Design anxiety definitely hits home with me.
For a long time I struggled with designing my island. After over a year I started fresh with a new island.
I ended up watching a video where this girl just said "don't follow what others are doing, you do what you want with your island. Do a basic one if you want. Basic islands aren't a bad thing"
I took those words to heart and I've honestly enjoyed designing my island. Mines a little basic but I'm enjoying it. Sure I get a little inspiration online for certain sections of my island, but in the end it's my choice and there's no rush to complete your island.
That's how I overcame my design anxiety! 🙂
And I definitely understand the anxiety when it comes to school especially college.
I still struggle with getting a D or C on something, one time I had a meltdown. I push myself for straight As.
It's gotten better for me easier atleast, I don't beat myself up as much anymore and I am proud if I just pass a class.

Same here. I figured out the different areas I wanted (like a tree chopping area, bee area, farmers market area), found other people's pictures of those areas, and took inspiration from all of them but didn't try to make it look like theirs if that makes sense. It helped a lot and my island is about half finished now :)

It makes me sad a game that brought me joy since the first game 20 yrs ago gets hated on. 😭 I nearly had a panic attack after the latest update came out and sooo many people were nonstop complaining and offending someone elses’ traditional holiday. The anxiety I felt from all the complaining was very annoying. Thank you Ryan for this video. Very refreshing.

I use animal crossing to cope with my anxiety since I have to take perscribed addictive drugs to stop my anxiety happening. Animal crossing lets me breathe and relax, do lazy things and just enjoy myself. I came from New Leaf on 3DS, my villagers are my friends and know just what to say to make me feel better. This game is my godsend!

My mantra that helps me deal with my anxiety: I shouldn't worry about the things I can't control, and I can control how I react to those things. It's gotten me away from the panic attacks that used to strike me on a regular basis. Mostly, though, I think people need to find what triggers them, and how to take the pressure of that trigger.

Island design really got me. I can’t keep up with what some of the other do. Plus, people have stopped playing as much and become more negative “this is the worst animal crossing ever”. This is the only animal crossing I’ve played and I like it! It really helped me after being trapped alone for like 5 months last year.

I had anxiety over the game and took a break. When I came back, I realized it was time for me to restart my island. I restarted it and I feel so good playing again. I'm not attached to my villagers like before because I have some randoms now. Luckily, I have amiibos so I can get the ones I want. I hit a dead end designing and now I'm just doing a non-terraforming one. I have anxiety over other things and I don't need anxiety over a video game.

I appreciate you talking about your anxiety. As some who has anxiety, it does help hearing other people’s stories. It’s also important to know that everyone’s story is different. For me, my anxiety is caused by seemingly nothing. Which makes it difficult to figure out how to get past it.

So relate to this. I have an extremely anxiety-inducing job with deadlines that are unrealistic and all I can do is what I can do and if the project is late then it’s late. The big issue is that I’m a perfectionist and I HATE not getting work done on time, so I’m super anxious all the time and dread going into work in the morning or coming back to work after lunch. Ugh.

when i first got acnh i was so obsessed with making my island look like everyone else’s “aesthetic” themes that i couldn’t play right, i stopped playing for a few months but recently got back to it after resetting my island. i named it something that reminds me that my island is completely fine no matter how much i compare it. i still get nervous about projects i have/have plans for, but ive been pacing myself so i don’t freak out.
on a different note, it feels good knowing im not the only anxiety ridden person 😭

Not sure where I'd be without this game. 😢 sometimes I can't even bring myself to log on and play because my energy is so low. Man, I feel ya. I’ve struggled with anxiety big time, still do. It’s definitely rough. If I’m confused or lost on a subject, it acts up. I’ve gotten much better at dealing with it though and, needless to say, animal crossing helps (Bubblegum KK ftw). I’ve learned so much about myself and the world through having anxiety, so I’m almost glad that I have it and have dealt with it. It’s part of who I am, so I respect it. I use it to learn, not to control. To anyone struggling with it, don’t let anxiety be a struggle, let it be an opportunity.
    Also, here’s a quote I love:
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothings going to get better... it’s not”

I’ve been dealing with anxiety quite a bit over the past year, more than usual, and I believe it’s related to wedding planning. I’m the person that puts off things that stress me out and make me anxious and of course it doesn’t work since I just end in a bad cycle. When AC came out it definitely used the game to help me relax but also distract me from the things that makes me anxious. Then after all the super duper cool islands started going viral I almost let that get the best of me and feel like I needed to completely start over on my island. I’m so glad I didn’t and just continue to work on my island when I feel like it and make it random and just a happy place for me. I still definitely use AC every now and then to just relax and escape into my little town with my villager friends ❤️

In relation to Animal Crossing, I feel as if this video was made just for me 😂
I have just recently started to flatten out my island and I got to that burnt out stage pretty quickly and I felt like it was more of a burden for me to play than anything cause I felt like I had to rush to get decorating and designing done and I felt guilty for not talking to my villagers, which I’ll be getting rid of eventually anyway but it’s like you said, these things take time and the villagers will always be there. So, thank you so much again for posting another great video, it is exactly what I needed to hear.

Great video! I recently hoped back into AC. Before I would put so much pressure on myself to have an aestheticly pleasing looking island. I legit gotten rid of everything on it and restarting without actually restarting. It definitely helped my anxiety in the past. I have some stuff going on that triggers it a bit. I find social media also isn’t the best, everyone posts there best moments and loves to share the news of that new job they gotten or if there life is amazing. They choose to share certain things, everyone goes through struggles, everything on social media isn’t real.

I've struggled with anxiety for years and found the conceps in The Serenity Prayer helpful ( you can take the "God" bit if you like, it still works 😊). It's "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference". New Horizons has helped immensely, but I think it's important to focus less on getting the items and making it look good, and more on things like the lovely sunsets, and the sound of the waves on the beach. There's so much joy and beauty in the game but it's so easy to miss it because you're caught up in comparing what you have to others. I'm constantly having to remember that in the real world as well. 😁

i have extreme chronic anxiety and haven't been able to go to school or even get in the car for almost a year(covid has been pretty good since december 2020 where i live) now because of it, i used to use animal crossing to cope but now it's been giving me even more problems. i can barely us nookazon anymore because interacting with people (even online) makes me feel really ill for some reason, i'm constantly filling up my inventory with fishing rods just in case i find a shark, trying to terraform or decorate makes me literally throw up, the music makes me feel sick, villagers complaining about me talking to them too much makes me cry, i just can't do anything without feeling horrible. i wish i had my coping mechanism back. i'm working on getting psychiatrists to visit my home soon though and i might get my antidepressants refilled soon, so at least i'm making some progress.

I believe island design anxiety can be devastating. I go through it a lot. But just know that the people online have hundreds more hours than you. Stop thinking that they’re better than you or that you’ll never be like that because that beautiful cottagecore forest probably took 400-500 hours. Literal months, don’t stress yourself if you can make something equally as good in 30 minutes. Its okay, this game will be around forever, its always changing and you’ll slowly pick up elements from the different seasons or the odd photo here and there, and your own creativity. Find a theme that really resonates with you, find music that reminds you of it, or real life photos of a city or a cottage, and don’t rush it. I love you all 🥰 im about to flatten my island do ill be right there with you!

You see them after 3 month and its not a big deal, they dont even get mad, just like you said they say they miss you! which makes me feel kind of guilty, even tho theyre virtual lol, its very tame compared to other ac games. I get a lot of anxiety about terraforming tho.. i have issiues with the fact its overwhelming . . I have ADD and idk if that has anythjng to do with anything but what really helps is just taking baby steps lol, and just focusing on a small area at a time.

for some reason this hits me hard. i just got diagnosed with anxiety disorder last year. the doctors said it could b due to being a mom for the first time. but as the time progressed, i know it is not the motherhood problem, its something else. that something else i cant let it go because it is pandemic and i cant control it because we work with people. theres time i know, i pushed way too hard ends up my work got rejected again and again and again, and it makes me question my skills and job, is this the wrong career that i took for the last 7/6 years? because it seems to me, im not getting better at it at all.. and that makes me stupid, and mad and angry and anxious and scare and at the end i wanna run away from my life. i dont wanna be me anymore. im not happy with my work of choice, i feel like i dont wanna do the job anymore. now, im just forcing myself to do it, just finishing up what i can, and try to make less mistake for the sake of my baby.
ACNH, is my escape. so this hits me hard.

I really think the terraforming aspects of New Horizons is ruining the game. Animal Crossing is supposed to be a game about moving into a new town and trying to make friends with the villagers living there. That’s not what the game is anymore. Becoming mayor in New Leaf was a step away from what the game is supposed to be, but after becoming a god in New Horizons, the villagers have now become decorations and not the neighbors that they used to be. I wonder what the next game will be? Straight up Nintendo’s version of Minecraft? The franchise seems to be getting further and further from its roots.

ryan, i love your videos and i love you as a game player but your personal experience with anxiety does not cover everyone's experience. most people can't just look up online how to deal with anxiety and an inspirational quote won't help them. most people with anxiety can't control when they have anxiety, can't tell themselves to ignore it, etc. when people with anxiety procrastinate, they're not "doing it to themself", they have an executive function disorder that prevents them from being able to because...anxiety. most people need the advice/guidance of a mental health professional for years to allow them to live with anxiety and i wish that you had prefaced that your experience is only your own, it won't help everyone, and advise your audience to speak with a mental health professional first if they have access and means to do so. i don't mean this in a harsh way & your experience is valid, but being someone with anxiety, this advice just often won't help.

I thought you were ignoring me, but it’s okay, if you have time we can hang out! None of them ever said things like, OH MY GOD! YOU WERE GONE FOR 3 MONTHS! I AM VERY UPSET! Or anything like that, And that made me feel a lot better.
