I ran the 8KX for years until recently. I tried upgrading to the Crystal, but it was too buggy and unstable, so I went back to the 8KX. Now I've moved to the Bigscreen Beyond which has been rock stable. But I still miss that wide FOV of the 8KX. And frankly, the 8KX still holds its own against modern headsets which are 5 years newer. The Beyond, Crystal, or Quest 3 are in many ways a lateral move from the 8KX, and whether these newer headsets are overall better is a judgement call.
Of note is that the 8KX has been out long enough to be mature and relatively stable despite being a Pimax product. I'm sure there will be commenters that say otherwise, but they probably didn't run one recently or with Pimax's newer software.
I wish Pimax wouldn't have targeted the 12K as such a grandiose upgrade over the 8KX. A modernized 8KX with just modern lenses and QLED panels would be a killer product and could have been actually out on the market by now. But Pimax is always going after more than it can chew.

I've always wanted full FOV and can't wait for that day. I don't care if the 12k is the size of a shoebox, as long as it is as clear as the Crystal with full fov

it's the FOV for me, when you fly out of grand canyon airport and dive over the rim of the grand canyon you'll see, you'll feel the earth drop away. Waiting for the Pimax 12K

Love my 8Kx ... have tried a crystal and was blown away with how sharp it was but in sim racing and you have this running well it's just so good... I'll let some of that sharpness go for such a realistic experience ... it's still a amazing headset and will stay my daily driver till pimax release a replacement ... thanks for the reviews

Still have my 8kx..People underestimate the optimal immersion of having this level of fov.. it's still the hmd with the closest fov to actual real human eye fov so in that aspect it has optimal realistic immersion (wider fov also gives much greater situational awareness and a greater sense of speed).. you can also add extra clarity with reshade sharpening which is a great combo of pretty decent clarity and optimal fov immersion.. still waiting on the 12k qled which will have at least crystal clarity and 8kx fov simultaneously but even pimax thinks a 5090 will be needed minimum to run that.. but hopefully pimax will still honor their trade in offer to put the original purchase price of the 8kx towards paying for the 12k qled

I still have my Pimax5KSuper and it is good for racing. Having that extra window in the game world really makes a big difference and enhances the sense of speed. The image quality isn’t no where near as good as on my Pimax Crystal Light but, that FOV is still amazing. 😉👌

Thanks so much for the retro video Steve! Your work is always amazingly fun and informative. Though I have the 8kx, I bought the Quest 3 and use it exclusively now. (Mostly running Elite Dangerous these days). I've given serious thought to the Beyond; however, I'm still holding out for what the market may bring in the next year.

I recently got a hand-me-down Pimax 8KX and I can't get over this FOV especially for following the merge on a dogfight. For me it's just what I have been looking for coming from trackIR but sadly for me the comfort is not there, my head just isn't shaped correctly for this headset apparently. I really wish that Pimax could make a remastered version of this headset with OLED or QLED panels and better comfort and I would be happy.

I would love to try this. I've been flying with a real helicopter pilot lately and he has pointed out that I fly like I have tunnel vision. And I realize it's in part because I wear a VR headset in the flightsim and that visually amounts to wearing a scuba mask which naturally impedes your peripheral sensitivity. I did my own video about that referring to waiting for a wide FOV VR set, but maybe that already exists in this product.

I bought the 8kx with high hopes and could never get the headset to look right. There was always an issue with the lenses not looking right and being very uncomfortable. I tried for a whole year straight and could not make it work. I still have it and planned to trade it in. The g2, aero, psvr1 and 2, quest1, 2 and 3 and know the crystal never gave me optical issues like the 8kx.

Great channel! I’ve been using a G2 and an RTX3090ti for a few years mainly for IL2 Sturmovik. I want to upgrade to something with a bit more clarity/resolution but it seems to be a minefield out there unless you have a bottomless wallet. The worst headset on the market i found and despite the advertised FOV it had poor focus until you turned the FOV down to 120 degrees where it improved a little. They also will deny that their headsets have issues and dont do what they advertise.
