  • On this special episode of UKICE (I Tell), we have a live recording of our latest Unlocked event with the “doyen of British elections”, Sir John Curtice.
Sir John needs little introduction to followers of British politics, as one of the UK’s best-known political scientists and the man who guides the nation through election nights for the BBC. Recently he calculated that on current polling, the Labour Party have a 99% chance of forming the next government.
With the election looming, Sir John reflects on historic election shocks such as 1992, through to the changes of government in 1997 and 2010. He also offers an insight into what it is like to crunch the numbers on polling day while the nation awaits the exit poll.
You can watch the event on our UA-cam channel: • Unlocked with Sir John...

“Labour voters come out later in the day”. Because the Labour vote is overwhelmingly of working age, so votes either on the way home from work, or in the evening after they’ve been home and had dinner. That’s why a few elections back it really was a national disgrace that polling stations in some places ran out of ballot papers in the early evening while others were turning people away who were still queuing to vote at 10pm, as those votes would’ve been disproportionately Labour supporters.

So Laura Kunssberg announcing the postal votes the day before an election got a free pass?

Even as someone who doesn’t like Kuennsberg, it’s not the same. A) it was a mayoral and not general, and b) all she said was ‘it’s going to be closer than you might think.’

@@dw-yl3ln They were referring to the 2019 general election, where Kunssberg tweeted that the postal votes were looking grim for Labour, before the polls closed.

@@dw-yl3ln It was in the 2019 General Election where she was privileged to view the numbers of postal votes for each party and announced that the Tories seem to have a hugely commanding lead. Coming before people went to the ballot box it was totally unprofessional and illegal and yet nothing was done about it.

1:06 _"It's against the law to publish any information based on how people have actually voted before 10 o'clock on Polling Day"_
Unless your name is Laura Toriesberg, then it's ok to let everyone know you've seen the postal votes on the day and what the vast majority of those voters have voted for. And don't complain to the beeb about it, it's NFI on their part.

What on earth is all this about? It needs some sort of introduction. And it's well out of date/time.

The false separation "UK in a changing Europe" implies is at the heart of the cascading catastrophes gaining momentum in UK. The entire population is of European origin. French was the preferred language for centuries of the nobility. British linked royalty led much of Europe. Yet today the little island of 76 million does everything possible to distance itself from Europe. Comically many Brits consider themselves closer to America located 3,000 miles away than to Europe only 35 miles away by tunnel. America's companies are taking full advantage of this foolishness as it "invades" UK slowly consuming more business.

The entire population is of European origin? No it isn't. Everyone in the UK knows that.

Europe can have a range of outlooks and historical context.
