RMS Olympic - The Magnificent Ship

- RMS Olympic was one of the most beautiful ocean liners that ever sailed the seas. She was built in 1908, launched on 20 October 1910 and brought thousands of soldiers into safety in the First World War. She is the only remaining vessel that sank a U-boat 103 from Germany during the war.
Her come back after the war, earned her the nickname "The Old Reliable" by many people. The 1920's was the biggest adventure time for Olympic, during the great depression of 1929 it was clear that Olympic didn't had a much longer career... in 1935 she was sold for scrap.
There was much critic about scrapping the Mauretania and Olympic. Even president Roosevelt in 1935 wrote a message to Cunard White Star Line to save the Mauretania and Olympic. In 1937, her empty hull was demolished in Scotland. Olympic sailed since then off into History.
Olympic really doesn't get the recognition she deserves. She basked in the glory of being the first of a trio of unprecedented liners. Then her doomed sisters met their fates and she was cast out of the limelight. People remember Titanic because she sank but everybody forgets about 'Old Reliable' because she was scrapped and forgotten about. Not the best way to honour her loyalty to White Star or the people of Britain.
Paul Heenan I know it's a very late reply but your absolutely correct the Olympic was a great ship and should get more recognition
She needs to be put in a battleship movie now!
@MrGriff305 Of course not. Titanic had had a sensationalist existence even before she sank. She was bigger mainly by weight due to the reconfiguration of her deck plans and other additions that came. What Olympic had, Titanic was meant to be better and perfected. Mainly eliminating the 2nd B deck prominade deck and turning B deck into more first class cabin space. Adding ultra luxurious parlour suites, adding the Cafe Parisien as well which wasn't available on the Olympic until later service. And of course enclosing half of the A deck prominade as passengers complained that the Olympics deck was too exposed to the high winds out at sea. These changes made Titanic heavier and more luxurious at the time... Britannic would have been the crown jewel rivaling both her sisters, but sadly was called into war service and was never able to be a true luxury ocean liner.
Titanic, Brittannic at the bottom. Olympic should have been turned into a museum.. So much for Mr. Thomas Andrews hard work, and all the guys at Harland and Wolf who made the sister ships happen. Same said for Cunard not saving one of their four stackers
i live in belfast the place titanic was built so i see harold and wolff often!
That's cool Liana. Warm greetings from Canada
thanks i would love to go to canada one day
I always wanted to see Ireland.
@@10lianaaa If you can go see the last remaining white star ship. The Nomadic which has been renovated to be a mini museum I think.
They shouldn't have scrapped this ship. It is one of the most beautiful ships ever created. It makes me so sad that its gone. :'(
yep they could of keep her otherwise I would be able to see the last remaining white star ship
well at least she didn't tragically sink like Titanic.
AwesomeJohn23 it looks like titanic
Me too :(
Awes
RIP to the R.M.S sisters . They were beautiful vessels
Uhhhh... Actually, there was over 1200 R.M.S vessels, Most are scrapped, ony around 50 R.M.S Vessels exists today, Including the RMS Queen mary. (Not including wrecks)
@@dadumbderpster666ooferdoof5 i dont believe he gave a number? simply put "RIP to the R.M.S. sisters". A correct statement as potentially he was referring to the Titanic, Olympic and Britannic of which were sisters and are no longer with us.
@@kieranwright8431 well, I was saying that there are more R.M.S vessels, he just thinks that there is only three.
@@dadumbderpster666ooferdoof5 but how are you to know he thought there was only three? he never stated that
@@kieranwright8431 Just saying, Jesus christ, do you ever shut up?
Olympic - the beautiful ship that was *truly* unsinkable
Cian Davies the Godzilla of the three ships! King of the ships!
T
She literally sank multiple ships without a scratch
Think of the millions it could've made as a museum.
She was the soul survivor and they scrapped her. Thats a tragedy in itself. The irony is that now even under water, the Titanic and Britanic are the survivors now.
@SRTBird 96
Britanic will win if so
The titanic and brittanic are currently the last two remaining examples
Brill to see 1 of the finest ships built in Belfast in color and RIP to those who died on her sisters Titanic and Britannic and also to those who died in the Lusitania
ss olympic RIP you will be forever in my heart and in my soul.
the golden age of the sea.
the olympic died to feed others in need really, olympic glory to you.
I love you for all eternity.
Olympic Titanic Britannic.
White Star Line.
immortal.
When the Cunard and white star merged the Olympic got scrapped, then the company was Cunard white star, then 1 year later they broke apart. Now the Cunard is a fancy cruise ship thing and now the white star is now kind of bankrupt
The Olympic was scraped because It was put out of service because there were a different kind of cruise liners coming
Olympic was already outdated when the SS Imperator and SS Leviathan came along. Not to mention ships like the Normandie
It was also scrapped during the time when the Cunard and white star merged, creating the Cunard white star, then one year later they broke apart and now Cunard is a rich cruise liner company and the white star line is now poor
Wayne Walker frick the other Cruise liners
Why didnt they turn her into a museum?
Don't tell I need help. For I care more about Ocean Liners than people. I mean it. I rather be cold, dark & heartless, rather than being kind & compassionate. I will do whatever it take to save future Liners from going to the scrapyard. Even if it means shutting down my feelings forever.
Legit cried a little
Rest In peace
The Olympic
The Titanic
&
The Britannic...
Although it's really sad to see her scrapped, most of her furnishings survive today, namely the White Swan Hotel in Alnwick. remember that this is only 4 years before WWII, and if she had been around for it, we might have lost everything from her had she been torpedoed.
The Mauritania was also scrapped in the same recycling yard with the Olympic.
Did they saved some scrap like at least one piece to be in a history museum
Rip in peace
-Ram my ship- RMS olympic
Is the ships bell still around?
Beautiful ship. One of the biggest insurance scams to ever take place.
Just just a fucking theory and its dumb its ovbiously not real
Look at this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_Olympic
Reed Douglas
Should be yes thinking about the MS Hawk incident
We should put some money together and have a replica Titanic/Olympic built.
I was going by what I read in A Night To Remember, so I might be wrong about that.
after titanic's disaster Olympic got 46 more lifeboats, twice bigger(longer) rudder, 4 protection in ww1 10 x 76mm guns, 9 x 25mm guns, all waterproof walls higher till C - deck.
Hello very nice comment Greetings
What is the music playing during the news of her scrapping?
I misss u Olympic me and u was so much in common we both lost our sisters and both scrapped 😭😭😭 plz respond this is a cousin call
So sad
Freedom!!!!
No no no Aquitania was Titanic , Cedric was Olympic , Mauretania was Britannic , Oceanic was Georgic and Qe2 was Andrea Doria . Don't forget of coarse Queen Mary she was German.
bertrumbum fishfuker GET FACTS RIGHT IDIOT
Jonathan Her your an idiot for being rude
Goodbey olympic😓😓😓😓 but you put the poseidon ost 11 escape song in the end
@SuperTitanicfreak every time I think about the Queen Mary in Long Beach, I can't help but wish that were Olympic's fate. she should've been preserved, turned into a hotel/museum.. or indeed, barring such a wonderful fate, sunk & cradled by the ocean.
Right, there was a high unemployment rate in Jarrow, her first stop after retirement.
Wonder if she was the only ship of her class to not have sunk
Yes she was
So the Olympic was just a remake or a second build of the rms unsinkable titanic but a little bit smaller
olympic was first then titanic
TITANIC IS THAT YOU???
Roosevelt was the only famous guy who wrote Cunard White Star a note to save the Mautania, and maybe even the Olympic too.
There are even now rumors that dictator Mussolini wanted to use Olympic by the invasion of Egypt for transport ship.
No!!!!!! Why dont you make the Olympic as a museum like queen mary, Uss iowa, uss Missouri, HMS VICTORY, :'(
whats the song playing?
Hmm, I thought they refitted her like Britannic after Titanic's sinking. With the large davits and such.
I think they should have done with the Olympic what they did with the Queen Mary.
why did they take it a part it could have been the last sister ship that is related to the Titanic and the Britannic
Not everyone knows that !
é massa essa musica
Courtesy of British pathe bye-bye Mauritania ship a good old ship sold for scrap.
Did they paint the Olympic? 1:28
Yes its a kind of naval camouflage of ww1
I can't understand nothing of what you're saying, sorry. If you are saying about Olympic being scrapped in 1912, no, Olympic was withdrawn from service on 17 April 1935, and scrapped in January 1936.
Olympic entered service on 14 June 1911.
Titanic didn't even survived the 1920's.
That's bullshit. Olympic had different bridge wings then Titanic and Britannic had. Olympic still had the same bridge wings before Titanic's disaster as well after the disaster. Olympic's and Titanic's interiors were also complete different. Explain me that how some people can come up with "The great Titanic switch".
Too bad the sold her for scrap, she was the only remaining sister of Titanic.
LordAnestis the BRITANNIC is still around, just under 40 ft of water, and protected from ocean currents. Only 5 bodies are on the ship and all went down willingly
What about the gigantic?(britannic before it was a hospital ship)
in theory, the Titanic and Britannic are still about and view able (If you have the money)
Your all forgetting about the last sister to the titanic, THE SS NOMADIC. You can still go on it and it's in dry dock in Belfast Ireland.
LordAnestis they only show the britanic but NOT the Olympic
I really wish they had never scrapped her and instead left her to a fate similar to that of Cunard's Queen Mary as it would've been beautiful to have seen the last remaining Olympic Class Liner kept as a reminder of these grand ships
Kieran Johnson if you ever want to see the last White Star ship, go to Belfast and see the Nomadic :).
Or learn deep-sea diving and visit the wreck of the Britannic in the Aegean sea in Greece.@@Shakudo4385
She was old and we were in the middle of a recession.
Sadly she had to go.
If the Olympic struck the iceberg, the iceberg would have sunk.
+RMS Olympic Just making a general joke about her history of being on the winning side of collisions. Thanks for poking, though. I mean, an iceberg wouldn't sink in the first place, right?
+RMS Olympic Whether or not ice sinks depends on its size? Are you serious? I'm afraid I'll have to go ahead and end this conversation here. Good day to you.
Here we go with that stupid conspiracy theory, I knew it'd be somewhere in the comment section. All you have to look at in the Titanic wreck to confirm it's her is the promenade deck, which was enclosed near the front of the ship with windows, rather than being completely open across the entire ship like on the Olympic.
Am I the first one who think that this comment was a joke? if yes, then how sad.
That's the titanic
Olympic was one powerful ship.
If Olympic wouldn't was scrapped, now she makes more money than then, when she was ocean liner. Very missed shot of owners.
It wasn't a missed shot if you look at it in their perspective. Olympic was old and technically outdated and it cost money to run ships like her. Therefore, the ship had to be either sold to a company to continue her sailings or to the breakers to be fully dismantled. Needless to say, she was sold to the breakers.
Collision record:
RMS Titanic: Iceberg (fate: presumably melted several months later). Titanic lost.
HMHS Britannic: Unknown sea mine (fate: its shards went down before Britannic). Britannic drowned 50 minutes later so maybe it's a victory for Britannic.
RMS Olympic:
1: HMS Hawke (fate: survived but was sunk by U-boat during WW1).
2: SM U-103 (fate: sunk).
3: Fort St. George (fate: survived but was sunk with a torpedo during WW2)
4: United States lightship LV-117 (fate: sunk)
Olympic survived all 4.
Olympic had collisions with 4 ships, and titanic had one with an iceberg and sank, I think they should have made more water tight compartments on the titanic
Olynpic also shrugged off a dud torpedo and an uncharted shipwreck as far as I've heard. It also collided with a tugboat at the end of the maiden voyage.
GameSlimia the titanic never sank the Olympic did. Go watch the doc. Titanic the ship that never sank.
Rev Rebel You do realize that is not true. its still a mystery maybe if we make a TARDIS we can find out
Rev Rebel thats not true. Its just a conspiracy. Titanic did sink.
She was one beautiful ship not only that but she also served her country. She deserves more recognition
she was a good ship. They all were
I agree. I wish they would have made the Olympic a museum, instead of scraping her.
Nightmare Moon Would've made a great prop for the Titanic movie.
Noa Garcia-Brown You are so right. Why did I not think of that. Oh man I am so.....ashamed *sad look*
I'm sorry I said that. I didn't mean to sound like I didn't care about the Olympic's history. I merely just wanted to add to the list of why they shouldn't have dismantled her.
I just wanted to add I'm very ignorant with ships right now but I'm eager to learn more.
Why does it look almost the same as the titanic ? by the way i dont really know a lot about ships
The first ever Olympic class Liner..... so elegant and so beautiful
October 20, 1910 - Launched
October 10, 1935 - Final Voyage
If her final voyage was just 10 days later, it would have been exactly 25 years since she was launched
Honestly, I think the Olympic was better than the Titanic, A truly glorious ship. Its a shame not as many remember her.
I think Titanic 2 . 0 would be better than Olympic ( Titanic 2 better than Olympic)
I can't believe she didn't have a massive send-off on her last voyage, people should have been out there by the thousands saluting her.
R.I.P., "Old Reliable". *salute*
All the decorative carved woodwork was purchased at auction by the owners of the Swan Hotel in the UK. You can see all the finer dining rooms and the French fireplace mantels all in situe, as the dining rooms in the Swan Hotel (Alnwick).....and the stained glass too. Lots of pics on their website.
Why in the hell would they scrap this beautiful ship it could have still been used . And been here till this day so dumb gosh this pisses me off
Can you imagine being on a cruise ship now that had four funnels spewing smoke and fumes
Olympic and Maurtenia should be saved...like Queen Mary
bye, Olympic....
hiiii I am a messi fan to forca barca we are playing betis today what is ur prediction
MagicMessi fuck u with messshit
These stunning liners truly should have gotten way more then this in the end . They served England & the great US during world war I . We owe these old girls a lot . Thank God we have videos of them ! They did pave the way to the new comers but they were never as glamorous as these girls were . I have sailed 3 times on the QM2 & I feel like its just a cheep version . I sailed in 3 different suits but not even close ...
Seharusnya jangan di bongkar, biarkan saja seperti itu, untuk menjadi kenangan :(
She should of been dry docked & made a museum, that’s rivalry for you far better than Cunard’s ship’s at the time. God rest old reliable & her sister’s
Olympic was actually unsinkable, and the strongest of her three sisters. She came so close to death multiple times, she was torpedoed and by some miracle the torpedo was a dud.
They should never scrapped her for money because she was last one last this long out 3 sisters Titanic an Brititanic too bad they scrapped the very least sister I think she would make more money today I would love be have the world I would love to see that too bad they scrapped hopefully they'll make a new ship all three again I really hope so maybe be us American well try to be nice but I would love see real Olympic
i like the use of the death of the poseidon theme from Poseidon 2006
Kapal itu tetap indah sampai sekarang, tidak tertandingi
Titanic gets all the credit but it was actually the Olympic that was unsinkable
They knew war was coming in Europe again , scrapping these ocean liners was a stupid decision.
Who wish the RMS Olympic was a museum ship
Lo que peor me bienes es que acabará a si el olimpic es como si tuviera vida no se merecía desguazar lo
It is truly magnificent! Excellent Job with the video. It gave me goose bumps.
Disgraceful. Hate to see history dissapear like this. What a shame.
You are still living in our hearts olympic just like your 2 sisters
The artwork photos on this video are truly incredible! Viewed in HD they look so real. Brought a tear to my eye from 2:50 watching the only survivor from 3 Olympic class ships to survive & going to scrap.
This is an amazing video. It is as if I am seeing pictures of the ship as if it was taken today. It is really a great example of how the new Titanic will look like one it sails in 2016. I love both Britannic and Olympic, but my heart is still with the Titanic. Good work!
Olympic wasn’t always in dazzle paint in WWI. She just had blackened funnels and guns at one point.
You mean in October 1914? They repainted her a couple of times throughout the war.
Should of just sank instead of scrapped. The 3 most iconic ship designs ever 2 are at the bottom of the ocean and one got scraped. If only they would of known back then how popular old ships like that would become. Now people are trying to bring back one of them even though I doubt a 1907 design of a ship would last for more then 15 years. Yes people would go one it the first few times but after that it would be just a normal ship and there would be nothing to do on a ship from 1908 that is designed exactly the same. They would hold up better as a museum.
I still don't understand why millionaires are making humanity crazy with a Titanic II comeback. If I had the money I would have recreated a golden age liner based on the Olympic and Titanic in modern cruise ship material, with old and modern style mixed together - but still keeping the exterior very much like the 1910-era.
It's very easy now to say how Olympic should have been saved but you have to remember that poeple looked forward not back at terrible things. After the great war people wanted to look ahead not back at a disaster that was still clear in many peoples minds.
Plus when WW2 came Olympic would have been too outdated to run and would have been scrapped for the war effort anyway. It ain't easy to store an Olympic class liner.
The Olympic was a great ship the sister of the titanic r.i.p titanic but the Olympic was like a sister to the titanic rip Olympic why you do this to her Whýyyyyyyy!!!!😢😢😢😢😢😢😣😣😣😔😔😔😔😭😭😭😭😭
"The Old Reliable" :)
The colour really adds to the sense of scale!
Olympic was indeed a magnificent ship, a beautiful. She will be forever in my memory.
Tyler Frederick I think it's wonderful that you love her so much.
In my memory too. I love her, if they did make a museum. I would live there
RMS Titanic also is a beautiful ship.
i wish olympic had the chance to be a floating hotel or museum like the RMS Queen Mary
It nearly was. Maybe the interested millionaire at the time did not want to buy her for more then 80.000 pounds I think. Olympic was sold for 100.000 pounds to the ship breakers. What I discovered lately is that they even wanted to put Olympic on cruise service, but that idea quickly vanished. It was shortly after the last voyage of Olympic that the Cunard White Star was discussing the cruise service idea, like Mauretania did in her last years.
1:49 : FREEEEDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!
It's a nice thought that the Olympic should have been preserved, but reality is quite another thing. There was a surplus of ships at the time. Preserving ships is not an easy task. Most importantly, it was the Great Depression at the time. Sending her to the scrapyard provided jobs, money, and food for many people. Feeding hundreds for several years was a noble end for her.
Wish they could have saved her .
love this music
very nice!!! It's great to see her in true color! very nice job to the person who added the color to those old images.
She was undoubtedly a truly magnificent ship (in sheer contrast to her two other sisters)!
"in memory of the greatest and strong ship the OLYMPIC, Olympic we will miss you😥😥😥😖😇
eodocjcjif,
ceo,of UA-cam.😥😥
The only surviver and they scraped her.
human is stupid
They scrap The Olympic for materials and what has been made since then!? They should've made it into a museum but no.._ some prick scratching his hole decides to scrap one of the biggest legends known to man. R.I.P RMS Olympic
why do your pictures say Titanic in color?????
The site was called Titanic-in-color which gains more attention from the audience.
Wow
