  • crosstrainingenduro.com Should you get a windscreen for your motorbike? Do you have a windscreen, but you get too much buffeting and wind noise? First? The pros and cons. A good windscreen provides protection against road debris, rain, insects and extreme temperatures. A dual sport windscreen can reduce wind noise dramatically. Welcome to Cross Training Adventure, we are into all things dual sport and adventure on the east coast of Australia. There is less rider fatigue on long trips. Which is the best motorbike windscreen? It can protect your GPS and other electronic gear. How to choose the best windscreen for an adventure bike? You also need to look at the negatives. The wrong windscreen can actually increase wind noise. Buffeting can also be worse. Once dirty they can reduce visibility, especially the tall adventure bike windscreens. Cheap windscreens may also cause visual distortion. In hot weather they can reduce airflow too much. Certain windscreens could be dangerous if you pitch forward and your neck or face make contact. Cheap dual sport windscreens can move and bounce over rough road surfaces. And finally, some riders want that full experience of wind in the face so there is no best dual sport windscreen... otherwise they would just drive a car instead. There are many types of windscreen. We think there are three main categories for adventure riding. The touring windscreen. It's high and wide. It directs the wind away from the rider as much as possible. The standard windscreen is shorter. It is usually high enough to direct airflow away from the body, but it ensures a clean flow of air at the helmet. Others will say it's brilliant. There are simply too many variables involved with rider height, body positioning, type of riding, speed, and so on. Getting an adjustable screen will increase your chances of success. Some windscreen manufacturers also have design features which can help. Some windscreens leave a gap at the bottom. The rally windscreen. A visor added to the top of the windscreen may be enough to direct turbulence away from your helmet. You can also put extensions on the side of the screen. Feeling adventurous? Try making your own. I love the $5 garbage bin windscreen for the DR650. Simply cut the plastic, bend it, screw it on. It doesn't look very sexy, but it works well. Lately I've been experimenting with a slightly different design. These have become popular with some riders because of races such as Dakar. The dual sport windscreens are usually very expensive and mount to the motorbike frame. This reduces the vaccuum pressure that builds up behind the windscreen and can reduce air turbulence. Other windscreens may have holes at the bottom for the same reason. But there can be problems with wind noise and turbulence. Or don't subscribe to our Cross Training Adventure riding channel. The main thing is get out and ride while you can with dual sport riding or Adventure riding in Australia, Canada, Vietnam, Romania and beyond! So check out Cross Training Adventure. For example, a tall windscreen that is too far forward may cause turbulence around the helmet. A standard screen with the wrong height can cause the same problem. If you are buying a windscreen, try to buy one where you can adjust the height and angle. But you should consider wearing ear plugs as well for highway riding. Some windscreens have a curved lip at the top which aims to direct airflow up and over the helmet. If you have a windscreen that isn't working well, another option is to add visors or extensions. A common complaint about windscreens is they can actually be louder and cause more wind turbulence. These are just some of the many factors involved. See our video about noise-induced hearing loss. This is only a brief guide. If you have more tips, let me know and I'll add them to the pinned first comment of the UA-cam video. What are your experiences with windscreens? Love them? Hate them? What issues have you faced? It will often solve problems with wind noise and turbulence. When researching various brands of adventure bike windscreens, some riders will say a particular brand is garbage. How tall is the rider? What is the angle of the helmet? How tall is the adventure bike windscreen? I was aiming for a slightly more 'rally' look but it's actually not a great idea. Protect your hearing! Research shows permanent hearing loss can begin with only 15 minutes of highway riding. A good helmet and windscreen will definitely help. How far forward is the windscreen? What is the angle of the windscreen? The touring windscreen aims to direct wind at the top of the helmet, or completely over it. The standard windscreen aims for a clean flow of air at the helmet, and reduces wind blast against the body.

The gap mentioned at 3:15 is critical. In many cases, a windscreen can be improved by simply offsetting it away from your fairing some so air can travel behind it. The idea is to prevent flow separation which creates the turbulence you feel.

I've put 3 different windscreens on my Ninja 1000. I finally found one that was smaller, but the shape was the biggest factor. It still creates turbulence, but the vortices were directed in a better way. Sometimes you have to look at the forums, and not the reviews because some people are just angry that they spent several hundred dollars on something that's not satisfactory.

one add-on i hadn't thought of before i was rec'd it and tried them is front fork windguards they make to usually put on harleys or other cruisers, but i found they work just as well on adv bikes...attaching a set of fork windguards cuts way down on the wind that comes up from underneath the handlebars and windscreen, etc. so yeah, they don't work for everyone, but can make a world of a difference....

I’m 6’5” and on a 2019 Africa twin. I was finding wind buffeting of my head, and some times body. I also ride off road mainly and was worried I would slap my throat into windscreen.
I decided to cut the oem screen down considerably. Now get no buffeting, good clear view and helps keep temps down in this Queensland heat.

Same hight on a Triumph explorer and had the same problem. I tried a few screens before just giving up and running a short summer fly screen and ear plugs. Wish I didn't waste my time and money on trying different screens when I could have just cut the original screen down.

Same size on a 22 africa twin. I have been trying all sorts of stuff. I ride with the windscreen off which eliminated the buffetting but sooooo loud. Even with earplugs. I have a couple other things to try. If I can't get it figured out, I might sell the bike. My rf 1400 helmet is super quiet when I stand up, even if I am 3 inches off the seat. Hopefully I figure it out soon.

My 701 has a Nomad Adv screen, which transformed the bike from an overweight and over powered trail bike into a genuine all rounder, fairly comfortable on the highway, pretty good on trails, pretty good everywhere, doing pretty well anything. Oh yeah, and the Seat Concepts seat. I need that, too.

Madstad. You should highlight them. I rode through hurricanes twice on two different bikes with a madstad. Wouldn't have survived without it / them. Simply the Best windscreen you can get best design. They don't make them for all bikes but they are work of art.

Another great vid 👍🏼 really appreciate your honesty with your own trials and errors. The motorbike body profile, fairing and fork tunnel design are also significant factors in airflow. Various Africa Twin models are a good example of how different, even subtle designs affect airflow. Riders of the Adventure Sport model and the older CRF1000 model often swear by fork tunnel air dams to reduce buffeting. The same air dams do relatively little on the CRF1100 due to subtle different contours in fairing and body profiles.

I started riding motorcycles when I was 17 and 1954. I was still riding motorcycles and my quotes windscreen is really a debris screen protect me from the trucks drop in Sandersville stones and thorough protect me from tires, picking up debris from the road and throwing it into my face I won’t ride without one full screen.

Bunnings. A piece of acrylic about a metre square? Easy to drill and or bend with a gentle application with a cheap hot air gun. Cut a rough chunk off to fit a WR250R, just kept effing around with height and width, plus "lip", until I had a reasonable compromise for my needs, which was a bit of load off the body, and clear air to the helmet. About $40.....

After debating with myself about putting a windscreen on my DRz. I ended up putting on the type that mounts low to the headlight mask. I wanted wind pressure off my torso, but did not want to add buffeting or to worry about clipping my face on a windscreen. As it turns out the windscreen worked out perfectly, it breaks the wind🤔 nicely, there's no buffeting at all(not that I ride the DRz at high speed) even at 65+mph and its far enough away from me that I'm not worried about clipping it.

I ordered a taller screen recently from GP Kompozit - Still waiting for it.
It claims to be 15cm higher than the stock one, and fits on the adjustable mount of the bike. So it sounds like a win-win to deflect helmet buffeting a bit. Since if I duck down about 20cm the ride is much quieter and relaxed (save for the awkward riding position). So a taller screen should let me sit upright and still have some peace and quiet. Hopefully it's worth the price.

Meh, the few times I've had a windshield, I didn't like it. It always felt like the second you hit the road you'd catch a giant moth right where you spend most of your time looking, and then spend the rest of your rude trying to peer over the top of the screen. I'll just take the bugs to the face and chest, like a proper man, so I can go home and cry to my wife about how bad the Junebugs hurt.

Very hard to say due to all the variables. I certainly think it's a good reason to buy an adjustable one. And there are always those little spoilers you can add to the top in case there's too much noise due to turbulence.
