      Hey thanks Abhishek, I did enjoy it around Windermere and would recommend doing this to anyone. Not sure about my voice - probably a Shropshire mumble tbh 🤣

    An enjoyable watch, you seem to be making the most of your time and the low tourist numbers. Remember don’t pay the ferryman until you get to the other side. 👍

      Cheers GM! Yes I'm out most weekends now if i'm allowed! And it is nice and quiet I have to admit. Unfortunately, the ferryman wanted contactless and I had to pay as I got on - times have changed ;-)

      Hey thanks AFUK! Yes I think I was quite lucky with the weather. Mind you it was a bit cold on the top of that bus in reality! I think if it is sunny though you can cram a lot in just for the day without having to drive. I can imagine it would be quite busy though in normal times.

    I do that part of the world every 2 years .... it is beautiful.... I always sit to front right of the open top bus just so that I don't get hit by tree branches.
    There is a lovely little tea room just by the church in Mark's video where a absolute gorgeous meal that has to be tasted for a reasonable price...
    Thanks for the video Mark... I'm now officially a dedicated follower my friend.
    Keep them coming.

    Great video. I lived in Kendal for 5 years back in the 90s so this brought back some memories. In those days it was just a knackered old multiple unit doing a shuttle service backwards and forwards between Oxenholme and Windermere. No throughs trains from anywhere else.

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  3 роки тому

      Hi Roger, thanks. Yes I got the impression that platform 3 at Oxenholme was created just to serve Windermere and nothing much else? I would be interested in what Windermere station looked like before the supermarket. I guess there’s some photos on the internet but it must have been a bit more significant - certainly in terms of holiday traffic in the Summer.

      Hi and thanks for the comment. It's good to know I've helped. It'll be a bit busier in the Summer unfortunately but the weather will be warmer! You'll be ok and I'd definitely recommend the open top bus. Have a great time 😊

      Hey thanks global peasant, I’m glad you found it interesting. I think it surprised me tbh that you don’t really need a car to get right into the lakes and do a lot of stuff on the bus thereafter. And with it being an all day hop-on/off type thing that encourages walking as well. Cheers, Mark.

      Cheers. Yes it was a good day out I must say, better than I expected and public transport is pretty frequent (and quiet). I might go back up there when the steamer’s properly open as that was my original intention. Maybe national express could do an open top bus that would win my vote! 😂

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  3 роки тому +1

      Hey thanks Izzy glad I could help. The bus thing, if you ask the driver it seems to be a bit of a ‘zone travel’ thing so you just pay for like zones 1 but if you eant to go further, you just pay for adjacent zones etc. They’ve got useful leaflets on board and I really enjoyed it tbh.

    • @AymanTravelTransport

      In fact, it's better to get around Lake District on public transport, because I've heard many people complain about how horrendous the parking is over there with it costing an arm and a leg. Meanwhile, that parking money can comfortably go into a day ticket on the buses with some money to spare for lunch.

    Great video. There is only one lake in the lake district that is Bassenthwaite lake the others are meres or waters

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Colin, thanks for the comment. That’s really interesting about the different classifications - you wonder why it’s called the Lake District at all - one of those funny anomalies I guess that’s just stuck over the years. It would sound weird calling it The Mere District 😂 and organisations like Visit Cumbria refer to Windermere as a lake even when it’s got mere in its name! What I would like to know is, what’s the difference between a mere and a ‘water’? All the best, Mark

    I want to plan a 2 day break up at windermere, was thinkign fo just getting the train from manchester and goign up, renting a flat for a night.
    I think you cna get return trains tickets from bolton to windermere for £16, which is a single change at preston. Combined with that windermere bus service day saver of £8, 24 quid for a day out seems pretty nice. It will probably cost more in petrol to get from manchester to windermere.
    I've read you can spend abit more, £27 - 50 more and you can rent a kayak for 2 hours and go on the lake itself, or 60 for the whole day.

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  2 роки тому +1

      Hi WF! Yes I found it fairly cheap to get a ticket up to Windermere from Crewe, changing at Oxenholme and then you just get the branch line from there. I definitely recommend the open-top bus day ranger type thing - especially if the weather's nice. I think it'll likely be a bit more busy now but you can get around most places on it. I've driven up to the Lakes on many occasions and it can get a bit stressful driving around the lanes when it's busy. I think you can rent anything you like on the lake - lots of choice. Enjoy your trip!

    Beautiful! Though I would have expected more references to Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons 😜 Also, not many chain ferries around, there's one in my mum's village in Norfolk - quite a bit smaller though! (2 cars at a time!)

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  3 роки тому

      I’ve never actually read it tbh! The chain ferry is an interesting one because that’s immediately what I was going to call it then when I looked it up they called it a cable ferry(?). I’m not sure there’s any difference?

    • @TravelSignal

      @@LetsMakeaTrip Classic children's books from the 1930s. Kids with boats camp on an island :) And as for the Norfolk ferry, definitely a chain ferry as it has chains - maybe Windermere now has cables rather than chains, to pull it along?

      Hi Kauser, thanks for the kind words. I reckon you can’t go wrong with Windermere because you don’t really need a car and there should be a few decent accommodation options even at this time of year. The boat I took was tbh the only option at the time but I was determined to get out on the lake. I reckon the normal pleasure boats will be up and running this season and there’s a lot of other attractions like Fell Foot that has lots of accessible, all weather paths. Hope you both have a great time 😊👍
