This is the third Harvard psychiatrist I know of who has seen patients benefit enormously on a ketogenic diet. As they say, once is chance, twice is coincidence, and three times is a pattern. You would have to be a fool to deny there is a legitimate pattern of people with mental illness getting better on keto.

@@jen1778 True, and even worse for the so-called "food" being pushed by the USDA because it's subsidized. That's why it's so difficult for researchers to conduct a large scale, double blind study on keto for mental health: Imagine if millions of people -- and especially SCHOOLS! -- stopped buying overproccessed "food" like dwarf wheat (which has only been in the human diet since the 1970s) and high fructose corn syrup and all the other overproccessed junk. . we'd have a healthier population, both physically and mentally, and the producers of that junk would lose millions of dollars in profits.

I am from South Africa and my path has crossed with the most amazing psychiatrist that introduced me to this keto treatment. IT WORKS!!!! I have been on anti-depressants and mood stabilisers for 15 years. These past 7 months on keto changed my life. I am so much better and full of energy. I had no desire to live and now I cannot wait to get started in the morning. I am also slowly coming of my meds. I do keto and intermittent fasting and I feel great.❤❤❤

Wonderful, hopeful video. I am a clinician - Licensed Professional Counselor - in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Having been in private practice for over 30 years, I have seen many people overcome anxiety and depression by changing their diet. I am always amazed at the physical and mental/emotional changes that come with a ketogenic diet. I am 70 years old and had put on some weight over the years - become physically and mentally sluggish, even though I have been on low-carb (50-60 grams a day) for many years. At the beginning of COVID lockdown (2020) I started OMAD with 30grams or less of carbs a day. Within a few weeks my energy was amazing! A skin rash around my eyes that I have had off and on for over 20 years completely cleared and joint pain that I had attributed to “old age” disappeared. I am a believer!

I’m trying to figure out how I can get her on a low carbohydrate eating when she’s at this age and just is what she wants, so as you mentioned, when people just aren’t ready they’re not gonna do it but I’m trying to come up with a way to make it feasible for her to start doing something a little bit in the right direction because I think I don’t think I know that that a lot of her problems. She’s been seeing a psychiatrist for probably seven years now and they just keep putting her on more medication and more medication. Look at Dr Mary Newport on this channel, and she is the author of books and talks about how she helped her husband he went to alzheimer's by treating him with MCT oil without him even understanding it was connected to keto. Good luck. My heart goes out to you and your granddaughter. My D level was 11. Maybe that test result had to do with obesity?
Anyway, since then I have made home nursing visits to two individuals who said they felt like they were 'crawling out of" their skin. All 3 of us were D deficient, obese, female. Aged 19, 50, and 65. We all got relief from prescription D2.

I can't speak for the pros, but as a personal account of what I do: I use MCT powder (Garden of Life because it has the C8 and C10) because of price and I just use 1 scoop as it says on the container. You will probably need to work up to the amount directed though. Just start with a third and use that until you have a few days of no gastric discomfort. Then add a third. Repeat until that's good. Then use the directed amount. It really works. Otherwise you can get nausea and loose bowels. You get adapted to the stuff fairly quickly if your gut is otherwise happy. It can take some people longer to adapt. Enjoy.

I posted this in another upload from this channel, but am pasting here also:
Our son is 19 with the same diagnosis. We are trying time restricted eating (7 or 8 hr window) with a largely keto diet otherwise, while keeping high value carbs such as wild rice, sprouted lentils, etc. and various vegetables and blueberries. Perhaps a bit over 50 grams carbs per day, but the breath keto meter shows frequent ketosis. Also using berberine for improving insulin sensitivity. I have a relative living in Clearwater who had terrible triglyceride numbers, until I told him about time restricted eating. After one year, his doctor said she'd never seen such a dramatic improvement in that short a time. He got off heart meds. Note he is someone with his own mental health issues, & continued to smoke, drink and eat pizza! This shows time restricted eating can have massive benefits. If you throw in other things as are discussed in this upload, well I guess time will tell... We are also doing things to feed the gut microbiome like resistant starch, inulin, ground flax and psyllium husk fibers, and are using chicken and cod liver (along with beef liver at times), bone stock, and mushrooms shown as neuroprotective. Also using CBD which has been helpful in treating schizophrenia in the literature, avoiding gluten, and mainly sticking with raw sheep products for dairy. His previous psychotic breaks resulted in hospitalization & were generally associated with high THC consumption. He may have avoided hospital trips had he abstained. At least for now he's continuing to abstain. Also, check out sleeping grounded (earthing), it is an important anti-inflammatory, and a quality of sleep booster. Lastly, our son's room had mild mold issues for years. We suspect mycotoxins played a role in pushing him over the edge with his first and some following breaks. We're using activated charcoal in the morning to sop up mycotoxins now, as well as better air filtration. All food is organic/self-harvested or backyard grown. He does cross country with the school team. Note he has spent several months in hospitals or group home environments a number of times, so his condition was very serious...
While this may all sound like a lot, I simply see it as returning to a lifestyle that many humans have encountered for a majority of our history. We can return to such practices without much extra cost. Peace.

I just Googled is it safe to do a keto diet while you're also on anti psychotic drugs? I got the answer that for most drugs it's fine, but that it's not safe with abilify which is quite disappointing. That's the one my daughter is on. And I'm really, really wanting to try the keto diet for her.
Although honestly I don't really trust google anyway. I think we're going to ease into it. And I am going to take some papers. I printed off to the psychiatrist and let him know that we are going to do this.

Not trusting Google is probably a good instinct. If possible, I strongly suggest working with a clinician familiar with keto. You can look at www.DiagnosisDiet.com/Directory to see if you can find someone to work with.

I reached out to Elhorn to inquire about the metabolic clinic in Arlington Mass. they quoted $33k a month for 3 months. I responded hoping it was a typo. Would love to help my brother who suffers from schizophrenia 😔

We believe they offer scholarships for those for whom the price tag is too big. You may want to inquire about that.

😮 $33k a month for what? Following a LC diet and IF is free!

If ketosis can reverse mental illness, does that help to find the cause? Is diet the actual cause of mental illnesses? Is all the crap that's in our food responsible?

    • @metabolicmind
      @metabolicmind  Рік тому +4

Good question. It's a complex answer, and while the food itself may not be "the cause," the effect it has on our bodies can start a cascade of events, including metabolic dysfunction, inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, etc. that can ultimately lead to symptoms of mental illness. So improving your food intake can help reverse that cascade and ultimately improve psychiatric symptoms. I hope that helps!

yes… it absolutely is the cause…junk food makes people sick… cancer diabetes dementia… all of it mental health is no different…
the roots cause of all modern disease has been identified… it’s grains carbs sugar and so on..
just eat meat fish eggs and butter or just meat frankly

stop prevaricating…. humans evolved eating meat and fat… the ultimate ketogenic diet.
ketosis is the natural state that humans are born into…
every human is born in ketosis… then once they come off the breast they get sick because they are fed modern garbage…
get over it…. psychiatry is on the way out…. the dustbin of history…

Hi, Intermittent fasting is the best and safest way to loose weight, which brings many many benefits.
Anxiety is the big one isn't it? And without Anxiety theres no Depression or Schizophrenia, is there.
When I came off MH drugs (Dreadful) Anxiety was the main problem that could have led me back on them again - but I managed with a similar technique to Dr David R Hawkins in his book Letting Go.

I wish the agencies/practices in Iowa would get with the times! It is a dramatic life saving change for those diagnosed with schizophrenia. It is criminal the way treatment has been carried out thus far. It's over time to start treating these metabolic disorders medically instead of stigmatized B.S.. Keto diet can only help your health period, antipsychotics in turn eat away your brain
    ..hummmm
