      On the rear leave the preload alone and go fully counter-clockwise with both the rebound and compression adjusters. Leave the front end standard.

    I have a bonneville speedmaster 2018. I went on a road trip out west, loaded down, and I weigh 250lbs. It was rough. Would a rocket have better suspension? You think. I'm looking to travel some more. Still had fun.
    Side question. What do you think about trailers, one tire?

    • @RichDunn
      @RichDunn  11 місяців тому +1

      I think the Rocket 3GT with aftermarket suspension would have been better. I can't recommend trailers, but if you are going to have one, I can't think of a better bike this side of a DCT Goldwing or K1600B, than a Rocket 3GT. The other two have better wind protection and reverse gears which is handy on a heavy bike. But they are also more expensive to buy and require more frequent servicing. If you're brand loyal to Triumph a Rocket is a nice upgrade. It's a much heavier bike though, so try before you buy. But it's beautifully built, and the engine is a classic.

    • @RichDunn
      @RichDunn  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Marco. Yes, exactly the same suspension on both models. The seat is slightly lower on the GT, but the shocks and forks are the same. If you are about my height and weight I'd go with maybe 12 clockwise clicks of rear preload, just because it's very slightly lower than the R to begin with.

    Thank you for the informative video. I have a Rocket 3 GT, recently replaced stock exhaust with competition werkes, close to 40 pds lighter, and eliminated the fender which is few pds saving as well. I’m 6’1” 195pds, no paniers or pillion, what would be your recommendation for adjustment given the weight savings mentioned above?
    Thank you again for your time and advise.

    • @RichDunn
      @RichDunn  3 роки тому

      I would increase the rear preload to max. Unless someone is particularly petite and light, that's pretty much a recommendation for everyone. Because your bike's sprung weight has been lightened and you're not 250 lbs or anything, The rear preload can probably be softened slightly and the rebound increased. This should provide more movement in the rear shock, a software downstroke, and a smoother controlled upstroke, so you get fewer kicks in the backside over big bumps. The front will then have slightly more weight on it. The forks preload and rebound will probably still be about right, but you may want to increase compression slightly to reduce dive. Hope that helps!

      The nature of the beast I'm afraid. Any low-sitting bike has limited suspension travel, so it has to be over firm. It's probably why I like Adventure bikes now I'm older. I transferred my TORQUE plate to my Streetfighter V4. It'll probably move from that to my Multistrada V4 I'd imagine. Thanks for the compliment on it!

      @RichDunn  Рік тому

      I'd probably advise a better shock altogether. Reach out to Maxtons if in England, or Traxxion if in the US. But as for the standard, I would go max rear preload, up the compression two clicks, and up the rebound three clicks. The front end should be fine. But if it squats too much under hard breaking, increase the front compression a smidgen too.

    Hi Richard, Really great video mate, I'm 5ft 11 weighing 95 kg and my partner is 80kg, wanting to set bike up so is a little more comfortable for us also having it aggressive for me, can you advise what you would recommend for all suspension settings and also the tyre pressures, we just purchase a brand new rocket 3 gt 2022 first registered in January 2023, I've done 1000k I just checked tyre pressure because it was truly smashing the shit out of us and it was set at 35 psi front and 44 back, I lowered to 32 psi in both and oh my gawd what a difference in comfortable ness and handling but though I would ask a pro ?

    • @RichDunn
      @RichDunn  Рік тому

      Pressure-wise, I like to stick to the manufacturer's recommendation. However if you ride spiritedly, two-up, and in warm weather, you can certainly drop 2-3 PSI, because they will gain pressure under use based on those three factors. Suspension wise wind the rear preload to maximum height (mandatory), to quicken the steering and give the rear shock an easier time. Slacken off compression slightly and increase rebound a little more at the rear. At the front, increase compression slightly and keep rebound standard. Let me know if that helps?

      I thought I'd already replied, but it's not showing, so apologies RST! On the rear leave the preload alone and go fully counter-clockwise with both the rebound and compression adjusters. Leave the front end standard. If the rear is still too firm for you, then you'll need to have it re-valved, or replaced with something else. If you're in the UK speak to Maxtons; JHS or Steve Jordan. If you're in the US, speak to Max at Traxxion.

      I'm not sure, but it's very decent. It was over 80F here yesterday and I was pushing it hard through 200 miles of mainly twisty roads and I couldn't get the pegs down. I did skim my left boot three times, but I was pushing it like a sports bike a lot of the time. Clearance is at least as good as my old R1200GSA with low suspension. Triumph claims there are 2 degrees of further safe lean angle 'after' you have worn through the feeler peg bolts. Not that it's designed with it in mind, but I'd be comfortable riding one on a track day at a short and twisty track. It's surprisingly good, as are the brakes I found out when two deer suddenly leapt out in front of me!

    I like a sporty sharp ride and do take a pillion sometimes.
    What would you recommend?
    Also this might be a stupid question but what if someone has already adjusted a settings? How do you know what it’s on, or is it a case of winding everything out fully until it stops (I assume it stops!) and then tightening everything clockwise the required amount?
    Thanks so much in advance!

    • @RichDunn
      @RichDunn  2 роки тому

      Yes, wind the adjusters fully in or out, then work back the opposite direction o make sure you have factory settings before starting. You'll need rear preload on max height/firmness. And two clicks of compression and rebound. The front I would leave stock. It's firm enough and should have better steering due to the max height rear preload. the quality and travel length of the rear shock is the limiting factor. But this will improve things no end for you.

    • @RichDunn

      I'm 6ft 2" and about 17 stone at the moment. So I would go with exactly the same as my video. Leave the front end stock and one full turn of both rear rebound and compression. and nine turns of preload. It should then handle ripples in the road a little better and steer slightly quicker, without upsetting the front end. Let me know how you get on!

    • @RichDunn
      @RichDunn  3 роки тому

      Hi, Elizabeth. Rear preload should be set to max. I would increase compression on the rear by at least two clicks and a click on the front. Rebound I would increase by one click. It will help, but two up, particularly with luggage, you may have to invest in a better quality custom rear shock. The front forks are pretty good, as standard, but the design of the bike (and any custom style bike) will always restrict the length of the rear shock meaning ride quality/comfort at the rear will be a compromise. Another thing that would probably help significantly is to buy a Corbin saddle to replace the stock seat. they do require about a thousand miles to bed in properly and provide the most comfort. But if you otherwise love the bike, changing the shock and seat could be the way to go. If you're in the UK talk to Maxtons Engineering. If you're in the US talk to Max at Traxxion Engineering. Hope that helps!

      If you like to be relatively hard on the brakes entering roundabouts and leaning to decent angles, the first thing I'd do is wind the rear preload to maximum height, to quicken the steering and give the rear shock an easier time. You may have to slacken off compression slightly and increase rebound slightly at the rear. At the front, increase compression slightly and slacken off rebound slightly. Hope that helps!

    Hello sir. What would u suggest for a short rider like me? I'm 5'5 and I want to lower the bike so that I'm not tip toeing too much. But not compromise the ride and handling so much either. Thanks for the advice.

    • @RichDunn
      @RichDunn  3 роки тому +1

      Hi there. That's tricky, because for a shorter rider, you ideally want to lower the rear preload. The trouble is it is already on its lowest setting (the default is lowest possible). I don't know why they did this and Ducati is the same with the Diavel too. Even if you could lower it, then it would slow the steering of the front. However you can reduce the preload setting no the front, by turning it counter-clockwise. Even though the front is lowering, angle wise that will also lower the rear a smidgeon. Not as much as if you could further lower the rear preload, but it will help. It will also help it steer better, so long as you don't run out of ground clearance, which will be marginally less. However, my advise to you is to work with a motorcycle suspension business, to re-valve the front forks and rework to replace the rear shock, and set them up to suit your height, weight and riding style. This is likely to cost you $2k out the door, but will be the best money you've spent on a motorcycle for a very long time I'm sure. I'm sorry if this is not better news as a personal POV!

Especially here in India the roads are pretty uneven with lot of bumps and potholes. What suspension setting would u recommend. Currently I have also reduced the tyre pressure by 2 psi to get a comfortable ride. Thank you for your help.

    • @RichDunn
      @RichDunn  4 роки тому

      Hi! All heavy muscle cruisers have to have short and stiff rear shocks to support the weight and keep the seat height acceptably low. You can improve both the comfort of the bike and it's steering by raising the rear preload. I'd say about 10 clockwise clicks (mid point of 20 available) will be about right for your weight. I would go down two clicks on compression front and rear, but keep the rebound settings the same. This will be more compliant when hitting a bump while still controlling the thumps as the springs unload. Keep an eye on the Corbin web site as they already have a touring seat for the GT (would fit an R too) and are going to do a gunslinger style for the R model - they take about 1,000 miles to fully bed in, but should be much more comfortable than the sock seat, which on face value had decent padding, but the shape of it locks you into one position, which get uncomfortable over time. I hope that helps!

    My weight and gear is 85 kg, height 1m82. What should my suspension settings be?

    • @RichDunn

      I would would go fully counter-clockwise with both the rebound and compression adjusters on the rear. And clockwise nine clicks on the rear preload. Leave the front end standard. Let me know if this helps!

      @@RichDunn On my rocket 3R I have for preload a total of 34 clicks available, for rebound 3 1/4 turns available, compression 4 3/4 turns available . I set up your recommendation. I driven with standaard suspension setting 7150 km, it was good, now I will see if this suspension setting is even better? I will keep you updated with the results.
      Thanks

      @@jean-pauldeschrijver741 It takes a bit of practice to 'feel' what the adjustments are doing. It won't turn the R3 into a comfy sofa, because to keep the bike low and to manage its not inconsiderable weight (plus a rider), it has to have a stiff shock with a limited movement to it. An Adventure bike it is not. But take it on some twisty roads, and use some positive counter-steer, and if in doubt which gear to be in, choose the lower one each time, and roll on the throttle as you progress through the bends and I think you'll see that it will steer more sweetly for you. And perhaps be mildly more comfortable too. But as mentioned, it will never be a floaty comfortable ride. It's a beast and it rides like one too.

    @Richard Dunn I just purchased my Rocket 3 Gt..... I love it however one thing I hope happens is a slightly taller wind screen,
    and perhaps a little help from you and my fellow Rocket 3 people.... Im 5'8'' 170 pounds and I find the ride is much too stiff. Even riding through a minor rut on the highway feels awful, any advice to what setting I need to be at without making the bike bouncy and unmanageable ? Dont be afraid to give details, .....a comfortable ride is a safe ride
    thanks

      Firstly congratulations! Screen wise I will be sticking to the tiny R screen, which provides more wind blast but less buffeting. Given your height and weight. I would say increase rear preload four clicks (clockwise) and check your feet when sat on the bike with it upright, as the seat height will slightly rise. If okay, go with that, or back off click by click until comfortable. Triumph do not specify the 'range' of movement in their adjusters, just what the standard and recommended (solo/luggage/blah) settings are. With this said, if the adjusters allow, go one click out (anti- clockwise) on both the front and rear compression and rebound adjusters. In theory the bike should steer a smidgeon easier and there will be a greater range (movement) of suspension travel at both ends, but not to the point that it because soft and bouncy like a dirt bike or anything. If that's riding better, but not quite right still, I'll presume the firmness will be more at the rear for you, so see if both rear compression and rebound will go a further anti-clockwise turn. Let me know if this benefits you!
