I was really anticipating this match, and they did not disappoint me, they told a great story👌🏿. Moreover, MJF went over, which is exactly what I wanted😁. That said, for Punk to be able to go this long, after not wrestling for 7 years, is impressive. Suffice it to say, he is back in wrestling shape👍🏿
The way I described this match is that this is how I hope wrestling moves towards. This match was great because it told a very good story where you had Punk at the start not exactly taking MJF seriously. He plays with MJF (the Terry Funk spot), hung on the ropes with a bit of arrogance, etc. where he makes the first mistake by hitting the corner post with his shoulder. Punk gets wily in this match, using his cheap tactics to pull one over any chance he has. Gradually, Punk has to fight fire with fire such as doing the biting spot. But he's selling really well all the way through, first the arm/shoulder then later the knee. The big build is towards Punk's Pepsi Plunge which he hasn't pulled out in years. It's a desperation spot that he's forced to pull from his bag of tricks as a last ditch effort to put away the kid. But MJF had been working over the leg the entire match so Punk can't cover. Then Wardlow coming out we get the big question. Will he sell MJF out or continue to be on his payroll? This match was excellent in having all the elements I could ask for in a good wrestling match. You had two wrestlers people actually cared about with a clear issue that they're trying to settle, a fair amount of time, very deep wrestling psychology, good selling, a very good pace where the moves are built up and are meaningful, the drama both as a result of the selling and desperation moves and MJF goes over Punk twice (to a degree) in Punk's hometown. This match was what Jericho could not really do when it was his turn. Right now in my mind, MJF is the most versatile of the 4 Pillars and probably the best of them just because he's far more well rounded. And this match really put him on the next level. At the same time, because of the amount of cheating that MJF required, the issue is far from over. It left me wanting more from these two because they didn't do everything in a single match. There's more that I'm sure both can pull out just because the psychology and story telling in their matches are pretty deep. Also, MJF is the perfect opponent for Punk now that we've seen them work. Not only can he match up with Punk, he has the respect for good wrestling and can wrestle Punk's style. And I have to agree with Brian and Jim where it's frustrating watching AEW just because you get a Brandi segment and never want to watch AEW again. Then you have Bryan Danielson come out with a compelling promo and you get an excellent match like this. I like Jim's analogy of the movie production. Probably, a concrete example would be if for the last Avengers movie, if the entire cast had written their own parts and tossed it to an intern to make sense of it all, it would've been just a cluster because of all the egos with that many big stars. One thing i will say is if Punk decides to finish his career in AEW, he ought to become a producer at some point where he's the one directing traffic. When Bryan Danielson mentioned that he (and Moxley) could be controlling AEW, I think that is actually a great idea. Get Bryan and Punk to reign in the control a bit because they have the best segments.
I agree but do you think this style appeals to modern fans? I thought they'd have more viewers than they did. Doesn't mean it wasn't a great match. Something just seems off with the ratings and what's shown.
It's the modern hardcore fan who wants these overly spot heavy, flippy matches. And they make up a very small group. Nothing compared to the massive audience that used to watch wrestling. That tells me that the majority prefer wrestling done right and they won't come back because wrestling wants to cater to the minority. This isn't just a wrestling thing either as lots of things nowadays cater to a particular niche audience. Maybe it's just the battle for ppls attention and company's want to bank on the sure thing instead of taking a few chances to get a larger audience. But like i said, they'll never grow that way.
@Giraffe Toe: This might sound silly, but i like the fact they didn’t do the usual 100 near-falls/false finish bs that always seems to happen in big matches.
Give MJF the World Title. He’s the most compelling performer on the roster. He’d be great doing mainstream press. Dude is a superstar and far superior to Adam Page or Adam Cole.
MJF does not need any title to make his career, the title needs MJF so it can finally have prestige and meaning. All the past champions have not done anything for the title IMO!
Honestly the ONLY issue with this match was that it was only announced last week and the way they promoted it.... it was like "next week nyla v Ruby, punk v mjf aswell as pac and penta v knights of black throne" like... for real? It felt like a random match whereas it should have felt like a blockbuster! I'm sure the rematch will be announced for the PPV next week and will be built to but god dam, if you wanted to really bring in new viewers this was the match to do it. The match itself however was absolutely fantastic, as soon as it restarted punk went for a quick roll up, I loved the Wardlow interaction I really thought it was done well and subverted expectations in a match that had already done that and would again even after Wardloe came out. 5* match with 2* promotion (not AEW the promotion, just how it was actually promoted)
@@KC-vx5wo given that Punk effectively just lost twice and in Chicago I'd have to say him, but God dam would he be putting MJF over bigtime if he won again

@@Raddon I knew fine well this match would be special. I think most people knew that much, the problem was that after the long build up (and even going as far as saying they were done with each other a few weeks ago) the match was just kind of on... if your a casual fan and just happened to miss last week's episode the match just kind of appeared out of nowhere and the actual promotion for it was virtually non existent, not even being mentioned last whenever they talked about what was on the following week. I was actually convinced the match WOULDNT happen after they announced it due to the way they announced it. I figured punk would get attacked or something during his entrance and the match would be postponed as a result
Chris Jericho has and will put people over come on. Not fair to disrespect a legend. He even stood up against Ryback what he did to punk and stood up against Lesnar when he went out on cena and ortan
@@tied78 I love Jericho and I'm not disrespecting one of my all time favorites whatsoever. But his year long feud with MJF was a complete waste of time. Jericho would lose a match, then complain in a promo, get a rematch, then lose again - but he still made sure to get his win back on the final match so it seemed as if he won the feud. CM Punk at least gave MJF a great match and letting him beat Punk in his hometown was the extra touch.

30 years ago wrestling was amazing though. Midnight express vs TA and Mr Wrestling 2 was a creative, violent and fast paced match. Arn Anderson matches were great. Hard hitting and logical. Tully as fast and slimy and a heat machine. Machoman in Memphis was off the charts. Pile driving Ricky Morton on a table (in 1984) was bananas. As cool as ECW was at times It did kinda ruin things withe the hugging your enemy after the match and the catch as catch can stalemates with audience applause. Cool 1nce or twice but overdone and IMO let to the pretentious in the know fan to an annoying degree

The tape was also CM Punk before when he was a heel on the indies. The Yankee tights were another throwback. Also the people saw the ring. Read the lips of those who saw it up close. They were screaming "THE RING!" & pointing. It was the front rows only but info quickly spread. I thought the show was great except for Ruby Soho match.
I was kind of alright with Mox vs Yuta as an appetiser. The Bryan promo got me real interested. I wanted to just go during the Brandi/Lambert segment. The Black/Pac thing was fine, but wasn't what it could be. The Soho/Rose thing left me confounded and by that point I was hoping Punk/MJF would make it all worth it. And it almost did. Mox, Bryan, Punk and MJF were all that I enjoyed. Everything else was meh or just garbage.
Imagine the bragging from MJF on Dynamite on Wednesday. Hopefully he draws a shit tonne of heat from reminding the fans he beat Punk not once but twice in a night. Interested to see how Punk reacts as well.

Mr. Jim Cornette you are a pro wrestling Genius! Although I disagree to a certain extent when it comes to Brandi Rhodes, respectfully, she is FLAMING HOT, truly eye candy & honestly I respect her psychology, she got passion for the business.
CM Punk did what Chris Jericho should have done at All Out. This was the perfect way for Punk to take his first loss, MJF gets a huge win, and nobody thinks any less of Punk considering he’s still one of the best old school wrestlers on the roster. A+
Punk harking back to his match with The Rock, where the match was restarted and then the Rock won the title, which pissed Punk off for not putting him over. So Punk put it right v MJF. Think Jim's criticisms are nit picking.
That's who Jim is. He is a picker of nits because when you are a pro.. You want it to be as good as possible. Just take away the general mood that he liked it. I'm sure punk and mjf look at their stuff and ask themselves, "How could of it been better?" It's what people who give a shit do.
I have watched aew from the beginning and when it first aired I knew MJF would be one of the biggest stars and has been one of the main reasons I started caring about wrestling again after 20 years. MJF is truly the next big thing since Ric Flair and that is the truth.

This was not for me, And Jim buried Cody and Sammy for fighting in the crowd, but didn't bury it here, and they fought in the crowd for a while they could've been counted out, but there was no count (which Jim would've buried if it was done by a guy he doesn't like), And there were times when the referee was looking away with the intent of not seeing what's happening behind his back, (which is why they need managers to distract the referee), And if MJF would've been handed the win that first time, that would've been mega heat, And if Jim doesn't like a person, he goes out of his way to bury what they do e.g he hates it when Omega does his finger pointing, but barely mentions it when Finn Balor does it....

That said, for Punk to be able to go this long, after not wrestling for 7 years, is impressive. Suffice it to say, he is back in wrestling shape👍🏿
Good match, and I cannot wait for the rematch. Maybe at the PPV
@@mrembustero00 We shall see
The way I described this match is that this is how I hope wrestling moves towards.
Today's fans seem to want flippy stuff, dives through the ropes etc as opposed to matches like Hook's who actually wrestles inside the ring.
Can't wait to here if my 4.9 star rating for the Ricky vs Lethal match is in agreement with the Big King Corn!
Listening to Jim recap this match (and all of the other matches) reminds me of the late great John Madden breaking down plays during live games.
I like the comparison
True that !
Give MJF the World Title. He’s the most compelling performer on the roster. He’d be great doing mainstream press. Dude is a superstar and far superior to Adam Page or Adam Cole.
Hangfire Page and Greasy Adam Coal!!
MJF will get the title eventually, it's all about the journey and not the destination. Enjoy the ride, because its going to be a good one
MJF does not need any title to make his career, the title needs MJF so it can finally have prestige and meaning.
All the past champions have not done anything for the title IMO!

I have a good feeling that Punk called a lot of this match before the match.
If they have the rematch at the PPV who do you think should win?
@@KC-vx5wo given that Punk effectively just lost twice and in Chicago I'd have to say him, but God dam would he be putting MJF over bigtime if he won again
If after all the build up you didnt know this match was special then you didnt pay attention but I agree they should have made sure that people that dont pay attention knew this would be special.
@@LastPancake AEW has this issue of how they promote/build up shows with casual viewers

Chris Jericho has and will put people over come on. Not fair to disrespect a legend.
He even stood up against Ryback what he did to punk and stood up against Lesnar when he went out on cena and ortan
Wait for the ppv. I bet u punks gonna get his win back
@@tied78 I love Jericho and I'm not disrespecting one of my all time favorites whatsoever.

Corny is a genius that suffers from what most geniuses eventually suffer from - what worked 30-40 years ago should still work today. Brian always finds something to complain about. You can bring out the worlds best steak and he’ll complain about the green beans.
I mean, it worked pretty fucking well. Loved the match, and I'm a guy that got into wrestling because of Pac's flippy shit.
Brian is just there to be the smark and SJW of the program lol
Punk, MJF, Danielson, and Darby alll feel like such big deals. I love it
Punk legitimately did everything possible to give MJF the rub I do agree the format hurts the set ups some times the body slam pops is crazy, the selling was top notch, MJF should be champion by the summer, also agree Punk MJF Bryan Hook Adam Cole Darby Sammy FTR and Moxley should go to Tony be like wtf are you doing to us this show is legitimately a roller coaster it’s sometimes the best show I’m wrestling then becomes the worse thing you’ve ever seen
Do you think AEW's core fanbase prefers the flips and more choreographed acrobatics to traditional wrestling? I thought this match was great and should have over a million viewers. Something seems off.
@@KC-vx5wo I didn’t watch it live either didn’t have time so idk why it was the lowest in the couple months but the first hour was horrendous so who knows if they don’t like that match then it’s on them and they’ll never grow
It was a fantastic match and breezed through like it was 5 minutes.
I actually wanted that tape choke to remain the finish. Much more heat going forward, an out for Punk to lose, and much more necessity for the rematch.
All of that was still accomplished, but I liked the tape screwjob.
The tape was good, but having it get reversed and MJF still winning dirty was a great swerve.
@@peterflagle5446 This. It was a roller coaster. It's going the way I expect - it's going the way I dread - it's going the way I expected - it's going the way I'll hate. The match was good and brings them to the next phase of this feud, maybe No DQ or a cage match at the PPV
Haven’t seen anyone else mention it, but I wonder if the tape/sleeper spot was a tribute to Jimmy Rave, who just passed recently. Punk and Rave did the same thing at the ROH Anniversary Show in 05, and I always loved that spot.
Jim's right ; when there's a good wrestling good you don't get bored but instead stay hooked throughout the whole thing like a good movie. Also, it helps that these two are stars.

The right man went over. Props to punk.
Glad Cornette mentioned the ref. Everyone in the comment section on YT for AEW's upload of the match was praising the tape spot, but the ref's hollywood reactions completely killed the spot for me.
I'm surprised Cornette doesn't mention how corny (no pun intended) the ref is not only on that spot but during this whole match and every match he officiates. He is ridiculous!

Is it cringe at moments, countless. But it's still bringing entertainment straight to my home that I can enjoy and even my son has gotten j to it. Looking forward to it improving as time goes
The tape was also CM Punk before when he was a heel on the indies. The Yankee tights were another throwback. Also the people saw the ring. Read the lips of those who saw it up close.
