      For travel packs, would you mind testing both a smaller and a larger laptop at the same time? I have to travel with both a work and personal laptop and it's hard to find any info for most bags on that usecase

    Mentionning the lack of a false bottom is exactly the kind of detail I follow you for, this alone is enough to make this bag a deal breaker for me, your own bag seems a better choice for this form factor and design.

      I pre ordered the sympl commuter pack and received it before I saw this review. And didnt really think about the false bottom issue. But I did just check mine and it 100% has a false bottom that’s about 3/4-1” off the bottom and is padded pretty good with foam under it too, so definitely no issues with any laptop damage

    • @ech8074
      @ech8074 2 місяці тому +1

      I’m fully sharing your opinion. Even some lack of attention to details that makes them imperfect is a potential deal breaker for me. For example, some brands make expandable backpacks while emphasizing steal protection or waterproofness. And then what’s the point of waterproofness if a rain can go through that expandable mesh and ur staff will be wet…

    • @markpuffer9615

      Would this be good for under the seat for planes? Also, if a bag is lacking a false bottom, I use part of a pool moodle cut to fit or foam rubber. I just make my own.

    • @houssamalucad753
      @houssamalucad753 3 дні тому

      @markpuffer9615 it would probably be good for under the seat since it's relatively small. As for the false bottom, I wouldn't recommend making your own, you can, but it's way more janky than one that is built in.

    The organisation in a backpack only really works if you can leave it there and always carry the backpack with you. I prefer a tech pouch and packing cubes as I can transfer to what ever sling, daily carry or travel bag or big haul duffle I am using. I use the Side-by-side pouch but would possibly go for the tech pouch from Alpaka if I couldn't get a replacement. Same idea but I can take out an put on the desktop anywhere I need it know exactly where my cable clutter is stored (less need for various USB plugs but still needing a separate cable for each device as two or four need charging at the same time).
    In one everyday three way carry backpack I inserted a 1" (25mm) square cross section dense foam strip the full length of the base of the laptop compartment. This never budges holds the laptop in place. This is so easy to do. Overtime the foam will decompose but just fit in another strip.

    Hey Aaron. I know you're not a gamer, but I appreciate you adding a 17" laptop now to the reviews. A lot of gaming laptops these days are getting bigger than a 16" Macbook Pro.
    If that model (Dell XPS i7 9700) is correct the 14.74" for the width is definitely going to cover 99% of them now. At 9.77" depth, it maybe still won't get some of the deeper laptops that are 10.25", but it's close enough.

    I love most things about this bag. Really well designed. I know this is purely subjective preference, but I do not like the coating on the exterior nylon. It gives it a shiny effect that just isn’t my thing. I’m also never outside or in rain with my EDC bag for any period of time, so that plays into it.
    If this thing was straight 840D with no coating, I’d be all over it.

    Not every bag has to appeal to everyone.
    Having a tech pouch there really is useful when you use it to go to the office.
    I would use that instead of my actual tech pouch which I take out of my bag and put on my desk.
    One thing I always wonder about is how to access these clamshell openings at your desk?
    I like it when the zipper goes a bit more back so the opening becomes more top loader. Like the evergoods mpl.
    I use a messenger/brief or toploader for that reason for the office.

      Welcome to the community! To be honest it's a GREAT laptop sleeve, just doesn't have the best false bottom. I'd recommend not slamming your backpack down on the ground, and if you want maybe get a very thin laptop sleeve to have an extra sense of protection, but maybe wait to get that unti you have the bag and you are sure laptop + sleeve can fit!!

    Fantastic job with the review and all others! I finally purchased this bag but in Sympl x Pedal Mafia version (ultimately the same). There are additional design corks that irks me a bit. 1. The laptop department security latch gets in the way of my Asus Zenbook 15inch when inserting 2. The front zip pocket is not on the same side as the side bag handle (I can live with this one).

    I have this bag now for a couple of weeks and I love it.
    Only the Airtag holder isnt that well done: the Airtag slips easy out. So I did a quick fix for this: i cut a small slice on the inner mesh of the Airtag pocket and put the Airtag then inside the pocket in between the meshes. Fixed it! Simpl should copy this 😉

    Great review as usual - continue to love the format and the content. Enjoy the b roll of past Aaron critiquing the comfort - it looks like more work to shoot but it adds depth to the review. The tech centric pouch and comparison with Aer is spot on- still, this is familiar to your bag in many ways. I don’t really care for much organization in my packs as I prefer more simplicity and rely on independent small pouches and try to reduce my wires and external drives and batteries to the bare minimum for the sake of sanity- sometimes having everything with you feels like taking my entire desk on the road which is not the point of a backpack and portability. I love how this size can force you to be more thoughtful about what you consider essential - would love to work my way down to using a 22 to 24 liter backpack for one bag travel for work and personal travel trips and as a daily driver to and from the office. Sadly with the gear I need for work, I use a 27 Liter.

    I *really* liked the look & design elements of this bag when I first saw it online -- the sleek silhouette while still having an externally accessible water bottle pocket, the quick access zip pockets on the front in exactly the two orientations and locations I'd want, comfy looking straps and handles, and the full clamshell opening. I clicked the preorder on one, and have been very happy with it -- it is definitely a great looking EDC bag IMHO. The biggest downside I've found is that the built-in water bottle pocket is almost impossible to use if the bag is fully packed out. For example, SYMPL's packing cubes require the full width of the interior, making them incompatible with storing a water bottle in that pocket.
    OTOH, I did find that the clamshell style opening allowed this bag to pack out and hold more than my similarly sized half-zip EDC bag. Basically I was able to pack fairly thick (or deep?) throughout the bag, and then close the lid, press down, and zip it all closed nicely. In a bag that doesn't zip open completely that bottom half can be hard to pack into efficiently, or stuff down in to, whereas a clamshell can almost behave like a compression packing cube in this respect. And that exterior front pocket still has enough of it's own volume to hold a rain shell or light hoody. I expect I can use this 20L as an extended 4-day weekend travel bag no problem.

    • @Nomads.Nation
      @Nomads.Nation  4 місяці тому +1

      totally see what you are saying, but in their defense, there are so many backpacks that have this style of water bottle holder and they all eat into the main compartment... that's the whole design, it's literally in the main compartment. Great for looking sleek, not as great for maximizing capacity

    • @Jim_in_Portland
      @Jim_in_Portland 4 місяці тому

      Good point for sure. This is my first bag with such a compartment, and I loved the idea of the sleekness and wonderfully clean lines of this bag while still having external access to the water bottle. What I hadn’t thought about, and now have learned, is that when you pull the water bottle out to use it items inside the bag may shift making it difficult to get the bottle back in again in the “quick access” manner one might have hoped. But at the end of the day this design is still (to me) way better than no water bottle pocket, or an inside only pocket. No regrets - I totally dig this EDC bag!

    I agree with you, the lack of a false bottom and really no extra padding below the laptop compartment is a big negative for me. I also found the very rigid structure of the panel that makes up the front of the main compartment is too much for me. I would guess that the reason it is there is to provide something for the tech pouch area that opens outward from the top of the bag needs an anchor. However, it really limits the capacity of the main compartment making whatever you put in the mesh pockets stick further out into the space. The water bottle pocket on the side also encroaches into the main compartment further taking space. To me, this feels more like a 16 or 18L bag. I would like the bag much more with less structure in the middle.

    I received this bag a few weeks ago - I want to love it but everything feels too stiff and tight for me. Like you said, this does NOT feel like 20L. With the stiff structure of the bag, everything feels like I'm squishing it to make it work. I tried using the admin compartment for my tech, but it could only handle some of it, so I'm using my CAP 1 in the main compartment for tech. This replaced a 22L bag I was using, so this obviously colors my opinion. It may not be an issue for others.

    The best EDC I’ve seen. I’ve started to feel like my CPP is a little bit overkill and tiny bit too bulky for EDC, and this checks all the boxes. I’d still say the CPP is an ideal one bag if you can only have (or afford) a single bag, but now that I’m getting into carry, I’m thinking about a better EDC and this is a great contender vs a briefcase like the Tokyo work bag
    Things I don’t love about the CPP for EDC:
    - I don’t love the saggy clamshell when not full of cubes for travel
    - admin pouch needs more organization (the sympl nails it)
    - a little too thick for EDC
    - no side handle
    - don’t get a ton of use out of the side pocket
    - doesn’t self stand

      The commuter pack is definitely the bag for you then. It Checks all your boxes of CPP dislikes. It’s for sure my favorite EDC I’ve ever had by a landslide. @@1BagTravelerGuru a different fabric would be nice. My last hesitation is the back panel - the CPP just nails it from a soft and comfortable perspective, and I’ve seen the back panel described as “hard and stiff”. Any thoughts?

    • @1BagTravelerGuru
      @1BagTravelerGuru 4 місяці тому

      @@kunalmishra9463 The back panel is perfect in my opinion, the channels in the back panel allow it to curve to fit my back and has good air flow. The CPP super soft back panel is ok but commuter packs back panel I find is much better as the load distribution is so much better because the back panel is a little firmer. But the firmer back panel doesn’t mean less comfort, as it is so much more supportive and still conforms to my back shape.

    Almost perfect bag for me, really want to try that material. I never understood side access laptop compartments. You have to unzip longer length. If your laptop is large, the fit and entry feels way tighter and you're potentially clashing with the zippers that might cause scratches on your laptop. No false bottoms is just stupid too. Of course, there's that one advantage, but like how many times do you access while on a luggage? I'm curious how it can fit larger laptops? Or is that just a result of not having false bottoms? You can't let gravity do the work when dropping your laptop in, unless you keep the bag on it's side, but it's an upright self-standing bag, not a side standing bag...

    Hi ive been using the aer citypack pro for a few months but cannot stand the weight of it, the strap doesn’t seem to support enough for me, is there anything that i might like if i like the cpp but want a lighter and less thick version?

    • @Nomads.Nation
      @Nomads.Nation  4 місяці тому

      Totally get that it’s a heavy bag but Aer is known to have some of the thickest and best padded shoulder straps out there. This Sympl bag is pretty close. Maybe you just need a lighter bag with lighter/less bulky shoulder straps? If so maybe Bellroy bags are more up your alley

I am able to try the metro bp in store, but no the able carry, is it more similar to bellroy materials and build? Like softer and less rigid? The alpaka is probably half the price of the able carry.

      well to accommodate a larger size (this bag being 20 litesr) it needs to be certain dimensions. But there are great smaller bags out there, check out the Alpaka Metro Backpack, Bellroy Classic Backpack, and Able Carry 13. Their shipping costs for this bag are ridiculous, with most international options priced at $100. While it could be a nice bag, the shipping cost based on price is just stripping money off customers.

    • @Nomads.Nation
      @Nomads.Nation  4 місяці тому +9

      I agree that it seems expensive, but I don't think accusing a new, small company of a few people trying to make a great product "stripping off customers". Truth is I launched my own backpack company and I can tell you that logistics are so complicated, ESPECIALLY with large boxes like these and ESPECIALLY when every country has different rules/duties/taxes. I would just hope that in the future we can assume these small businesses are trying their best and aren't all inherently evil

    •  4 місяці тому

      @@Nomads.Nation , thanks for leveraging my lame comment. I understand the logistical hassle, and I have seen quite a few companies charging a lot for shipping bags while others do not. Most of the expensive ones use shipping companies that charge outrageous prices. While they may not be evil, they have a $60 markup just for the price range of the bag, this is like a 30% insurance cost, and the only shipping option is express international at the highest rate. This price does usually not include taxes or duties, which are charged by UPS or FedEx upon arrival, and another $50 fee every time + taxes. I order a lot internationally as we only have some of those products here in NZ and there are other ways to ship at much better prices. I had a chat with one bag company recently, they offer shipping at a high price too and they reckon the shipping partner was too costly and are in the process of changing their logistic partner

      I ordered this bag from sympl and had it shipped to France from the USA and was $50 usd which is pretty standard, unless it’s a very large brand that has their own warehouses in all countries and can ship for less I doesn’t get much cheaper. But I highly doubt they’re making money off people charging $50 to ship to France from the USA, they’re most likely losing money on shipping as it’s a pretty big box and international shipping isn’t cheap.
