Paul said something to the effect of being everything to everyone so as to win some to Christ. So understanding someone's life and beliefs is very helpful in presenting the gospel in a way that would most likely be understood.
This was very helpful in understanding eastern beliefs/mysticism, and exactly what is Gnosticism.
