I built one.. 40 M is good but the swr is to high on 30 and 20. Anyone have an ideas? It has been a while since I set it up. It could have been 20 was good. Either way it one was good and on 30 and the other, the swr was to high... Great video and very clean looking rig!
Thanks! I had another viewer comment that I failed to change one of the switches to 40m in this video, so I might need to revisit this antenna. I've also heard that the toroids might need some work...I hate those things.
@@westsideflyer7559 UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you adjust the wire of the vertical element for anything band EXCEPT 20 meters! Adjust 30m and 40m by adjusting the appropriate coils. Read the manual!
@@warplanner8852 I read the manual and that is what it said to do. The length of the wire provided is longer than it has to be. The OP mentioned it woulld not have a low SWR on 20.
The reason is wasn't resonant on 40 M, was that at 3 minutes, you should have flipped the other switch from the 30M position to the 40M position. You were testing for 40m while the antenna was set for 30 M. Be good to know what the swr was for 40M with the correct setting. Good video. Brent va7hum
Haha! Thanks! I might need to revisit that test! So many things to think about when doing this at the same time trying to record a video! Good catch and I will try and redo this...maybe tomorrow!

Hmm, If you have some experience with small components, yeah, I think it might be a decent first timer kit. The hardest part is winding those toroids, but only because they are so small. The first kit I built that had toroids was a disaster, I didn't remove the coating on the wire well enough at the solder points. and...well...it just failed.
Thanks! I got such a good deal on this radio, that I think I'll keep it for a long time. It was a gift! I also received the LC-156 backpack as a gift, really lucky.

@@BargainBasementHamRadio He was asking about the wire. The tenability of an antenna depends on the gauge of the wire. I have some very light stuff I was using with mine but it was very sensitive to the length of the wire and I had to shorten it to about 16' so it would tune. I changed it to 14 gauge stranded and the tuning was as specified.
@@westsideflyer7559 I got it. Good point. I am using some very light wire here too. Like most of us, I am sure that I have a roll, wad, or mess of speaker wire somewhere! I plan to revisit a few things from my videos this year. I just need to find where I left that motivation.
Congratulations you have a very clean tidy 703, great rig.
Thanks! I got an unbelievable deal on it!
awesome design! love mine work Europe / west coast / south america from NY with mine using 4 elevated radials and a 20 foot carbon fiber wonderpole.
Thanks! How elevated do you keep the radials? I need to revisit this antenna.

Bargain Basement Ham Radio btw the twitter post is from 5/26
You'd better measure the SWR closer to the antenna or add cable losses to correct the read value. 73's, OT5Q
What I saw was 30 had a swr of 3 and so did 40 I thought I saw the radio said the meter was set to swr. Back to the drawing board.73 from ki0ad😅
Good test!
Thanks!

Adjust the length of the wire- shorten or lengthen. Also, use at least 14 gauge wire. Larger wire has more bandwidth.
I think the instructions mention to adjust coil spread and compress for 40 and watch swr

Thanks! I like some guitar!
Where do you guys get them long poles?
Amazon...here is an example, but just search for XX meter fishing pole...etc. amzn.to/3x6PF9Z
