  • Vanessa Wood, Veterinary Surgeon, from White Cross Vets talks you through the process of brushing your pets teeth, with the help from Pip.
    Brushing your dog’s teeth is easy to do and very important. It can prevent some serious canine health problems. Gingivitis and tartar build up can progress into the more serious periodontal disease. Bad infections can spread and can lead to heart, liver and kidney problems. So good dog dental hygiene really is important.
    Check your dog’s teeth and gums regularly to see what is normal so you can spot any problems.
    For the first few days, just hold your dog as you would normally do when you are petting him.
    Gently stroke the outside of the cheeks with your finger for a minute or two.
    After each session, reward your dog with treats and praise.
    For the next few days - after your pet has become comfortable with this activity - place a small amount of the toothpaste on your finger and let your pet sample the flavour.
    Next, introduce your pet to a pet toothbrush or finger brush.
    Put a pea-sized amount of toothpaste on the brush and gently raise your dog’s upper lip and place the brush against an upper tooth.
    With a slow circular motion, gently brush only that tooth and the adjoining gumline.
    Each day gradually increase the number of teeth brushed. But go slowly, don’t continue beyond your pet’s point of comfort.
    Build up to 30 seconds of brushing per side.
    The easiest way in is to go straight, pushing the brush gently from front to back along the gumline, like this. Then add in the gentle circular motion.
    After each session reward your pet with a treat and lots of praise.
    Brushing should be done daily but missing 1-2 days per week would not be a big concern.
    It is important to use canine or dogs’ toothpaste. It tastes better to dogs and the fluoride in human toothpaste can be toxic to dogs.

    Thank you for this video!! the vet has been telling me to just put the dental cleaning off till my baby is 8 years old and I'm so glad I saw this! Would you recommend the rubber training brush or regular small toothbrush if my dog has a lot of built up plaque? He's pip's size if not smaller

    • @WhiteCrossVetsVideos
      @WhiteCrossVetsVideos  5 років тому +1

      Hi Chelsea! We recommend the rubber training brushes to start with as they are easier to use. Once both you and your dog get used to the regular brushing, you can try out different brushes to see which one works best. If your dog has a lot of built-up plaque, we would remove it with a scale and polish to make the home-care easier. There's a special Dental Package for this. Perhaps your vet offers something similar?

    My second cat has an apparently common condition for breed cats(british shorthair) where his gums get inflamed from calculus and both of my cats develop calculus pretty much immediately. The vet tried everything and the only solution is to try to brush his teeth often. I hate to see him in pain from it... Brushing a cat's teeth with painful inflammation is pretty difficult. The only good thing is they love the taste of the toothpaste and Hill's Prescription Diet T/D Dental Care kibbles are pretty good. Sometimes his gums are better and sometimes worse. Having calculus removed every half a year would be such a pain in many ways. He hates it, I go bankrupt etc. My poor baby. I've used the small brushes, gonna try the finger brush now. Hopefully it's easier/better.

      The poor boy. Hopefully, the finger toothbrush will be a bit easier for you to control and won't be too harsh on your cat's gums.

    Do you have any advice for a puppy who won't sit still? My dog is okay with stuff around his mouth, but he thinks we're playing, when we try to brush his fur or teeth.

    • @WhiteCrossVetsVideos
      @WhiteCrossVetsVideos  7 років тому +1

      Have you tried it at times of the day when he is generally more relaxed or tired after a long walk? It's a case of little by little each day. You could introduce chicken flavoured toothpaste which will focus his attention on the brush.
      Please stick at it as it's the best thing for your dogs teeth in the long run.

    Hello great video!! I was wondering how often do you brush your dogs teeth?? Everyday

    • @WhiteCrossVetsVideos
      @WhiteCrossVetsVideos  6 років тому +1

      Daily would be ideal if you can get them used to it from the time they are a puppy. For an older dog new to brushing, daily may be difficult to implement at first. Try starting off at once or twice a week for an older dog new to brushing.

    I've been using a finger brush for two months with poultry flavored CET toothpaste. I do the outside of the teeth once a day.
    My spouse insists that I also do the insides; however, all the videos I've seen stress doing the outsides. Your thoughts?

    • @WhiteCrossVetsVideos
      @WhiteCrossVetsVideos  6 років тому +1

      Hello, firstly, good job brushing the teeth once a day! Plaque is more likely to build up on the outside, however, if you can get to the inside, behind the teeth to clean, it would be great.

    My dogs HATED this at first. Now they fight to be first..lol The little Havanese tries to stick his tongue in the American Bull Dogs mouth while she gets done. She's usually first. She tolerates it but the Havie now takes the tooth brush and holds it in his little paws to get his back teeth, I still have to do his front teeth.. I never in a million years thought I'd have a dog basically tell me he can do it himself. He doesn't like it when I take it to do his front teeth. I think if I allowed it he'd brush his teeth until he destroyed the toothbrush.
    I've even given him a different one as a toy, he just leaves it. There is someone he loves about the pet toothbrush and toothpaste. He will even go to the toothbrush box to try to get his toothbrush. He's only 4/12 months old.

    Can u apply dentastics

    • @WhiteCrossVetsVideos
      @WhiteCrossVetsVideos  7 років тому +2

      Dentastics are ok for occasional treats. As they are going to add calories to your pet's diet they can lead to weight issues. It's not a good solution to oral hygiene.

      You can start to brush your puppies teeth soon using a specially formulated toothpaste. Adult teeth usually come in between 3 and 6 months of age. Once they come in, you can begin brushing to get your puppy used to it.

      Hi Valerie, we would recommend a full examination to ensure there is no underlying reason why your dog is biting when you try to touch her mouth. If nothing is physically wrong, we would advise working with a behaviourist to help your dog cope with the new hygiene routine.

    Talk louder please...
    I never use that awful rubber thing!
    I trained all of my past and present little friends, cats and dogs, by feeding them treats with my fingers, then used a bit of peanut butter on my fingers...
    They learn fast that fingers are not for biting..
    Then I rubbed their teeth with a bit of peanut butter on my finger. Then eventually on a baby toothbrush... Then toothpaste.
    All of my animals open their mouths for me or let me keep them open with my fingers.... They may not love it , but they know they'll get a Dentastix after..
    And, I praise them and tell them how pretty they are and that they have nice breath.... :)
