- Let's talk about aircraft instrument panel design. With the help of Steve at Aircraft Specialty, we've designed a really nice panel. Check out the clear acrylic templates I used to verify placement and fit of the instruments and switches. If you are looking for help creating a professional looking panel, check out www.asflightlines.com

The old adage, "Measure twice, cut once" rings loud and clear here. What a great idea from Aircraft Specialty
Totally Awesome 100% perfection
Very helpful video. I've got my panel scratched out on brown paper taped to a work table. I need to tune it up and send it to Steve. After he quits laughing, perhaps he can work up a template for me, too! Keep up the good work!
Really cool concept to figure out the issues before the final assembly!
All eye candy!!! Xmas all over again! Very cool.
Super cool man!
Great video man. And thanks for adding Stinson stickers!!
Nice video. You gave me the enthusiasm to start with my IPC Savannah build project. Greetings from Southern Switzerland.
I can’t wait till I’m at a point in my life I can get into building experimentals. Currently a student so I have a bit of work before I get there haha
Listening while building my Cruzer
Great stuff Mark (two thumbs up)
Thank you for taking the time to share.
I'm thinking those bottom switches might go well above the screens instead of below and might be better as "press to action & press to release" as opposed to lever type operation.
Also what if the whole panel was on slides ? ...
just ideas for someone else's build.
Thanks for sharing this. I have been going back and forth on doing my own panel and going with Aircraft Specialties. I need to get back to Steve. I have been really busy with work. I will make a point to call him next week. Very Cool....
It's a no brainer for me! I've cut out my own panels on my other airplanes using a hand nibbler and it's a long sucky job! Seeing how perfectly this new panel from Steve is cut out is simply amazing. It saves me a ton of time and certainly is more accurate than I could do myself. This will make completing the panel way faster and easier, and it will definitely look better since the labels will be silk screened on!
@@KitplaneEnthusiast Totally agree. I have emailed him and I just need to return his call. Work has been busy this week. I will call him next week when things slow down.
Hmmm . . . Now, I'm imagining silk screening the acrylic panel with a white base layer and a black top layer with all the switch / component labels. Edge light it and, VOILA, a military/airliner type of instrument panel. That's what I want!
You'll have to check out my next update video on my neighbors Velocity. That's sort of what he did on his panel. It looks pretty cool!
Mark, which engine/prop combo are you going to install?
Love this series. Question: Did you consider locating the Mixture on the left next to the Throttle? Seems natural to have the engine controls grouped together on the left as you hold your stick on the right, plus you solve the center panel swivel out interference.
I'll explain more about the panel in Ep40-should be up in a day or so...
Did you consider putting the trim control on the grip and then putting the indicator near the throttle? Of course you could also use the Dynon for the trim and or flap indicator and leave the other one's off the panel all together. My grips have both Flaps and trim on them and my only indicators are on the HDX screens...
Nope. I have it configured just how I like!
Hey Mark! Really useful info , sure beats the trial and error method. Is there not enough room to mount the mixture control on the left next to the throttle? I'm sure that you already considered that , I'm used to having them next to one another. Thanks for sharing and Blue Skies!
No-I wanted to mount the flap switch and trim switches next to the throttle. I also wanted to use my right hand for the mixture so my preference was to place it in the middle.
@@KitplaneEnthusiast makes sense! Your pretty much using up all of the real estate available! Thanks for the reply!
Cool video -- and panel! Question: did you do anything with regards to the flexing you saw, around the throttle in the Cruiser? Or is this panel different, in some regard? Thanks
The flexing won’t be an issue on this panel because the new panel will be .060 which is much thicker than the original panel.
@@KitplaneEnthusiast Makes sense. I guess it would be a bit hard to add something like a doubler behind (in front, as the plane sits) the panel in the Cruizer, to stiffen it up after the fact??
Hi Mark, a quick question: when you showed the missed "switch indicator", you said it was for trim switch. I though that in your earlier video, you want to have a flap switch indicator. I might have heard it wrong, but just want to make sure what that indicator for which switch. Thank you for the excellent videos. I have not missed any one of them!
The flap position will be displayed in the Dynon. Note that the Dynon can also display the trim position too but I liked the LED light provided by Ray Allen with the trim switch so I wanted to use their indicator.
Wow those plastic templates are an awesome way to see your panel before it’s built. Are the templates reasonably priced?
Give Steve a call at Aircraft Specialty. I know the prices vary based on a lot of things so he can give you a price depending on what you want done!
Mark, is there any reason you cant or don't want the throttle and Mixture both on the LEFT side? What is your reason for the Mixture in the center since the plane has a center control stick??
I'll explain more in Ep40.
Can you share what the total cost of your IFR setup, including autopilot, was. What was the cost of your VFR setup in the cruiser?
I really don’t know. But you can go to the Dynon website and select the panel and components you want and it adds up a total for you. The only thing they don’t have is an IFR GPS so I bought a Garmin. I think that was around $5,000.
Why don't you use the hand grips from the guys with the trim switch and use the top piece with trim switches on it??
That is an option, but it's just not the route I wanted to go. I like the set up I have. I'll explain more in Ep40.
What engine are you thinking of for this airplane?
Planning on the 180hp Lycoming Thunderbolt!
Greetings - long time viewer - first time comment. I'm local to East MI area, if you have interest in my support of laser etching the ID on panel - hit me up. Some detailsare available in a recent post on my channel showcasing the laser etch process, results are real impressive. Just ask Rex at Ray - he's seen it!
Is your dash the Super Duty dash or the Cruzer dash, which one is wider?
The SD has the smaller STOL panel and my Cruzer has the larger panel.
@@KitplaneEnthusiast So will the larger Cruzer dash fit in the SD?
@@dcrahn Yes. When you order your kit you can choose which panel you want. Note that the glare shield piece is different also based on the panel you choose.
I guess you are not installing a full FADEC engine since you are planning on a mixture...
True.
How much did it cost you to get that acrylic cut out?
I don't know if you have kids, but if you want to adopt a 42 year old, let me know, man.
