      @@Charlesbjtown right, I’m just a bit mad that my schrader inner tube popped out between the rim and the tire and eventually exploded there, because all the air went there and made sort of a bubble . With a presta valve, i could’ve quickly released the air, but i needed to find a tool to stick in there and i was too slow. Anyways, I guess everybody has their own thoughts about things

    I converted my bike from presta to schrader as the presta valve stems were bent from use and started to leak air. You can buy inner tubes with all metal schrader valves which are the same size as presta holes and are secured to the rim in the same way, I don't understand why bike companies don't use them by default.

      Im doing the same presta are terrible to pump, terrible to put slime in, they block up with a bit of slime bypassing the valve making it hard to pump, the valve unscrews itself when you screw the pump off, you need an adapter to pump it and the top tends to bend. Never had an issue with a schrader other than the valve going out of alignment as the thread didnt have a lockring, never damaged one on my landrover offroad thats bullshit, i reckon the manufacturers just adopted it because its more suitable for tubless or something . It was gay on racers and its still gay but ppl will justify it cus its the current thing and all the cul bikes have it

      I personally haven't seen any companies selling a tubeless ready wheel with Schrader valves. I don't think it would be too difficult to set up if you wanted to do it. You would have to widen the valve hole out for a Schrader valve and then probably use a valve stem designed for a car and in theory that would work. It's on my list to try one day.

    in presta defaults, I feel like the top is easy to bend with a short pump (did it by accident on a bike which wasn't mine) and take longer to plug / unplug from your pump as you have to turn the nut each time. Also, for road bike which often have high pressure, it's easier to loosen the pressure if it rains and you want better adherence on wet floor.

    You can put Presta in a Schrader rim: all you need is an extra lock nut. You install one all the way at the bottom of the valve, install the tube and then put the other one on like normal. The locknut inside stops the valve from hemorrhaging out the larger hole in the rim.

    Good video. Thanks.
    One question, near the end you mention "don't do it" - don't file out a Presta hole to fit Schrader. What are the downsides?
    (The reason I'm thinking of doing this is that Schrader tubes are more available where I am, and they are cheaper. Plus I like having the option. It's not absolutely necessary, though. I can also just forget about Schrader valves and stick with Prestas.)
    I realize that removing material from the rim might weaken it a bit, but as far as I can tell it isn't a real-world concern, at least with mountain bike rims. But I don't know that for sure.

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  3 роки тому +4

      Pretty much the downfall with drilling the larger hole for a Schrader valve is just like you said, you are potentially weakening the structure of the wheel. I went the safer(in my opinion) and more time consuming way of filing out the valve stem holes(versus drilling) on my Trek 3700 and they've held up fine over the past 10 years or so. I did it for the same reason you're looking to do it, Schrader valve tubes were far more common where I was living so it just made sense.
      In my opinion as long as you're careful doing it and obviously inspect for cracks or damage, you'll most likely be fine.
