I turn 74 this year. Happy to have made it this far and still be living and marginally healthy. I try to live in the present rather than the past, but at our age it's natural to think back on how different things were in our childhood than they are now. The beautiful little town I grew up in, with its downtown full of local businesses, is long gone, wiped away by the Walmart they built on the north edge of town. The beer we high school kids occasionally imbibed has been replaced with hard drugs, and the whole town looks like hell. I feel sorry for what people today are missing out on, and don't even know it.
I grew up with Woodys grandson I just texted this to him. I went to see Woody's Great Grandson Krishna Guthrie two night ado. You can find Krishna in the Killington Vermont area. Great story as always I had my Sat morning coffe with Otis
I went to the first Woody Guthrie Festival. Such a great time. It was the same year that Wilco/BillyBragg's Mermaid Ave. came out and Billy headlined the evening. I believe one of Woody's sisters was still alive at the time and was in the audience . Even though I live in Oklahoma, I haven't had the chance to go back. Also you mentioned Tim Eaton. I saw him once at the Blue Door in OKC. Unfortunately for Tim but fortunately for us their wasn't many in the crowd. After a few songs Tim stopped and said that he was going to take a quick break and told us to grab your folding chair and meet him on the patio, there were maybe 10 of us. We put our chairs circled around him and he finished the show. Nothing but his guitar. That cat can play and sing! One of my favorite shows. Thanks for sharing Otis! If you ever play the festival again I will make it a priority to attend, humidity and ticks be damned.
You can visit The Guthrie Center in Housitonic Massachusetts too. They have a soup kitchen, gallery, shows and a ton of history. It happens to be the church in Alice's Restaurant the movie where Arlo (son of Woody) rode his motorcycle into. It is a wonderful center run by Woody's Family
I first performed This Land is Your Land in 1966, as a 1st grader. Our school’s music director was big on teaching the important standards of our country. Thanks you, & Mr.Chlcut , for keeping our music alive.
You just brightened my day. A flashback to that exact same moment in time, but when I was a second grader and we learned and sang this song as a class. It’s a joyful memory. I recall at that time being under the impression that it was an old classic written by a man in a much earlier time period.
Wow, I never knew Woody Guthrie wrote 'This Land Is Your Land' in a flop house amongst all those people living on the margins. Holy crap I literally never knew that and I've been singing that song since I was little (and I'm old now!) Wow, you're stories are just wonderful, Otis. I just found out a few weeks ago the Tom T Hall ( one of Otis’s faves ). wrote Harper Valley PTA. I was shocked. Don’t understand how I didn’t know that. Love Tom T’s The Year That Clayton Delaney Died. Asked so many people to play it at parties and and sitting by the sea. One friend used to sing it like he’d lived it. I’d pay $100 to hear that again.

I sit here rewatching your channel content. I have a hard time calling them stories. You put down the real deal. As an elementary schooler in1965-66, our music teacher offered-up This Land is Your Land. As children, we probably didn’t get the entire meaning. There was desegregation, Vietnam, & many other issues of that era. We sang that song at the top of our vocal abilities. Many thanks to Woody & Mr Chilcut, our music director. Between Woody Guthrie, The Beatles, & Stones, I was marked forever. Not to mention Faron, Willie, Waylon, & JR Cash. Thanks for the memories !
I was staying in Okemah for a few days before the Festival some 20 years ago. Someone told me where I could find a little piece of the sidewalk downtown where Woody had scratched his name in the wet cement: "Woody '28." He must have been about 16 years old, which was about the time his family tragically fell apart and he started his wandering ways. I wonder if it's still there.
Great video...Loved your comments about Jimmy LaFave. I used to produce concerts in upstate NY...mostly Texas Alt Country artists...Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines, Hayes Carll, and Susan Gibson, to name a few. We were lucky enough to book Jimmy and his band. They were playing at Falcon Ridge, and we were to get them the day after their scheduled performance. I went up to see them play, but their slot got rained out. We chatted about logistics for our show, and he said, " I hope you don't mind, but we'll probably play longer than we talked about...we got rained out here, and the guys are itching to play". The show lasted nearly three hours. As you said, one of the nicest guys you's ever wanted to meet...and possibly the best interpreter of Woody Guthrie's music (and Dylan's, too)
I'm 45 & remember having to sing This Land in elementary school. ... Nowadays I have an 8yo daughter who doesn't know about that song. Something I'm going change with her on our own time. ... Yet still, feeling a bit sad that it may be something that isn't going to be as well known as it should be moving forward. thanks for mentioning Fave. You got him right. I had the opportuntiy to speak with him in Seattle @ The Tractor Tavern after he had opened for Reckless Kelly around 2002. He said that he was OK through and through even though he had been born in TX and lived in Austin. He was the energy behind the Ribbon of Highway tour that had contemporary songwriters performing Woody's songs in venues across the US. A great American.

I walk the grounds of the National Cemetery in Dixon, CA several times a year, both my folks are there. I like to walk and read the headstones, each one has a story. One of my favorites is close to where my parents are, it reads "I'd rather be fishing". I always get a kick out of that..........

Was Joel Rafael there for any festivals? I’d “opened for him a few times in the North San Diego County area back in the 90’s. He was a huge Woody fan for many years and he used to come to Texas a lot, for the Kerrville Folk Festival.

I feel bad that I live an hour away from the festival and have never attended. Too hot. I drove to town to photograph the statue for an ATM graphic. You could see it for years at the OKC airport. I have attended many a fundraiser for the festival at The Blue Door in OKC. I need to man up and attend the festival.

Every student who comes to our school learns this song. Every verse, all of them. Most of them are immigrants or the children of immigrants. The entire student body sings this song at the end of the year picnic. While they learn many things during their time with us, this song is among the things we help them learn that we are most proud of.
Been loving these videos. So much history in each of the ones I have watched. You can see Otis passion all throughout the story telling and that is what makes it great.

We have a program in my extremely rural Pennsylvania county that will fix feral cats for $35. They have a RV and do different towns every week. We are overrun with them. Just today one of my beagles got out and ran to the pine trees for a snack. They use the needles for a litter box

Ah, thanks for this. Woody and Pete Seeger - met the latter when I was 14 and he was so quietly humble as he walked with my family at a concert in a park. 60 now. Good thing music lives on.

Great listen as always. Met Jimmy Lafave in Stillwater when I was a teenager, moved to Austin a few years after him. I’ve loved him ever since. He was a friend, he made beautiful music, he was special, I miss him a lot. It was great hearing you talk about him. Thanks Otis!

Was Joel Rafael there for any festivals? I’d “opened for him a few times in the North San Diego County area back in the 90’s. He was a huge Woody fan for many years and he used to come to Texas a lot, for the Kerrville Folk Festival.

Great chat! I also admire Woody Guthrie. I loved his book, Bound For Glory. Otis, I'm not sure if you are aware of the meaning of the term 'fellow traveler', especially in the context of Woody Guthrie. Also, I found it funny that the mural of Woody Guthrie omitted the "This Machine Kills Fascists" sign that Woody painted on the guitar. Maybe they're afraid they might offend the fascists?

I feel bad that I live an hour away from the festival and have never attended. Too hot. I drove to town to photograph the statue for an ATM graphic. You could see it for years at the OKC airport. I have attended many a fundraiser for the festival at The Blue Door in OKC. I need to man up and attend the festival.

The entire student body sings this song at the end of the year picnic.
While they learn many things during their time with us, this song is among the things we help them learn that we are most proud of.
Been loving these videos. So much history in each of the ones I have watched. You can see Otis passion all throughout the story telling and that is what makes it great.
Thank you Otis, excellent work brother. I was ruminating on Woody's (and your music), we do need to keep it alive, if for nothing else, for future generations, we owe that to artists like Woody. Woody Gutherie just might have been the real reason GOD MADE OKLAHOMA. Thanks Otis for reminding us of how important Woody was to America. I used to love hearing Flatt and Scruggs doing "THIS LAND". It's the people who understand that song that have made this the Great Country that America is today even with all it's flaws.

It was suggested I post a picture but I don't believe I can. Anyhow we rescued a kitten from the very spot you mentioned about 3 years ago. We're figuring the it's a great grand or a grand child of one of the cats you helped save.

I was in Okemah in November on my way Eastward. Same Hotel. Took photos in the same memorial park. A pilgrimage of sorts.

We have a program in my extremely rural Pennsylvania county that will fix feral cats for $35. They have a RV and do different towns every week. We are overrun with them. Just today one of my beagles got out and ran to the pine trees for a snack. They use the needles for a litter box

I saw somewhere a documentary and Pete Seger said he and Woody were hitchhiking and stopped to get coffee and Woody was writing on a napkin and he wrote originally " this land is God's land etc..." and I can't recall if Pete suggested changing it or Woody just did it. I know you would love watching it. sorry at 72 I can't recall things perfectly might of been a PBS special. but to hear Pete tell the story is pretty awesome. and so are you Otis.
