Always had Schrader Valves, so glad to learn about Presta valves, which I see more here in Europe. As a retiree returning to biking after 50 years away, this was a very helpful video.
Absolutely brilliant. I was pulling my hair out with frustration as after 2 years, I had forgotten how to inflate my tyres. Thank you so much for saving me. Clear simple ….silly girl proof instructions.
This was really helpful. Thank you. You taught me that I have a presto valve. I also learned that I was not properly opening the valve so air can get in the tire. Lol. All these years .
Riding bicycles since a child, I was always taught to lift the lever, put it on valve stem, and THEN close (lever down). Start pumping. So now the professional cyclists are saying the opposite. Did the mechanics of bicycle pumps change since the 1960's?
A lot has changed since the 60s! But I'm going to say yes... The old silca pumps had no lever for a presta valve, you just pushed it down and it stayed in place.
@@TheMarkList thank you! I just bought 2 used road bikes, which I can't find any info on online, so I want to make sure I am riding properly and safely.
Thank you for this video! It was easy to follow and helped me out endlessly. I've never had to put in a tube that wasn't an old school regular valve stem.
They have pressure guages and pumps too that work with a presta valve and have pressure guages either built in or some type of display showing how much pressure is in the tire as you are pumping it up.

David, thank you so much for the kind words! I just woke up and this was the first thing I saw when I checked my email and computer, so thanks for making my the start of my day amazing!
Thanks for your video. I noticed that for inner tubes with Schraeder valves is the option for two valve lengths? one being 48 mm while the other is around 35? mm . Is there any rim compatibility that should be considered in which valve length to use? Thanks
Yes, rim profile will always be a consideration no matter which type of valve and or tube/tubeless set up you are running. This is why they come in various lengths. If you're not sure, always go for the longer length. That way, you most likely have something that will work, even if it's a bit tall/longer than needed.
I purchased a downhill mountain bike for my son, I would like to learn how to adjust the compression in the forks and the rear spring. I would like to know why so many used mountain bikes are sold without pedals? And what would be a good cheap beginner pedal to get ? I would like to know how to adjust the brakes so they don’t squeak and how to adjust the brake hand grip so that it applys the correct pressure. I would like to know what a good set of brake upgrades would be? I have seen these seat height adjusters that mount on the handlebars what are they called and can you recommend one and show how to install it? Thank you!
Sorry for the late reply! Your comment got lots in the shuffle... Can you tell me what dh bike you purchased for your son?? Also, happy to help you get pedals and all the other problems handled. Do you have a budget for pedals?? What's cheap to you? Under 50 dollars US? or under 100 dollars US? Let me know. I'm here to help!!
Curious what floor pumps do you use? Looking to get a new one, my current duel pump has taken its last breath so I’ve been using an adapter on my presto valves and it’s seems when ever I unscrew the adapter off I some how unscrew the valve core very frustrating. I watched your other video on valve cores problems I definitely need to get a Valve Core tool to ame sure the stem is tight. Thanks You have a new Sub very easy to follow your videos 👍🚵🏻📹
Does it matter what position the shredder/presta valve is in when pumping it up? I see some people put it in the 6 o'clock position and some in the 12 o'clock. Physically speaking, doesn't the air want to travel up so if you pump it from the top it'll have a harder time making it's way down uniformly? However, we are talking about a circular rolling device. So maybe the air just sets as you ride.
People put it at 12 o clock so the sealant is at the bottom. It's not hot air so it won't rise or sink for that matter. If it's a tube, it doesn't matter where. 12 o clock is closest to the person ans you don't have to bend down to take the pump off as much. Make sense?
I've never sealed a tire for tubeless wheels but I imagine that when the sealant is wet and you pump in air, if the valve is at the bottom (6'clock position) it would be like pumping air into water cus the excess sealant will flow down to the bottom of the tire.
I have a Schrader valve . I went to put in air in my tires ( they were low) but not flat and now they’re flat. Not sure what I did wrong. I’ve tried a few times and when I press on the pump, it stays at zero even when I’m pushing it
what do you do if the presta valve comes off? Mine did but the tire did not deflate. I could not find the valve but could not figure out why the tire did not go flat? I Traveled 50km this way. The tire is still staying up but I did not try to add air yet. thanks for doing your video it did help.
Paula, if there's still air in the tire, then the valve core is still inside and can probably be removed and replaced. If the core actually shot out, you'd have no air in your tire/tube.
I am challenged at time with the readings I get from gauges when attempting to fill my bike with presta value. I get strange pressure reading. Any idea what may be causing this. This never happened with my shraeder value tires.
If the valve is slightly clogged, then the initial pressures will be off. I usually push the valve down before I pump up the tires. This releases some air but also clears the 'airway so to speak' and allows air both in and out so that your pump will read the correct pressure. I also recommend getting an actual digital air gauge to measure your air pressure. Let me know if this helps.
@@TheMarkList That's one reason I'm here searching videos, how to put air in presta valves AND how to check the pressure when all the tools and equipment I've acquired over forty years has to do with Schrader valves, still have yet to see pressure check demonstration 🤷
@@TheMarkList Thanks, but I'm assuming I'll just have to break down and invest in presta tools or better yet scrap those irritating things and buy Schrader tubes first chance I get. 🤔

You'll need a screw on converter that allows a standard car/Schrader type pump to fit on. Then you can use the compressor

That depends on the rim and what tube size you are using etc
