Shout-out to the wealthier parents that label all the good gifts from them and worst gifts from Santa to not make things weird between kids in different economic classes.
That's why I've always believed it's best for the big presents to come from mum and dad, and the candy, books, stocking stuffers, clothes etc from Santa. Because firstly he doesn't get to take all the credit for the coolest thoughtful shit! But most importantly, when the kids go back to school in January and are excitedly telling eachother what they got for Christmas, those little boys and girls who didn't get as much (But got what their parents could manage doing the best they could, with an incredible amount of thought, work and love going into it) to have them think "If Santa only gives good gifts and visits the 'good' boys and girls.....am I not good? or am I not good enough?" Which is just a fucking heartbreaking thought that I get every Christmas/January. Christmas is about love, family, togetherness, charity, kindness etc - and not just for your immediate family.
Me and a friend got into collecting rocks. He would get geodes and fools gold. Santa gave me a black beach stone that was shaped like a seal. At the time I was disappointed. It's now one of my most cherished objects. My dad while working on a ship in Alaska, had my mom tell him that on my wish list was "a cool rock", and he spent the time to beach comb until he found that perfectly seal shaped rock and he mailed it down from Alaska for my mom to wrap and label as "From Santa". God damn it dude! I'm not crying, you're crying! Me and my dad have never had the best relationship, but that rock is fucking special. There is more love in it than any of the "cooler" rocks my friend's dad bought for him. I love you Dad, sorry.
In Terry Pratchet's discworld series there is a Santa parallel called the hogfather. Death stands in for him one year and is shocked to find out that the quality of gifts is different based on the economic background of the child. He complained about this to the elf who responded "Life's not fair" and Death responded with "But I am" and just gives the poor kid a puppy. I just felt the need to share.
Love that book. The reason why Death is standing in is great: children need to learn how to believe the little lies so they can grow up believing in the big lies: justice, truth, and compassion.
That's what my parents started doing when I got older and was helping for my younger siblings, I think it works way better and makes the kids have more appreciation for the parents
My pops sat me down when I was around 6 and explained that Santa isn't real, that he and mom work hard for these gifts. Then told me that some people really enjoy it, so don't ruin the fun of it for other kids. I've always respected him for it.
I remember figuring it out when I saw Sharpie on all of the gifts one year. At first I said “we don’t have a Sharpie!” and then every other gift from Mom and Dad used the same fucking Sharpie 😂 I wasn’t even upset because gifts are gifts.
My kid's 10 and sounds like a grizzled veteran when he plays Arma. I taught him how to read a map and use a compass playing in a wasteland server with him, 2 weeks later I hear him making accurate callouts. He learned important life skills like map reading and I can't think of a more fun way for him to do that. Video games are an underrated teaching method.
I went on a blast through the past listening to this, from fischer price great adventures, to poo-chi, to bop it, and super soaker, gameboy color and n64, rescue heroes, and all the other toys I had in the 90s and early 2000s.

Back in the day they made a Dukes of Hazzard Big Wheel that had a hand brake that when pulled would stop only one of the rear wheels causing you to spin out uncontrollably in front of your neighborhood crush. 100% would be a lawsuit these days but times were different then! 😅
“ he’s going to grow up playing the exact same games as I did at the exact same time” I am literally doing this with my son. I got him an old game boy with Pokémon red version and he thinks it is the coolest thing ever.
I was talking to my mom when I was in my late 20’s about how I was so upset that I didn’t get the Voltron’s Lions when I was like 10 years old. Voltron had been rebooted at the same time so she bought me the lions. I put it on a shelf at her house, forgot I had it, my kids found it when they were little so she opened for them and it ended up broken. STILL don’t have those damn lions! 😂
So that explains that feeling of every time I see Donut, I feel like I have seen him a loooong time ago, a wierd kinda deja vu. Another mystery solved, and a pretty awesome one at that
My Dad bought a Tyco racing set for my two brothers and me... Of course it has four lanes ... Of course he went to the hobby store and bought himself a souped up car with traction magnets at the back end...

Pretending Santa is real. Why doesn’t Santa bring expensive gifts to poor kids? Two possible answers. 1. Santa can’t bring gifts that are more expensive than the parents can afford, so that kids don’t start to love Santa more than their own parents. 2. (I like this one.) Santa doesn’t bring the presents. Santa is limited to a very small number of miracles each year. The purpose of these miracles are to inspire other people, including parents, to act in the benefit of others without requiring recognition. Such as giving gifts to their children. The parents provide the gifts, but selflessly don’t require recognition. So they say the gifts come from Santa. Once the children understand this, it should inspire them to act in benefit to others, perhaps in Santa’s name, as not to receive the accolades of their actions. Since it is the parents buying the gifts, not Santa, it is logical that the gifts cannot exceed the parents’ budget.
You ever hear the "Santa's a fat b*tch" from ICP? Only ICP track I'll still listen to, will blast it all holiday season trying to get the Xmas music out of my head. Has a line about Santa never going to the hood.
The second shortest guy in my boot camp division was a Pilipino that had asthma. While in the gas chamber, he took the his inhaler out and took a hit off of it.
