Burt, did you ever think about writing an article for AAW, that would be great, it's would be helpful alone with the video.

That's an interesting idea. I have so much on my plate right now that I don't dare take on another project. Though, maybe sometime down the road. Don't forget about the downloadable written version of the video. It's 16 pages and includes pictures of the different textures as well as a table of contents. The link is with the thumbnail.
      Have fun!

Thank you very much for your kind words. This took way longer than I could have imagined. And I see that I have a problem with the run times to locate the chapters. I will try to fix it, but if it is going to take a long time, I will just live with it. Thanks to my son, who is home for Thanksgiving, I was able to get this video on youtube because I'am not very tech savy. I glad you find it helpful. I can't imagine too many people will really be interested. After all it is quite specialized and most people will give up before mastering the patterns. I have tried to get others interested, but they have found it difficult and haven't wanted to put in the time. My main goal was to document the patterns for myself, so that when I forget how to do it, I can refresh my memory. I also knew it would force me to think clearly about what I was doing which would organize and simplify it in my mind so I would have a deeper understanding. And it did that. Thanks again, Burt

Holy smokes! Yes, I agree, this is the most detailed spiraling video I’ve seen. I’ve been thinking about making this for my channel but you saved me a ton of time. I wouldn’t have gotten into this much detail, but I sure appreciate the amount of time and effort, and expertise and editing that you did. You are my kind of guy. If we lived close to each other we’d be making tops often. Keep up the good work🗜

Thank you for your comments. What other patterns can you do? I always want to learn more. I started this video before COVID. I got half way done. My computer froze and lost it all. I got half way again and the computer died and lost that. My son got me a better computer a year or so ago and I finally finished it this last Summer, But I couldn't figure out how to put a link to my written instructions. My son is home for Thanksgiving and thankfully made a link and uploaded it on UA-cam just a few hours ago. This video seemed to take forever. But I have to admit that I spent a lot of time experimenting with new patterns, only one of them panned out.

I did a How to make tops”video last month on my Bob’s woodshop channel. I don’t think I have anything in there that you haven’t done in yours other than concentrate more on the entire process. Again, well done. Our club makes the tops for donations to the Childrens specialized hospital of New Jersey. Why do you make your tops?

@@BobAmarant Nice video! I also use black to separate colors. I liked your burnishing the tip of the top. I'm going to steal that one from you as well as using a stick to burnish other parts. Burnishing with a darker colored wood could also add some color. Good ideas! Thanks, Burt

Wow what a great video, it must have taken you a lot of time. It’s a great reference when trying to remember how to do different patterns.
Thank you for making. I love your work too.
Can I ask do you use sharpy marker pens to colour your pieces permanently or just for the demonstration?
I have the hope tools and a couple of Sorby ones so hopefully some of the techniques translate over to the hope ones.
    Thanks again.

      Simon,
As in my video, I just turn, color, wax, texture, sometimes color some more, turn some more, wax some more, and that is it. The fine sharpie markers seem to hold their color over time, but then they are not stored exposed to light.
I'm glad you find the video helpful. The best of luck. Stay safe and have fun.

Thank you so much for this! I own the large version and each attempt to make a decoration is like taking a gamble.
The techniques shown here will be a great help and inspiration. 😎
Regarding the issue with the wheel not staying in the same groove on each rotation. I have that problem too and it greatly affects my results. The solution is to apply some practical math. You can make a repeating cut by cutting on a diameter where the circumference of the circle on the wood is a multiple of the distance between the teeth of the cutting wheel. The problem is how to quickly measure this accurately. This is easier said than done; the most practical approach is probably to make a superficial cut, check the result and adjust accordingly. Still working on implementing that without damage to the workpiece.
But again, thanks a lot for sharing this. Subcribed to you as well.
    /Leo

The problem is only an occasional one and I usually just live with it. If it is an important piece, such as on a bowl, I cut it off and try again adjusting the diameter of the pattern just slightly. And that usually works. Thanks for the comments and I'm glad you found the video useful.

Now that I'm doing these small tops, I had wished you showed us how to texture the top of the spinning disc. I guess we use a chatter tool for that. Any tips you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

      @burthovander4873  Рік тому

No problem. Watch my video "Woodturning Tops: turn, color, wax and texture a top in real time". To do the other side of the top with the Sorby tools is a bit more difficult and a little restrictive, but the results are almost as good as the other side. I usually do the exact same design on both sides, but sometimes I do vary it a bit. I suggest you leave a minimum of 5/8" of wood on the back side while texturing and then reduce the diameter and form the handle. Give it a go. You will figure it out. Good luck, have fun and stay safe.

What a joy to stumble across your tutorial on all this spiraling, texturing business.
I enjoyed every minute and will be referring back to it very often.
I invested in a crown micro system a while ago with varying results.
I later realized that their are no bearings on those wheels unlike the sorby system which in now on my shopping list.
I intend to carry on fortified with the knowledge and time that you have put into this.
Thank you - You have made an old man wiser and a little happy.

Thank you for your kind words and encouragement. FVI the Sorby micro spiraling and texturing tools don't have a bearing, but the larger version does. I did buy the large version , however, I definitely prefer the micro set. The large one has to remove too much wood to make a nice texture and can really tear up the wood if you aren't careful, but that may be the texture some people want. For the micro set I purchased the wheels and made the rest of the tools. In my latest version I did include a bearing, but I don't see it as any better than the bearingless version I first made. They both need to be cleaned every so often. Only time will tell if the bearing really helps.
I'm so glad you find the video helpful.
The best of turning to you.
