handle and easy to load and unload on the gravity rise stand. For your van the Makita 10" would be perfect

I have had the 10" for a while now and it came straight out of the box doing "curved" cuts. Would of liked to see just how square the cuts were on this saw. After getting it set up and getting used to it, I love it. Cuts pretty sweet. But as you say, heavy to move around. The dust extraction is the best I have ever seen on any mitre saw... so long as it is hooked up right. The knob on the front DOES control the left bevel, you only need to push the button at the back to do right bevels else you wouldn't know when it was at 90°. All in all they are solid, powerful saws... just a bit cumbersome to move around.

You can flip the bevel over one side without pushing the button. When you lift it up it takes you to square. The button releases you to the other side

When I was running job sites, the crew universally rated my 12” Makita slide compound ( corded) superior to any DeWalt chop saw. It’s still going strong and accurate 25 years on.

    Tips.
Very important if you would like to saw with precision. (avoid torsion as much as possible)!
Always choose a Miter saw with a handle positioned in a vertical line above the saw blade.
Everything must be aligned, slide rails, handle, and saw blade,it is much better this way the blade will not tilt.
Because there is some torsion in the aluminum housing .
And choose an engine with softstart on it to prevent wear of the gear and worm shaft.
It is very important that everything is aligned.
Here are some examples to show how the handle must be positioned above the blade.
    Bosch gcm 800 sj / Bosch gcm 8 sjl / Evolution rage 3 / FESTOOL KS 60 / HITACHI C12RSH2 / FESTOOL KS 60 E KAPEX / Metabo KGSV 72 Xact
(This also is the case with the Miter saw without the slide rails).
If you want you can test it yourself at home if there is torsion in the aluminum housing.
Step-1. First you make a saw cut from +-5 mm deep in to a flat piece of wood about +- 20 mm thick to this with the normal handle positioned on the right side of the Miter saw (the wood it will remain in place until the test is completed).
Step-2. Then repeat this by pushing the saw blade down with your hand (finger) on the aluminum protective cover were the saw blade is cased in. Just now only do this without the running engine.
Step-3. Now you can see if the saw blade will be positioned in or next to the saw cut. If the saw blade is (+- 0,2 / 0,5 mm) next to the saw cut then there is torsion in the aluminum housing (test is completed).
Step-4. therefor it is much better to choose a Miter saw with the handle positioned vertical in line above the saw blade.
Conclusion: how further away the handle is from the saw blade how more chance of torsion in the aluminum housing.(don't go for that).

For my jobsite work, The 10" 36v Makita is great. Once I mounted it to a rolling stand, portability was good, and the reason I'l keep using it is cut quality. I do high end cabinets, trim, and millwork. I had a Flexvolt, and a Bosch Glide Miter but they both pale in comparison to the Makita's cut quality.

Agreed. I have the cordless 10 inch Makita version. Got it on sale with free 2nd set of 5 ah batteries.
And dual charger. For my non commercial use needs, it more than fills the bill. A bunch of different x36 tools were coming out here in the US 2 years ago with 2nd free set of 5ah Makita batteries. My run time with any given Makita 18 or 36 volt tool, is virtually unlimited now.

I used to think that too. I ran all DeWalt 20v. Then I realized Makitas 12v line had stuff I could only find there. So I run a good bit of that now too. Sitting here now I really wish I had seen Scott's videos on framing guns before I snapped up the DeWalt version. It sucks on old tember. So much so, I'm considering selling all the guns and buying into another platform. I'm coming around to the conclusion that sometimes performance trumps convenience.

    • @nsatoday

Vintagebleu, Milwaukee just launched their framing nailers and they purportedly beat all the cordless ones available. saw the demo recently and looked amazing. Milwaukee also has a deep 12v line and gen 2 and gen 3 18v are pretty badass. I’m in dewalts 20v and FlexVolt line and love it. Don’t use a framing nailer enough to justify switching though. Do love my 3/8” stubby impact and 1/4” impact in the M-12 platform. I don’t use my 20v 1/4 very often and if the stubby can’t handle it I’ve got the Dewalt 1/2” mid torque with toolconnect and the 899 high torque too. Dewalt just launched a bunch of 12v brushless but... too little to late IMHO.

I have been using the dewalt flexvolt miter saw for over a year now. I absolutely love it, Plus here in the states it has the ability to be plugged in and used as a regular corded saw if you desired. It also helps that I have been on the dewalt battery platform. Great video.

What do I look for in a mitre saw..?
Nothing because I have the Dewalt 12” flexvolt!! Can be corded or cordless, powerful, comfortable to operate and it cuts everything I put under the blade!
Only negative I’ve found so far is the xps light doesn’t stay on permanently.

Now that I am old(er), I have been loving my 7 1/4" miter saw, for portability. It will never be my only saw, but you can do ALOT with it. I won't get rid of my 12", but I will never buy another. There is too much deflection in that size of blade. It just doesn't do as good a job on trim as I would like.

I'm not sold on the battery powered mitre and table saws yet. Yes, smaller, portable saws for quick stuff would be nice but it looks like these are not more portable and the added expense for batteries doesn't help. I usually set them up and go to work, I'm not moving them around worrying about my cords getting caught on stuff. I still need power for charging the batteries. Circular saws and reciprocating saws were awesome when they were finally available at a good price and I'll never go back. But I don't think these will make me any more money or save me any time. Great vid, thanks for sharing!

Hi Scott, I too am a Makita man, but also run Milwaukee, I have a dewalt thicknesser and rip saw. Went for the dewalt rip saw because it is compact, the thicknesser because of its design and run Makita and Milwaukee because there are advantages and disadvantages in the tools they provide. I think its quite normal to have a mix of tools to suit your needs but to prefer a particular brand. Keep up the good work and love the videos by the way.

I have the 12" draw chop saw (corded) from DeWalt. I have to say, your comment about simplicity and weight was spot on. I find my DeWalt to be heavy and awkward enough and according to your figures, it is significantly lighter than the Makita. I love Makita tools though and am quite excited about their line of 36v yard equipment. I will likely get rid of my gas gear in the next couple years as the next generation of two of the Makita gear comes out.

A lot of the weight comes from the big table. I couldn't go back to dewalt now that I'm used to makitas. The clamp works nice for coping or cutting notches in skirt boards. The rails are great when you have to work in a hallway (commercial work). The fences clip onto the side support arms. How do you like makita blades? For the price they are amazing.

I bought the Dewalt 12inch Flexvolt on the weekend, awesome saw. it's lighter, smaller and more user friendly. Versatility to work on batteries or mains. I tried the 12inch Makita too and I actually think the design is better and feels more premium. $200 cheaper here in Sydney. I love how you can back it to the wall as the rails are at the front and the dust collection is superior, especially when paired with AWS, so it's really great for workshop/stationary applications. I do believe Makita needs to raise their battery capacities as they're falling behind. Love your videos Scott!

I have the corded version of this saw and its my favorite Miter saw I've owned or used, its very accurate and pleasant to use. I am a trim carpenter, so we cut a lot of large crown and base. I prefer to cut everything vertical/nested that I can, because for me, its more effecient. The Makita can manage most everything we do, I've even cut 7 1/4 speed base vertical with it (saws rated for 6 3/4"). The weight and size are a pain wish Makita would release a newer lighter version similar to the form factor of the 8 1/2" 40v . But i think for someone like me who hates cutting flat, I prefer to lug than having to reach around and mess with the bevel all day. I do like the up front bevel lock, but it would be nice if it could all be done from the front like the Bosch saws, instead of pushing the button in the back to go right. But, with its high cut capicty, its not often I need to use it. The Dewailt 12" is a great saw also and is about 8lbs lighter, but I prefer the Makita as it has much better dust collection, sets up in tighter spaces easier with the forward rails and goes 60* both ways.

I’m still pretty much committed to getting this one. I’ve only ever used Dewalt miters and have really never liked them. They never cut straight precisely for long at all. If I toil long enough to finally get a perfect 90.0 cut it will be off everywhere else, and after a few cuts the 90 degree will already be off too. Same thing for both Dewalts previously one of their 12” and more recently a 10”. It’s fine for home trimming and I have managed to get by on them but too much of what I do needs more precision.
I need to get a 12” again and this will be just the ticket. Luckily for me the size and weight won’t matter as it’s going to live in the garage. As such the necessity of cordless is far less pronounced but ultimately I think I still prefer it. Even if it’s in the garage full-time I’ll still likely be wheeling it to and fro between projects and always hate having to work around power cords and where outlets are. Also want the dust extraction integration that the AWS system provides.
Only thing I know I won’t like as much will be the laser as opposed to having a shadow line. Although come to think on it I could probably wire up my own anyway. In fact...yeah, of course I can what am I even worried about?
Also I have reservations about the aluminum detent plate. I expect the Makita to have better precision but what good does that do if the detents wear out rapidly? Allegedly there are aftermarket ones available but if they aren’t Makita how precise are they?

    • @wildtwindad
      @wildtwindad 5 років тому

Have the 10" version. Love it as such but the detents do take a hit. The replacement cost is 9$ where I am for a new plate. Just make sure that the saw u get is checked for the slide rails to be coplaner. I love the saw other wise and for tight spaces the front rail slide is awesome.

Long time Festool Capex user, thought I would give the Makita a try to see if battery would be the way to go. Overall it’s a pretty good saw.....for construction site, it’s big and heavy duty. My biggest gripe is the accuracy.....compared to the Capex, it’s very average. I still like it, but think the extra money for my work saw with the Festool is totally justified. In short a nice try, but some way still to go.

I put in a zero insert for stability on cutting very small wedges or Packers etc. Spent quite a while setting it up perfect, its quite tricky getting everything sliding and cutting bang on but once I did it is very accurate. A good blade is a must. The finish cut is like polished!!. But I was considering the kapex. How does it Excell in comparison to this saw??

I own the makita 12" saw. I have had it for a year or so. It makes great cuts smooth and precise. I bought it because I love makita tools and have lots of batteries. However I don't use this saw near as much as I expected. It's probably only been on 6 jobs in a year. Due to the struggle transporting space and weight. I tend to grab a smaller saw. Unless I have a job with lots of cuts and I plan to leave saw on site for at least a week.

I have the makita 7" sliding mitre saw but also have the Bosch 10" sliding mitre saw, yes its heavy to carry but once setup no problem and both very accurate, the reason for the bosch is the bevel markings are easier to see and was a good deal

Bought the 10" version but returned it. Sliding cuts were cupped - even on a short 6" cut. Makita's packaging is woefully inadequate and I think the rails may have been damaged in shipping. The other problem people have reported is wear (and subsequent sloppiness) on the miter stops on the base plate. There's a guy selling a steel version of the plate to replace the aluminum one that's supplied.

I run the dewalt flexvolt 12” miter saw every day. I absolutely love it. I also have the corded version of the Mikita you showed in this video. I use the Mikita in my shop due to it being able to go closer to the wall. I’m not a huge fan of the makita. It’s built well but i like the dewalt better.

Makita also make a little 8" (I think) battery-powered mitre saw as well. You're not going to be cutting sleepers with it but they look fine for studwork and trims.

cheers for the insight. think you really touch on the fact that the whole reason for having a cordless drop saw is it eliminates that feeling of not wanting to drag it out and running a lead and if the saw can't do that then whats the point.

I love the build quality of this saw, but it's way too heavy to be portable. And would take up way too much room in my van. I'd love to see them re-release their smaller saw the 8-1/2 (or a 7-1/4) but have it dual compound both L & R.

Like you I have makita cordless gear. And some corded like a planer, and router. But I went with dewalt for the 10in drop saw and table saw. Mostly because I like the roller stand on the table saw and the big stand for the drop saw. And the don’t like playing with the laser. The shadow line off the led light will always be accurate.
Good job Scott, love the content👍

I dont get why anyone needs a Cordless 12" drop saw.. drills, drivers, angle grinders.. yep.. But a 12" saw, you set up in a spot and dont move it for the most part, run one lead, and your done. Its more powerful and no changing batterys or reducing battery life. Im sure on the rare occasion it might be a luxury.. which brings me to another thing... The Metabo 36v set up has a Corded Battery... so you can run it with a cord... until you need to luxury of cordless.. I really think Makita need to bring out a corded battery for that saw.

I was pretty excited when Makita came out with the 10" saw, but when it didn't have the same gearing to angle the saw as the Festool KApex 120 I was disappointed. I too have a Dewalt 12" miter saw corded, but recently picked up an Elu 8-1/4" saw that I trimmed condos with 30 years ago for $20, it was like new and still had the original blade in it. The Elu is very light and portable and is all you really need for most trim jobs. I think a professional needs more than one saw. The big saws are not fun to lug around.

I Actually went from a 10" mitre saw to an 8" Makita mitre saw. Reason, 90% of cutting on a mitre saw does not require even an 8" cut. It is a rare calling to do crown moulding and if I did I still have the 10". The 8" is much lighter for day to day transportation in and out of the van and is very accurate.

Makita makes great tools! Amazing tools. But.... Bang for the buck?....well we love our "sexy flexy's!" Power, precision, portability, and function. And the ability to run on a.c. power as well! It is just crazy! And the shadow cast cut line is superior to any laser. We use them daily, and I am still amazed by them. We have a couple flexvolt sliders and the non slider, and it is so easy to pack around. I am still blown away by today's technology compared to when I started the trades. Or even 5 or so years ago. If you would have told me there would be large cordless tools... like miter saws and framing circ saws, and recip saws out performing corded tools, and 18 volt chainsaws that can cut down a large oak tree, I would have questioned your mental health. But here we are. And getting better and better each year. 👍
I'm very excited to see what else is in store for the future.
    Thanks for the video!

I'm a big fan of Dewalt when it comes to table saws and planers. But everything else I go for Makita. Had a 24 volt Makita. 7 1/4 inch slide. But it needed a hard to get battery that cost more than a Craftsman corded saw similar to the Makita. Some of these saws need a way to make them corded.

I am a huge Makita fan too but for miter saws, Dewalt is hard to beat. Since it is the only Dewalt product I own, I have the corded 12” version. My miter saw must be easily portable so the extra weight on the Makita is a nonstarter. BTW, love the channel.

  • @practicalmaker83

When i was oscillating between the Dewalt and Makita corded version, the decision was based on the detent plate, the indented plate(on Makita was soft metal, on Dewalt was steel) and the light guide, Makita has the laser, which you have to align, realign and you never trust it 100%. The Dewalt has the backlight and the shadow of the blade is your reference. That will be always right, without any aligments. for sure they patented it, so nobody else can use it. I am btw Makita user, the only tool from dewalt i have is the dropsaw.

I have Milwaukee for handheld tools and still use DEWALT for corded larger tools. My DEWALT miter saw is a 12" beast from years passed and still goes and goes. It is heavy but does most what I need it to do and does it well... no need to change it yet. To this day I find DEWALT to be the bench mark on the larger tools. The 12" Makita would probably be interesting if it were on rolling stand but, like you said, it is a beast and heavy, so I would pass because it is probably as heavy or heavier then the corded DEWALT model I currently have!

  • @thomasDLC

I've owned the 10" version for a year and a half now. It's pretty good but some issues. The base plate will get clogged after a while which makes it really hard to swivel after a while. I usually clean it out with wd40 every month or so. The detents have worn out slightly so won't sit exactly at 90° unless you fine tune it yourself. It's bloody heavy but good cut capacity and power

The yellow one is stronger, lighter and has a better way to set the blade position: using a shadow/light system which is much more precise and convenient. On the other hand, the teal one has a much more clever 18v battery system, smaller footprint, smoother cut, better dust collection... plus I guess the 10" version you can adjust the front bevel adjuster. That's why I think I'll go for Makita, but not totally sure about it.

This saw is actually lighter than my 15 inch Hitachi beast. It is only a single miter but can cut through a 6x6 quick! The Makita looked interesting to me since I am already in the line of tools but way too expensive for me at this point, I will stick to my variety of corded saws for miter and table saw and my cordless circ and track saws if the others won't cut it or are too far from a cord.

I‘ve had this saw about 3 months. Agree 100% about the weight, but that‘s not so important for me as I work in the shop, not on site. The only serious criticism I have is that when cutting either side of the vertical, eg with 10° tilt, the saw no longer crosscuts at 90°. I have to fiddle with the table to get it to crosscut at 90°. Have you noticed this? It must have something to do with the geometry of the saw.

I like that rail forward design of that. Table does look a bit over-built and they could maybe save some weight there. My 12" Bosch (from about 2008) has super long, traditional rails and they get a bit stiff. I like how close you were able to place it to the wall. About the fence: I think they make that fence just come off because people never slide them out far enough and next thing you know, you are nipping off a corner of aluminum. (buddy did that to mine in the first week of ownership...haha)

Scott, thank you for the exciting review of the Makita 12" cordless miter saw. Funny story, yesterday one of the USA retailers had a flash sale on the 10" Makita cordless, so I impulsed ordered one. LOL, sounds like I may like it. Dewalt is not an option for me even though I have been using the 12" Dewalt corded saw, I have too much invested in Makita batteries.
