What a shout-out this is...thanks, you're the best! 😳 A Christmas present! That was almost too much. It's not like I'm the only one commenting on almost everything. I see quite a few people here on pretty much every video. Plus, I never made an official song recommendation, so this one surprised me. Sprinkle references in the comments, instead. Put a big stupid smile on my face, anyway. 😁 I'm sort of cheating, because I'm not nearly caught up. Just saw this in the latest videos and had to check it out. After all, I did always first watch the videos of stuff I know.
Makes me almost feel bad that I was taking a bit of a break, recently. Truth be told, I have enough new good music to listen to, thanks to this channel. Not only did I rekindle the flame for The Cure and caught up on the early days of Genesis and Yes, two bands that I thought I didn't like, but used to be really good, it turns out. I was also introduced to King Crimson, which has a couple albums that I love (Red!) and several I don't seem to care for (yet). Then there was Renaissance, Camel and Audience. Also got into David Sylvian. His last two albums with Japan are on heavy rotation.
Regarding the song: Didn't listen to it in quite some time and to be honest, I thought that was not the original version, because it felt like some notes are missing and I remembered the vocals differently. But it is the album version, just checked it. Love the instrumental part, the atmosphere created, the vocal tone and - in contrast to Justin - the slightly abrupt ending. I don't like the reverb on the vocals, though. This is the same album that Just Like Heaven is on. Possibly the most popular song by this band. The entire album is great. My secret favorite is How Beautiful You Are, as I mentioned several times before.

Brax Brax Brax Brax... chanting Brax. Great choice Brax.
I like the long chill feeling of this.
Not all songs have the typical as you said intro verse chorus yadda yadda. Roy Orbison did not adhere to the pop song formula, he would just build to a heavenly climax. Now maybe it didn’t climax but it still delivers. I like to zen chill out to a droning piece sometimes. Sometimes you just gotta Brax out.

Damn. I just composed a major response, and then hit a wrong keystroke.
Lesson learned, use docs to compose replies, then copy and paste. You would think I had learned that lesson a LONG time ago.
Fantastic song! Makes me realize I missed out by not paying more attention to The Cure before now. I knew them "somewhat", and I liked what I knew, but obviously there is a lot more to love!
Yes, sometimes, it IS about the album. The previous and the following song.
You are just amazing!!!! Can I please adopt you?
Yes, "moth to a flame"!!! Excellent!!!
Like a siren? You mean "sirens"??? As in The Sirens"?? Oh, yeah!!
And YES, no Chorus, No Bridge, just stream-of-consciousness verses. Genius!!! (Both in the song composition and in your observations of it!!)

It was strange when you mentioned this was the last track on side A of the album. To me, this album signifies the increased time budget of the latter half of the 80s, where bands realized that CDs offered not just 40-or-so minutes for an album, but more like 70 minutes. So in my mind, this is a CD-based album... without sides and all tracks running one after the other without interruption. I never even considered the break up of the running order to cater to vinyl's limitations!
After your Gentle Giant complete album playthrough is done, you really need to listen to the whole of "Disintegration".
Only two albums have left me thoroughly emotionally drained (in the good way) after complete playthroughs. The first is "Closer" by Joy Division, the other is The Cure's "Disintegration". There are some seriously deep, crushing moments where you can truly feel the pain that Robert's conveying, especially in the second half. You seriously need to experience "Disintegration" and feel those dark depths it isn't afraid to explore.
Oh, and also... I don't think there's any other album of theirs that shows off that "No vocals until several minutes of music has elapsed" thing more prominently.

I didn't recall hearing this song but I must have, it just didn't leave an imprint on my brain. I like the sitar sound as well, it will always be the sound of the '60s and psychedelia.

You listened to the Specials’ Ghost Town recently. Their lead singer, Terry Hall , recorded with a musician from a band called Fundamental, Mustaq. It’s called
    The Hour of Two Lights.
    Loads of real street
mUsicians make it a worthwhile listen.
Terry’s solo LPs are pop classics of their time. The Colourfield’s Virgins and Philistines is a classic but for culture bending invention try Terry&Mustaq! If you’ve heard it it needs further exposure for others to enjoy it.
The Cure unfortunately leave me cold. I did listen though. I saw highlights from Glastonbury this year on tv and finally saw rog elements to them . However i always considered them goth new wave and have trouble adjusting my preconceptions / about them. Maybe one day I’ll dig it!

Adjustment Bureau states: ‘The Cure’s singles did not leave me cold. I recall initially loving a forest ,lovecats and friday..which may have been overplayed in my head and on bland commercial local radio, thus adding to my cynicism.
      I’m Lazy.
Or possibly unsure of Robert Smith. Is it his persona, image and/or voice that prevents me from listening properly to them? In which case, what does one do? I’m probably missing out on a classic album or two.
      Suggestions?

    • @Brax1982

@@HippoYnYGlaw The Cure is not prog, but they include jams in many of their songs. They at least have a strong rock edge in many albums. Like this one, Kiss Me x3. Or Disintegration. Probably all of the post 2000 albums. Bloodflowers, definitely. Try them in that order, I'd say. But I can understand that Robert Smith can put you off. In that case you probably better skip How Beautiful You Are from this album...and Why Can't I Be You.

If I hear a new group I try to give them at least 2-3 songs if I'm not into them to see if I feel better towards them because either by an interest growing in their other work or acclimation to them I find I come to like them or some of a band's stuff.. If it's a genuine gut "no way", then I'll not bother or only if just by rare occasion... And groups or artists that I like/love.... sometimes they put out albums or are in different style bands that I can't like at-all or at-first. Those I really try to give a few listenings because of some "trust" placed in their talent even if it does turn out that project or song or album just is not going to something I can come to enjoy. The first two that come to mind of the last line is some of Mike Patton's work (I cannot stand Dead Cross no matter how much i can appreciate all the skill of the band members together) and some of Bjork's I've had to return to some albums until the first impression fades and I can absorb the work.

rosenfield10 Hey, Rosen, maybe you can help me solve an old mystery. In the late 80's/early 90's, I was listening to the radio and heard a song that I really liked. It was in the middle of a group of at least a dozen songs. At the end of the playlist the DJ announced the songs and I tried to line up which track matched which. The one I really liked I thought matched up with The Cure, I didn't have anything to write with so I tried to remember the name of the track; I couldn't. I figured that I’d hear it again but never did. I've been trying to find that song ever since.
The radio station was mostly classic rock that would mix in crossovers and newer songs. Did The Cure make any crossover songs? The one I remember was up-tempo and had really good singing. I want to say that it was in the style of U2 and the singing was like the song New Year's Day.
I've listened to dozens of Cure songs and haven't found it. Based on what I’ve heard, I would say it's definitely later their later catalogue and doesn't really fit a "typical" Cure song. I'm pretty sure the singer was Robert Smith because of the timbre of the voice. The singing was a little more in control than what I usually hear from RS. This is based on a 30-year old memory that's fades a little more each day.
      Thanks for any help!

@@jaybird4093 I think Rosen might have found it with Burn. That could be it. Since it was for the movie, it could have been played on the radio.
Which part of the U2 song does remind you of it? If you can say. Listening to New Year's Day, it could be several songs that I can't sort out, right now. Edge of the Deep Green Sea? Justin has done this one. Probably what you would think of as "not a typical Cure song". But I guess you would have checked that, already. Or maybe it's from Disintegration. Fascination Street? Not exactly up-beat.
You said it's up-tempo and from their later material, so even though guitars are similar to what you describe I doubt it's A Strange Day and I only bring it up, because that's a fantastic song that everyone should listen to, anyway.
Robert Smith has done a lot of collaborations with bands like Siouxsee and the Banshee or their project The Glove. Could be one of those. But on the latter he is quite shrill.
Then there's a chance that it wasn't Robert Smith. A band that sounds a lot like U2 is The Sound. Coincidentally, I got into them recently. I don't think the singer can be easily mistaken for Smith, though.
