I think they are very attractive medallions. I like colour with texturing but I agree with you that walnut is a beautiful wood and colour would only spoil it.

Love your videos Erik! I purchased the tool in January and I'm finally getting some time to start playing with it. Now all I have to do is figure out the angles of attack to get those designs you come up with. And yes, better to practice on something like that than ruining a bowl... Thanks for inspiring my curiosity.
Terry thank you, you will have fun, just get a good piece of maple or walnut and do some end grain practice, like these medallions.

Man, that is fantastic, I've been fascinated with texturing tools, and since I can't afford any, finding out how they work in hope I could replicate a home made version of them someday. It's perfect to see some close up work with these, just makes me want to stop feeding the kids so I could get one ;)

Hairy oak is unfortunately, very fractious. Good luck my friend. Do you have any mulga? If not I can send you some. It is good colour, very hard and very stable. Regards to all in your house.
Thanks Les, what is Mulga I am going to look it up but I have ideas for how to keep the hairy oak together and I will see if it works., thin CA glue bath slow cure or shellac and denatured bath 50/50 several times and let set then drill for tubes. I would love some Mulga but let me try to get a Hairy Oak Pen out!
Mulga looks amazing , I have made some California Acacia burl pens that turned out beautifully.
Mulga is a western wood. Sometimes called gidgee. It is very small tree. It only grows to about four inches across. I may have sent you some in the past. Your ideas for the hairy sound very good.

Erik I just watched a video by Nick Agar from Sorby's instead of sandpaper he just burnishes it with shavings I'm going to try both today in my workshop all the best for the coming year from Downunder
