  • I bring this home made random wire antenna outdoors and set it up in the garden during the typical windy autumn day here in Slovakia. Let's try this antenna with a small QRP rig Xiegu X5105. The wind noise was amazing this day - it's a relax for me 😁👍
    I recorded 2 QSOs with 4Z1KD/P and OM7CF.

    Great project. I was licensed over 25 years ago and wanted to build a random wire then, but no one did them then and information was hard to come by before the internet. I stepped away from the hobby after five years in it, but am getting back in and am going to put up one when I get a rig. My how times change! Random wires are all the rage now. I knew you would do a lot better with the counterpoise. I wish I could do QRP but it would be no good at my home. I am in a narrow deep valley, and while I have room for a wire over 100 meters long, its all in the valley and under dense hardwood trees. Power is a must and even then it isn't easy. By the way Slovakia looks beautiful and I also love chickens and had some pet ones as a teen age boy. 73 N8PEF

      Thank you for the nice comment Will :-) I like all kind animals and flora. Generally I feel in the nature like home. I like that birds singing and wind sound in the trees. That is so good relax, especially when I have my small radio in the bag and I can set the antenna and runing QRP contacts. I enjoy it more then QRV at home :-) The 9:1UnUn and random wire antenna is very easy to made. I am working now on very small QRP version which you can see on my latest videos. @@OM0ET Dear Friend: I enjoyed your videos. When you made your UnUn, is very easy to take a 1 to 4 derivation and a switch to select 1 to 4 or 1 to 9. This trick allow to tune a better SWR in the low bands. To use with less than 10 watts, you can use any sort of core; even e piece of broken AM radio ferrite with 10 trifilar turns in series.
      PS: If you laid the counterpoise wire oposed to the antenna, you magnify the dipolar moment -an the capture area- and obtain perhaps 3 dB more signal (About 1/2 S).
      Thanks for sharing your instructive experiments. LU1AR

    Paul, in a previous video you made allowance for at least two ferrite chokes on the coax to your radio. I notice in this video that you do not use them. Did they prove unnecessary or did the coiled coax near your transceiver act as an RF choke? Thanks for the field test video. MikeinMinnesota N0WDM

    • @OM0ET
      @OM0ET  5 років тому +2

      Hello Mike. If I use good counterpoise wire I obviously use a ferrite chokes, but if I don't have a counterpoise I use coax feedline like a counterpoise. Then I don't use ferrites. In this video I use a counterpoise but I also didn't used ferrites. Hmm I really don't know why 🤔 maybe I didn't noticed that 😄 73 Paul

      @@OM0ET Tak tak... :) Antény jsou skvělý, koncept super, ale mám ji v bytě, takže mám v podstatě příjem jen směr okno. Vše podél baráku je logicky hluché. Moc bytů, moc kabelů, prostě odstíněno. Navíc si sousedé koupili lednici, která mi jednou za půl hodiny totálně zaruší 40M pásmo harmonickým. Prostě nějaký šmejd, ale nechci se kvůli tomu dávat do sporu.
      Nejlépe mi zatím fungovalo balun 9:1 a drát na strom z okna, to je jedna stanice vedle druhé, i přes den. Ale to víš, z paneláku to není zrovna nenápadný design, takže zatím nadále používám loop tvého konceptu :) btw, zatím stále jen RX na SDR a Upconverter. 73 Paľo

      btw, hodně mě překvapil přijímač TECSUN PL-330. I v bytě mám celkem kvalitní poslech KV, jen s teleskopem, který má na sobě. Pokud s Tecsunem vylezu někam na pole, tak je to doslova jedna silná stanice vedle druhý, jen na ten základní teleskop. Vůbec nechápu, jak se jim to podařilo takhle navrhnout, když anténa nemusí mít dvacet metrů. Stejně tak skvěle fungují střední i dlouhé vlny. Tam například s UpConvertorem nemám prakticky šanci, kdežto s Tecsunem i z bytu na dlouhé vlny přijímám radio majáky z opravdu velkých vzdáleností. Prostě jen tak, na gauči... :)

      Yes of course you can use it for all HF bands as a receiving antenna. This is much better than any dipole, because the random wire antenna is non-resonant antenna what means that you will receive signals on all HF frequencies with no attenuation out of resonant frequency like is normally on the dipoles. Nice but im skeptical of quality of the ground even with qrp rigs. A six feet deep copper rod and a secure connection is my minimal ground.

      I tried this antenna and it was better with NO ground and no counterpoise.

    Why is so much effort to suspend the balun off the ground like that but the antenna is laying on the ground?

    Ground wire is not optional in this setup, because your earth ground is really BAD. Antenna is too low too.

      It's not a base setup as you can see. When you run SOTA you will not have any more options, high or good ground. It's true what you say but it's just a theory. More important is portability and the final results - QRP contacts and that I had... 😉 73

      Mine works much better with no counterpoise and no ground.
