Really funny that Jacob Elordi, an australien is playing an englishman, Irish Barry Keoghan is also playing in englishman and Archie Madekwe, an englishman is playing an american. I think Actors from UK, Ireland and Australian are very good learning various accents
Barry Keoghan has a Liverpool accent in this film, which is very good (think John Lennon). "Where is Liverpool?" "Uhhh... North." The movie theatre laughed alongside me. :)
@FelixCattonSoup my bad, it doesnt mean truth, it means "lucky", as he is rich and good-looking. but oliver... as in oliver TWIST (which we all saw coming)

Just walked out of seeing Saltburn in the theater. I think it was brilliant and affecting. I was riveted by the last hour. Can’t wait to see what Fennell does next!
SPOILERS SPOILERS I think that all the people who are saying they couldn’t find Felix’s motivation, or that it was changing, don’t remember Venetia’s judgement of him. He’s a moth. His greed for “shiny” things ends up consuming whatever he desires. So at first, he desired Felix, and wanted to be close to him and his aura. Then he goes to saltburn and desires the aura of saltburn. Once he knows that he can’t have Felix in the way he wants anymore, he gets rid of him. And once his status at saltburn becomes threatened, he starts to pick off the people who could ruin it for him. His avarice is what drives him to manipulate his way into whatever he desires.
Basically this. He is highly intelligent psychopath, whose desires are many and all. He played a long game and I do believe the actual money is the least of his motivation (but not excluded)
Dan, I love that you look like you're crouched down in a child's chair. Great effect. 😉 Regarding the movie, thanks so much for the review! Your insight is always appreciated.
I just saw Emerald Fennell's latest movie, "Saltburn," and wow, it's an absolute knockout! A modern Great Gatsby! This film's visual richness & script brilliantly satirizes Oxford/British wealth and extravagance while uncovering the depths of its characters in a way that's just captivating. It's like watching a train wreck you can't turn away from, with each scene revealing more about what's really going on. The acting is across the board truly top-notch - absolutely one of the best ensemble performances I've seen this year. Rosamund Pike is phenomenal, and Alison Oliver shines bright. Carey Mulligan's cameo? Simply unforgettable. And Barry Keoghan? He's outdone himself, delivering a performance that's bound to get Oscar buzz. What really struck me was how the film takes themes that might seem repulsive on the surface and turns them into a mesmerizing display of artistry. The aesthetics, acting, and writing all come together perfectly, making even the most grotesque scenes somehow relatable. That bathtub scene? It had me feeling a mix of emotions I still can't quite explain. The tone of the movie is dark but compelling, with every cast member bringing their A-game. And the score? Absolutely majestic. Fennell has outdone herself with this one. After this and "Promising Young Woman," I'm convinced I'll watch anything she directs. I'm also betting on Oscar nominations for Production Design and Costume Design. And a special shoutout for including "Murder on the Dancefloor" in the soundtrack - that song was my jam in elementary school! The movie is a rollercoaster of emotions - it's funny, dark, twisted, and utterly captivating. I found myself laughing, gasping, and even shrieking alongside everyone else in the theater. Fennell's unique and inventive approach really shines, making "Saltburn" a film that begs for multiple viewings. As a movie lover, I left the cinema completely amazed and satisfied. For anyone who loves cinema, this is a must-watch. Emerald Fennell has really cooked up something special with "Saltburn."

@@becm1395There's a reason why people say there are no original stories under the sun or something ti that effect. I completely agree with your review, couldn't have said it better really. Its a bit unfocused but extremely aesthetically beautiful, making it all the more watchable.
I’d say Saltburn was far superior to Promising Young Woman. I also preferred it to Anatomy of a Fall, and think it should have been nominated over that film.
I think something that's skipped over in your analysis of the movie is that the psychosexual desire does link back into the themes of class. Within the UK middle class there is this palpable desire, almost sexual in nature, to be upper class. In fact when it was revealed that he was not working class as present but in fact was middle class things click thematically as an excellent reveal that as someone from the UK made a lot of sense (think of the valorisation of the royals for external reference).
Well said. But the family also seems to have an innate attraction to the 'poor unfortunate boy' routine. What do you think that was about? Did they actually want to help him or use him for something specific?
I loved this film! And I enjoyed your thoughtful review - the only point I disagree with you on is that I liked Saltburn more than Promising Young Woman.
Wow, you're getting around. I'm so pleased you got to the Roxy. It's a favourite of mine when I lived in Wellington and knowing how you love local theatres I wanted to recommend it. However my childhood was spent in the Civic in Auckland. The sky ceiling still fascinates me.

I’m really frustrated with this film because it had so much potential. However, the very predictable ending makes a lot of the film cheap and hollow. Although I ultimately wasn’t a fan of the film I do think the mood, style, and character work is really good. Just wish the director had a stronger vision for the ending.
Hi Dan I totally agree about your Review of Saltburn. It was all too much at the same time. I have watched a few Reviews of this movie and I believe yours is spot on. It is a totally fascinating movie but I believe it is not as good as Promising Young Woman which was a very focused movie. Saltburn certainly needs unpacking. Saltburn does seem to have too many stories at the same time so it is hard to focus on the main or real story which takes away your enjoyment of the movie. Everyone is so superficial. I definitely think this movie is rushed and definitely needs a second viewing. This movie has a really creepy feel with some very off cringy scenes. It is very stylish just like Promising Young Woman. Great Review thank you.
Hey Dan, I'm wondering if you would consider doing a video that explains the process of moviemaking from start to finish? I've looked for such an explanation in books or UA-cam videos, and I've never been able to find something explains it for a layperson. I would love to know more about how all the people listed in the credits play a role in creating the final product that people see on their screens.

Very intriguing, Phil, lots and lots of clever stuff here and I love your Breakdown. Don’t think you’ve missed anything being sensitive so I found some of the scenes a bit difficult to watch but the way the characters were formed and fitted in to the bigger picture was masterful
I loved this movie. It reminded me of "Cousin Bette". Being in the UK this resonates with me. The class system is definitely very much alive, and well. The attraction of bringing an outsider into the family circle for amusement/shock value (to be disposed of when no longer fun - like Pamela). The obsession of accessing to the rarified atmosphere of the upper class. Its all there in this movie.

Personally, love the Roxy's character, but admire the Embassy's history, having hosted so many premieres of wonderful movies. Glad you are getting a chance to visit both!
Love that you visited State Cinema. I've been going there since I was a little kid. I live in Wellington now which definitely has better cinemas, but I'll always have a love of my hometown cinema
Feel free to pace yourself as much as you like on your own honeymoon... that includes taking a few hours off from the honeymoon itself. You do you. You two have a lovely time.
Lived in Nelson my entire life. Yay for State Cinema! I remember sitting in front of there from 5am on the day tickets for LOTR Return of the King went on sale. And the excitement among those of us waiting when the film reels were delivered was thrilling.
Dan if you're in Christchurch, you have to go to SILKY OTTER! It is the best movie going experience! Make sure you get one of their signature cokes too
I Iove seeing movies at the cinema, so much that the last few years I've been seeing 52 movies at the cinema a year. As a little tradition for myself. I travelled to another city, and said to a friend I wanted to see a movie at some of the cinemas while I was there. They said I could see a movie anywhere. I mentioned you can do most things anywhere and going to the cinema, seeing the different locations, architecture and designs is as much as of a joy, as seeing the movie. So it's so cool to me that you are enjoying the cinema still while you're abroad ❤
Enjoy your time in Christchurch it is a lovely city despite the quakes a decade ago but I live here and I do love it here. If you get a chance go to Sweet Soul patisserie it had some lovely stuff to eat.
I wasn't at all surprised by what Oliver was doing, as I very early on got the impression that this was kind of like The Talented Mr. Ripley, but I enjoyed it and thought it was really good.
I am going to see this, just so I can know what it is actually about. I have seen a trailer for this at just about every movie I have gone to review, and the trailers are so vague, that it has grabbed my curiosity.
Dan could you remind me about which degrees in film studies you have and from which universities you obtained them to allow you to critique films credibly?
I have a Film and Media Production degree from Florida State University. I grew up studying film and film criticism on my own, including reading thousands of reviews as well as countless books about film and film history and I've devoted my life to the study of film, to sharing my love for it, and to trying to promote it as an art form. I've worked directly in the entertainment industry for almost 20 years in several capacities including editing, writing, and producing, for which I've been nominated for four Emmy awards. As for my credibility, I critique films to the best of my ability and I leave decisions on my credibility to the viewer. I'd also like to note that degrees and academia don't qualify someone automatically to be a film critic. Understanding and appreciating film and being able to effectively express your thoughts in a clear, concise, and intellectually honest way are the only real qualifications I care about. To quote one of my favorite 21st century films, did I adequately answer your condescending question?
Personally, I enjoyed Promising Young Woman but the ending made me sick. But, I was fully behind Saltburn for some reason 😅 best ending to any film ever 😂
I just saw this. I was surprised it was playing in my small WV town. My experience was ruined by two rude women. It was suspenseful and fun. Dark and fun.
if you like this movie i think you’re in too deep into trying to be artsy. Good movies are thought provoking through clarity and conciseness. What was even the climax of the movie? The reveal that he killed much of the family? That wasn’t unobvious from long before that scene
I always wonder while watching your review videos, “I wonder if Mara liked this movie.” I cannot wait to see this movie this weekend. Thank you for the review.
Completely agree and for all the same reasons. Compelling movie that ultimately comes across as shallow only because it bit off more than it could chew.
This sounds intriguing. Expectations can be terribly unfair. BTW, it’s your honeymoon, if you both want to watch a movie and feel like doing a review that’s your choice! Especially when you’re a reviewer BECAUSE you love watching and thinking critically about movies.
Really liked this movie. I think I benefit from not having watched Promising Young Woman and not knowing what to expect. Agree that it’s more a style over substance movie, but the style is terrific
Had to stop watching because, while you weren't outright spoiling anything, I thought you were giving too much away. The trailers reveal so little about the movie and maybe that's a good thing.
Good point on Saltburn potentially being a disappointment because of the success of her debut with Promising Young Woman but I will say that I didn’t know how directs it going I. And I thought it was more than likely directed by a newcomer but still very good and I kinda felt the same way about Promising Young Woman which I don’t think is an insult. I like her films even if they both felt like a little tidying and more trusting of the audience would have pushed them over the line. I’m happy to watch entertaining eye candy slightly pushing boundary films any day though.
Agreed, I feel like people are too harsh on a second feature length film. Things kinda fell apart in the third act but I immensely enjoyed the whole experience
“Plays like a character study but resolves like a mystery” is a FANTASTIC description for this movie, and 100% nails why it didn’t land with me as much as I thought it would as it was going along.
Zero character depth, zero character development and zero believability to any of the scenes

So it's so cool to me that you are enjoying the cinema still while you're abroad ❤
I feel like the only person in the world that really disliked Promising Young Women. I was very disappointed with it.
You’re in New Zealand?! Have I missed you in Wellington already? The Roxy is my favourite cinema ❤️
if you're still in christchurch Dan, try Smash Palace for their "kiwi burger" bc it's AMAZINGGG
I absolutely loved this movie. Enjoyed your review. Hope you are still having an awesome honeymoon.
Enjoy your time in Christchurch it is a lovely city despite the quakes a decade ago but I live here and I do love it here. If you get a chance go to Sweet Soul patisserie it had some lovely stuff to eat.
Do you know if this movie has audio description for blind people?
Your reviews are always the best.
It just hit me how close Dan and Mara are where I am. Still a country away, but closer compared to being in the States.😊
Nelson is the place where Ada ends up in The Piano (1993) cool!! Have a great time... I'm really exited for Saltburn
I wasn't at all surprised by what Oliver was doing, as I very early on got the impression that this was kind of like The Talented Mr. Ripley, but I enjoyed it and thought it was really good.
The Roxy is beautiful, Peter Jackson did a great job of restoring it. Did you go to Weta when you were out in Miramar?
You write off that honeymoon! You write it the heck off!!! (Glad you two are having a good time )
Where can I watch that movie?
If the Oscar’s adds a Best Dance Number in a Drama/comedy, Saltburn is a complete lock.
9:15 What was compelling about the story?
Personally, I enjoyed Promising Young Woman but the ending made me sick. But, I was fully behind Saltburn for some reason 😅 best ending to any film ever 😂
You just like cocks and bushes 😂
(Kidding, the ending is very satiricaly bold and mesmerizing. The song choice helps a lot)
I always wonder while watching your review videos, “I wonder if Mara liked this movie.”
I cannot wait to see this movie this weekend. Thank you for the review.
Oh shoot dan's in nz and was in wellington? Damn dude, if ur back in welly by any chance would love to see ya irl🥰
Completely agree and for all the same reasons. Compelling movie that ultimately comes across as shallow only because it bit off more than it could chew.
Thank u Dan. Big kisses to you and your wife
This sounds intriguing. Expectations can be terribly unfair. BTW, it’s your honeymoon, if you both want to watch a movie and feel like doing a review that’s your choice! Especially when you’re a reviewer BECAUSE you love watching and thinking critically about movies.
Better than promising young woman
Really liked this movie. I think I benefit from not having watched Promising Young Woman and not knowing what to expect. Agree that it’s more a style over substance movie, but the style is terrific
Reminded me of Barry Lyndon without the pathos and with gross out scenes
Had to stop watching because, while you weren't outright spoiling anything, I thought you were giving too much away. The trailers reveal so little about the movie and maybe that's a good thing.
Smart
Thanks Dan
Good point on Saltburn potentially being a disappointment because of the success of her debut with Promising Young Woman but I will say that I didn’t know how directs it going I. And I thought it was more than likely directed by a newcomer but still very good and I kinda felt the same way about Promising Young Woman which I don’t think is an insult. I like her films even if they both felt like a little tidying and more trusting of the audience would have pushed them over the line. I’m happy to watch entertaining eye candy slightly pushing boundary films any day though.
Have you seen The Holdovers?
Ken Russell's take of Brideshead Revisited?
love your videos man, i am a big fan.
This movie had me intrigued as soon as I saw the trailer. I'm looking forward to checking this out.
I realized on recently that I loved this movie so much because it’s very Kubrickian
Agreed, I feel like people are too harsh on a second feature length film. Things kinda fell apart in the third act but I immensely enjoyed the whole experience
