Wow, I lived in NJ in 1986 and knew nothing about this. Most likely because I wasn't a railfan at the time and wouldn't have known anyway from the usual railfan sources. Too bad, it looks like it was a fund trip! Ten years later and things were different, I DID make a C&O 614 trip! What a ride!
@ToonLink682 - The second tender is an auxiliary tender, made to increase her water capacity over long distances. More water means less time to stop and fill them up again.
I honestly can say that the 425 look a lot better when the headlight was mounted above the Smoke Box I think the idea was to make it look like a Pennsylvania Railroad engine it also sounds great with that Pennsylvania Railroad 3 chime
I remember when 425 was on the Morristown and Boonton lines and when he came through Dover. It was shortly after the new electrics had been put into service. The old MUs Andy Mueller bought were nicely painted and looked like new. I like 425 in black, too. I don't think BM&R had 2102 yet.
C&O 614 USED TO RUN BEETWEEN HOBOKEN AND PORT JERVIS ON NJ TRANSIT FROM 1996 TO 1998 WHEN HE WAS RETIRED IN 1999 BUT THERE IS A CHANCE THAT HE CAN BE RESTORED I THINK 425 MIGHT COME BACK TO NJ TRANSIT AGAIN IN THE FUTURE ALONG SIDE C&O 614 SOON...
How did these trips happen? Didn't 2102 also run to Port Jervis as well? Wasn't 1986 the year there were no off-line excursions on Conrail with BM&R because there was an insurance crisis and Conrail wanted over $1 million in liability insurance? But this trip ran because it was run with NJ Transit, and they could ferry the train over Conrail from Temple to Hoboken because there were no passengers on board. I wonder if there's hope for steam again on this line and other lines in NJ, NY and eastern PA? Maybe the NKP 765 with NS? 765 ran this line in 1988 as well, and went to Temple, PA with public excursions. C&O 614 is stuffed and mounted in WV, CSX wouldn't let Ross Rowland use it on their tracks with his Greenbrier Express. So, 3 ex-NS diesels were going to be used instead, then it was going to be tacked at the end of an Amtrak train and dropped off at the resort. But the R&N, and NS are steam and passenger excursion friendly. 614 would have worked out on either of those railroads.
@@amtrak_121 Honestly, what i'd like to see is for the Strasburg to relocate #90's headlight to the center of the smokebox & bell relocated to the top of the smokebox. so that way it looks just like how 425 looks currently. But I'd also love to see #90 return to Jim Thorpe & do some doubleheader trips with 425.
No he means that CSX has banned all steam live or not from their rails. That happened in 1995 or so. But NS has welcomed some steam back to their rails. However, the 425 is all friction bearing, plus most of the coaches, so would not be suitable anymore to run on class 1 railroads.
Yep she will be back this summer or fall. But definitely this year. Who knows if she will be back in black or blue... I'm hopeing black! But it's all up to Mr. Muller.
No diesel helper? Well, then, when it was crossing the tall bridge, what were those two red things behind the tool car? 2 DIESELS! They looked like Morristown & Erie units.
I wish I saw this train and engine in 1986 at the age of 12.

Wow, something that would be awesome if it could happen again, but never will.. Great footage and thank you for sharing.
No matter where it is or how it looks, 425 always puts on a great show. Thanks for putting this up
I grew up watching this video on RFTv. Sadly the channel doesn’t exist anymore in Florida. I’m trying to get the dvd of this video.
There she is, the Glory of all
425 should be a star in a movie!
It was the cause of power cutting when it hit an SUV in 2017
Kinda like how the NKP 587 got its own movie

I LOVE THIS TRAIN!!!!

I think she looks good as she is at the moment.
Sounds like a LIRR G5
She could have the high mounted bulb again after her inspection
@@USSCFan148 Or How about in 2028 because in 2028 425 will have 100 years old
Amen to that and we're grateful to still have her around

Great video. Great locations. I can smell the cinders.
This is 425: Raised headlight and this awesome whistle.
I love this whistle on her! While I love the headlamp where it is currently (a'la Reading), this whistle is best!
I rode that trip expecting the 765 …
All I remember is a lot of rain at Port Jervis..🙁
425 is one of my favorite Pacifics and stablemate of veteran star 2102
Great shots! Cool to see her in black!
That's a sweet sounding 3-chime, but the Reading 6-chime is unbeatable
first time I saw this train: Lots & Lots of Trains

These were all specials (425, 765, 614, 2102) Were all seen on the trips
Didn’t any of those coaches get scrapped decades later or are they all rostered by reading northern
awesome. simply awesome.
Guys this was uploaded in 2009 and filmed 23 years ago.
The Funny Thing Is, During this time #425 Looked just Like Strasburg Railroad #90.
If you ask me she actually looks more like a PRR locomotive
@@amtrak_121 Honestly, what i'd like to see is for the Strasburg to relocate #90's headlight to the center of the smokebox & bell relocated to the top of the smokebox. so that way it looks just like how 425 looks currently. Couldn't have said it better, my friend.
She looks great in black, nice video.
DAMN, HOW STRONG IS THAT ENGINE!!?
Heard a crew say "Get a steam for a 5 mile trains diesels can take the locals" steam engines are much stronger then we think! I love Steams!
GM&N 4-6-2 Pacific 425 was build on January 12, 1928 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Eddystone, Pennsylvania.
Taken in October 1986
Did you know that the BM&R coaches used to run in NJ for DL&W/EL and later Conrail and NJ Transit? BM&R bought them in 1984 from NJ Transit.
Really nice video
If that consist were an autumn leaf on the RBMN main, she'd need a pusher alright!

I wonder if she can have a repeat soon in the future? I know that the CSX didn't mean to kill it! But when can she do it again?
They should make 425 into a Blue Comet G3 mock up...
No please no. She's beautiful as she is now.
Yep she will be back this summer or fall. But definitely this year. Who knows if she will be back in black or blue... I'm hopeing black! But it's all up to Mr. Muller.

Why couldn’t they keep 425 in her original appearance?
Because they don't but hey she looks great today i just hope they can make it like she was in the 80s probably in 2028 to celebrate his 100 years old
How about a 90/425 doubleheader excursion between Hoboken and Port Jervis in thr future?
Where is the whistle that was on 425 right now?
Just think 15 cars and no Diesel helper, those's were the days.
Len.
Anyone know what happened to this road.
@trainmaster844 thank you for telling me
She looks like strasburg 90
why does she have 2 tenders?
For extra water.
First one is her tender, the 2nd is a water tender.
is that a PRR 3 Chime
SnakyFace Gaming Yes it is
@@dcoursey82 sounds like LIRR G5 39 and PRR K4 1361 together
Does anybody know where the whistle is right now? Should probably put it back on 425. Probably sounds a bit like LIRR G5 #39's whistle!
+brian falzon She wore it recently at the start of the 2015 season, when she met NKP 765 in Jim Thorpe, PA.
Zephyr4501 I see, well where is it right now?
brian falzon Most likely with the rest of the 425's whistles, probably in Port Clinton, or is currently being worn by the 425.
Zephyr4501 Hope it's not scrapped because it sounded beautiful!
brian falzon I'm sure it's still around. And, you're right. It is beautiful.
i heard its going back to black
it aint suppost to have friction bearings for long
Look at my profile pic.
nice train but change the color ALREADY
