For a cheap clear screen check out your local industrial plastic supplier (Mulford plastics are in all the Ozzy main centers) they do cheap off-cuts of acrylic - lexan - perspex - you can use that template and a heat gun or even put the acrylic in the oven to make it soft enough to form.
Great observations and tips! I'm only 6' 1" but definitely find that 'magic' triangle too small on my current bike, the DR 350. Unfortunately there are not near as many aftermarket products for this bike, and finding peg lowering options has been frustrating. I'll keep looking!
+Allen Huling the fastway pegs only drop down and back a bit allen but it can still make a bit of difference... unfortunately the DR650 is so bad it needs way more than that, not sure about the 350 though.
start doing the easy parts yourself, and you will break through the fear and learn how easy it is to change most vehicles to improve them. Also recommended: don't resort to throwing lots of money at most things. Adjusting your controls is free and makes a significant difference if setup right vs wrong. Don't have money for an expensive set of bags? Go to goodwill and look for something cheap and rugged that you won't care about messing up. And color matching with spray paint goes a long way toward a bike not looking trashy.
@@andrewstambaugh240 I use Rustoleum white primer on my boxtruck , works great . Sold that DR650 3 months after getting my Tenere 700 in July 2020 . Love that bike but sure would like something lighter . Probably will get a DR650 again but one with the 790 kit and other mods or maybe a KTM 690 that got all the wrinkles worked out .
When I tried to add Rox Risers to my DR, cable length seemed to be an issue. I have not dug into the cable routing to see if I can free up some slack as of yet but seeing the DR in the vid using them tells me I should make a second attempt.
+evo moto it's all in the timing and technique evo.... you don't need much throttle at all once it all comes together ua-cam.com/video/BQeMmKsyjgI/v-deo.html
Curious why you still haven't put on more aggressive knobbies?? I recently switched to 80% dirt 20% street tires now my DR is a completely different beast on the trails. My love for it doubled :) .. Hope you keep making DR vids. Great work!
+Casey Michael Wisden i've been waiting for the GT723 knobbies from goldentyre, casey. apparently these are almost the perfect adventure knobby according to reviews, but they won't be available here for a while so finally slapped on a pair of dunlop D606s for the time being. can't wait to hit the dirt again with some better tyres!
My wife is only about 5'-2" (1.57m) and wants a "mighty DR" BADLY lol. If we do the aforementioned lowering mods, and shave the seat, do you think we'd still need lowering links? She's not a hooligan rider , won't be jumping at ALL if I have anything to say about it (which I don't, of course). Thanks for this brilliant series, I will be sending a few dollars to aid the cause. Appreciate your hard work!
+Peter Jowett i'm sort of the other end of the scale and freakishly tall, peter.... so not too sure. as far as i know it's the lowest of bikes with a decent engine size, you'd only get lower by going to around 200cc or less. i'm sure she would get her feet on the ground at least, and then it would be just judging if the weight isn't too much. if she's an experienced rider already then that wouldn't be a problem! there are lots of threads around too like this one: www.thumpertalk.com/topic/962006-dr650-how-low-can-she-go/
And the aftermarket seats are crazy expensive! Being tall, I just cut some old foam and stapled some back vinyl across the raised widened seat on my latest DR... very comfy but so ugly lol.
+Review Guru if they sell the honda XR650L in your country check that out first. it may actually be a better bike from what i've read but it's not available down under. :(
+ADVENTURE OZ The XR650L is available here and I have considered it but I'm still leaning towards the DR650. Probably from your videos. Don't know what dual sport I'll get but 'tough as nails reliability', comfort, light weight and torque is what I'm looking for. Currently looking at a gently used 07' Husqvarna TE450. Not keen on non-Japanese products, so this guys got to drop for me to fork out my hard earned dough.
This isn't as much of an extra tip, but as an owner of a DR650 with a Corbin seat, they're a weird buy. It's super wide and boxy on the edges, so it feels like it's cutting into your thighs everything you stand up. Also, it's rock hard. Every time I sit on my bike, I think my seat is just mildly uncomfortable. However, at the end of a 700 mile day on the DR, I still only felt "mildly uncomfortable,' so I guess all that extra width and support pays off.
+dustysquito we picked the procycle seat partly because it was the cheapest, but also it wouldn't feel weird when standing up. but as you say, that extra width must pay off if sitting on the bike all day...
I laughed when I looked up the Fastway footpegs. A mere bargain at $268. I mean, really. What do these people think? That this is the 1950's when everybody still had good paying middle class jobs? Motorcycles used to be a working man's thing. Nowadays it's a rich man's toy.
+Caya it doesn't rain here very often caya, and after most rides there's just a layer of dust so i just hose it off, spray the chain and it's all ready for the next ride. ;)
Have you found yourself wanting the lowered and backed up footpegs mounts over the standard lowered ones? You're a bit taller than me, so I'm trying to decide which route to go. Thanks!
I have me a moose racing sear on my DR650. Why the hell anyone would wanna race a moose I dont know, but hey, they are yanks, so anything is possible. My mechanic was pretty impressed with it and calls it my 'lounge chair' all I know is I have a 4 hour seat and a 4 hour fuel range so Im smiling.
+John McGuinness racing mooses.... :D i did see that one and figured if you were doing a lot of highways that would be awesome, john. but the cheaper pro cycle seat has done the trick given we aren't sitting for too long on our rides and the it's streamlined enough for standing on the pegs a lot.
+richmoto1 i couldn't really seeing them having that much benefit for adventure riding given most riders wouldn't be shifting their weight forward and back they way dirt riders would, richmoto.... what are your thoughts?
I just bought a used 2012 DR with pivot pegs. I think it's going to help make it easier to improve my weightless rider technique. Also, I prefer more flexible adventure style boots that don't use a brick for a sole. The flexible pegs immediately seemed nicer for that, as it spreads the weight out when angling my foot. I've only just got the bike, but my early impression is pivot pegs will now be a go to for me.
How is the cockpit once the pegs are lowered? I have an xr650l, but after ~40 to 50 miles my hips and knees really feel cramped. I know a guy who got a klx230 and it has an extra inch of cockpit room compared to the mighty xr! I have considered getting the seat concepts seat thinking maybe since it is better than the stock seat it might help, but in general I don't know if a happy butt will make the cramped position tolerable.
Can't really say what improvement that would make in each individual case. But generally any tall rider will be more comfortable if the pegs go down and back, and the bars are up and possibly forward too.
I wanted to do the $6 windscreen mod but I can't find a bit of plastic that's the right size and price. A large plastic bin sure as hell isn't $6 in Australia.
+Gummy Bear congrats gummy bear, those credit cards can be a nasty business. a good mate of mine finally knocked hers off but a year later she went on an overseas trip and she's maxed out on them again. :(
all good here i hope 3rd time the charm. if you keep me motivated on the dr650 should be fine :D biggest thing was closing the account they begged me not to, guess this cash cows is buying a bike in cash
+motomax if you like cheap bikes and tinkering to turn it into something special it's a dream come true. if you are all cashed up and want a bike that doesn't need tinkering then you probably won't.
+Survival Pax i've had three DR650s and three DRZ400s too. there's a lot of overlap between them, obviously the DR650 is more on the adventure side, the DRZ is closer to the dirt bike side of things. my idea of heaven would be either get the DR650 down closer to the DRZ's weight, or bore and stroke the DRZ to maybe 530cc for extra grunt. sweet!
+motomax IMO, yes. The DR650SE is a great bike. It is still the only bike that I would not hesitate to buy another one of if I somehow destroyed my current one. I love all my other bikes, but the DR650 loves me back. It is quite a humourous bike to ride if you push it and just leaves a smile on your dial as it does its best to comply with your wishes. It is generally as reliable as a hammer and if something does go wrong you can normally fix it at the side of the road with a spoon. On some other bikes you have to pay thousands of dollars more for ABS and TC, but not on this bike, it comes standard. The brakes won't let you lock up the front on the blacktop (ABS), and the rear won't break loose unless there are very special circumstances (TC). No need for Honda's HISS security system either as the Suzuki DR650 is its own anti-theft device (especially in the grey). I never have to check to make sure the antifreeze is topped up and I never have to worry about the fuel injection or the fuel pump giving up the ghost while in the middle of nowhere. Great fuel economy too. What more could you want :-)
@@crosstrainingadventure so this bike will probably go the way of the KLR.. not that i really care because im not a fan of it, especially in stock form, but the KLR i am, im sad about that. i just cant seem to find an entry level dual sport adventure bike as good as the KLR or as cheap
Why would you want to put a wind screen on that bike, there is no better feeling than the wind on you chest, I like it when the wind is blowing 50 to 80 km and ride straight in to it doing 80 or 90 Km what a great feeling, Just remember to use your guts to hold you up not your arms. I could remember living 102 Km from work and the wind blowing straight up the highway all the way to work and then 10 hr later on the way home the wind would be blowing down the highway so a good wind in my face both ways. loved that ride. I did find the seat hard at first but after about 2,000 km it was just fine. I am only 5' 9" so the bike fit pretty good, But when my new one comes I will be looking for better food pegs, also good bark buster hand guards, heated grips for cold weather we get hear in Canada, and some mounting racks for my trekker side bags 33 Lt,and top box mount 46 liters.and a center stand for easy chain maintenance. and a bash plate, Boxes on for touring and shopping and off for dirt toads and trails. Also love the DR 650 on the windy roads this will be my 3 DR the first was the 600 kick start only, and the second the Dr 650 and the new one a 2020 DR 650 it is sitting on the show room floor just waiting for the accessories to come in, want every thing on when I pick it up.
I wear a size 12 motorcycle boot and I'm debating between the lowered footpegs and the lowered/back footpegs. What do you think would be better for me?
+Lee H a big boot means you shouldn't have an issue reaching the gear and rear brake levers if the pegs are moved back. if you are fairly tall i'd say definitely go that option to get more room on the bike.
how tall do you consider tall? Im 5'11" I have JNS lowering foot pegs and that felt great for the last couple months besides being hunched over. Just put the same risers on that you have in the vid and it feels so different im not sure yet if its too much yet, still have some tweaking to do for sure but my first impression is that its too tall when sitting for riding offroad
Hard to say what 'tall' is, Kye. Maybe anything over your height? Not sure whether you'd need the risers or not although most tallish riders agree the bars need to be further forward... if not higher.
Just bought a 2017 in October. I'm 5'5" with a 27" inseam. I had to raise the bars straight away (stock bar was absurd, even just for hard corners on pavement), and I'm already looking into peg lowering after some long crampy rides... what I'm getting at is, if I'm not, who is short enough for the stock dr650? Get it together Suzuki
I'm 5'7", bought an '03 lowered. Took it for a test ride, and the bike resisted turning. Bought it anyway, it was dirt cheap, I guess the guy selling it didn't know what he had. First thing I did was restore it to the original height, and it became a ballerina. That's all it took. Six years later with a lot of'sensible' mods and I don't think I'll ever sell it. 0 problems, of course I did the neutral sensor screw fix, 68k miles later. But you're right, you need a new bar, bar risers, peg lowers and of course the seat. Seat Concepts, cheap and very good
I wanted them with the least 'sweep' back toward the rider e.g. as straight as possible. The DR650 bar mounts already angle the bars back toward the rider too much.
if doing mainly highway and easy dirt roads it's probably a better choice for many. but plan on doing some rougher stuff then the DR could be better for quite a few reasons... especially being a lot lighter.
with so much time and money going into the upgrades wouldnt it be easier to buy a ktm. How much all up did the mods cost? . And at the end does it ride better than a ktm?...im sure it is more reliable.
+Neil W the DR650 is almost half the price, so even if you completely overboard it will be cheaper. but a lot of these mods can be done very cheaply or with home made gear.... generally $1500 can transform the DR if you are on a budget. i owned a ktm 690 and the suspension on those needs a lot of work too to make them work properly... when both are set up properly i'd say the handling is very similar.
Huge range of foot pegs on offer, depends on what you are chasing, Pierre. And how much you want to spend. And whether you want to lower the pegs. Or move them to the rear as well. Procycle stocks quite a few of them, I'd suggest always checking directly and see if it's cheaper from the manufacturer. I haven't decided on foot pegs yet, but I'm using lowering mounts from this group: www.knightdesignllc.com/
@@crosstrainingadventure I just can't shift my bloody gear! Never had issue with a yz250 with mx boots but the dr seems absolutely impossible with my size 11 and formula boots... Very frustrating so I'm thinking about lower them a bit!
@@crosstrainingadventure wow those lowering mount looks like the dream and you still get 22mm less without any foot pegs modification I'm only 5.10 or 180cm I'll give this a go!!! Thanks!
+Slurm its highly addictive the key to good ergos is usually just risers and lowering plates for the footpegs which isn't too expensive... everything else is just fine tuning which would occur for most bikes. but if you are in the usa then the XR650L is still sold there and if the ergos are better on that bike then it's probably a better proposition.
you love the suzuki, yet is there any part you have not changed??? the tank , footpegs, the handlebar , the seat an so on .....maybe you should not buy this bike since you will spend more money buying all the parts from diferent manufacturers , wait longer , save a little more money and buy something you dona have to be changing all the time....
but it's a project... e.g. aiming to show the changes you can make if you want. and if you choose the cheap options it doesn't cost much still. the only comparable bike is probably the SWM 650 or the AJP PR7 which are still around $3000 more. 1
Biggest overrated motorcycle ever. Awesome Great bike but highly overrated. Good luck with the highly priced mods, hopefully people have a garage full of tools to maintain it. 😅
'Awesome Great bike but highly overrated'... sounds a bit contradictory. 😊 I'm stunned at the money some guys spend on mods but they usually enjoy the process, I guess. But there's a pile of free or cheap mods for most of the issues. Plus I ride with three guys who have bought 690s or 701s who have all spent over $2000 trying to get the suspension to work. Then more for comfortable seats, big tanks, engine protection, aftermarket exhausts...

Thanks for the tip, AC, I'll be making a screen for my new DR650 soon. www.mulfordplastics.com.au/
@@crosstrainingadventure When the vaccine has rolled out there will be a shit-ton of 'safety screens' going cheap :-)

P.S love your work on your bush pig
+maccas motorbikes thanks macca.... putting some knobbies on soon and then she'll really be ready for a blast :)
+ADVENTURE OZ Thanks Barry, I'll check it out!
I want to bring my DR650 to you guys and do just about everything you recommend . Just can't afford the ticket .
start doing the easy parts yourself, and you will break through the fear and learn how easy it is to change most vehicles to improve them.

I use Rustoleum white primer on my boxtruck , works great . Sold that DR650 3 months after getting my Tenere 700 in July 2020 . Love that bike but sure would like something lighter . Probably will get a DR650 again but one with the 790 kit and other mods or maybe a KTM 690 that got all the wrinkles worked out .
best way to lower, is getting sm rims 17s with 50/50 tires, doesnt affect the ride..am 5'3 works perfect
SANTA MUERTE flatfoot? I'm 5 11 just curious
Those wired pegs looked sweet
When I tried to add Rox Risers to my DR, cable length seemed to be an issue. I have not dug into the cable routing to see if I can free up some slack as of yet but seeing the DR in the vid using them tells me I should make a second attempt.
+Caleb Moyer the only change i needed to make caleb was rotating the throttle housing a bit to allow more slack.
love these videos fella, but yeah how the bugger do you wheelie it so easily?
Love the channel, I've done most of the mods you've shown.

How do you wheelie so easily ? it really pisses me off :-)
+Rick French had a few questions about the wheelies a couple of years back rick, did this vid: ua-cam.com/video/BQeMmKsyjgI/v-deo.html
+Peter Jowett i'm sort of the other end of the scale and freakishly tall, peter.... so not too sure. as far as i know it's the lowest of bikes with a decent engine size, you'd only get lower by going to around 200cc or less. i'm sure she would get her feet on the ground at least, and then it would be just judging if the weight isn't too much. if she's an experienced rider already then that wouldn't be a problem! there are lots of threads around too like this one: www.thumpertalk.com/topic/962006-dr650-how-low-can-she-go/
+ADVENTURE OZ I'll give it a look, thanks for the input, Barry.
Yes that fucking seat. I enter pushbike races, I can do a 5 hour race on a pushbike and my arse is in better shape than after 2 on a stock DR.
And the aftermarket seats are crazy expensive! Being tall, I just cut some old foam and stapled some back vinyl across the raised widened seat on my latest DR... very comfy but so ugly lol.
@@crosstrainingadventure Yup - theirs > $40 (NZ pesos) of material in the kits. Time to break out the sewing machine.
Your convincing me to get a DR650 bush-pig.......
+Review Guru if they sell the honda XR650L in your country check that out first. it may actually be a better bike from what i've read but it's not available down under. :(
+ADVENTURE OZ
The XR650L is available here and I have considered it but I'm still leaning towards the DR650.
Seat Concepts, cures all that. $169 US
I laughed when I looked up the Fastway footpegs. A mere bargain at $268. I mean, really. What do these people think? That this is the 1950's when everybody still had good paying middle class jobs? Motorcycles used to be a working man's thing. Nowadays it's a rich man's toy.
Thanks Barry, I am saving this for later when I finaly buy my own DR650.
Also, your DR is ridiculously clean. How's that even possible?
+Caya it doesn't rain here very often caya, and after most rides there's just a layer of dust so i just hose it off, spray the chain and it's all ready for the next ride. ;)
Have you found yourself wanting the lowered and backed up footpegs mounts over the standard lowered ones? You're a bit taller than me, so I'm trying to decide which route to go. Thanks!
covered in detail in this series, steven
I know you said you were ok with the standard ones at the time. I was wondering if you'd changed your mind since then.
Great job. You didn't cover pivot pegs. What do you think of them? We love 'em!
+richmoto1 i couldn't really seeing them having that much benefit for adventure riding given most riders wouldn't be shifting their weight forward and back they way dirt riders would, richmoto.... what are your thoughts?
+ADVENTURE OZ They are excellent for shifting and braking while standing, especially for those who like to stand up wheelie, ha!
0:41 that voice crack haha
My mother doesn't have a brother. Sorry I couldn't help. Love the videos though!
I just went and looked up the Flexx bars. What a choice selection! How did you choose your bars? I'm 6'2". Thanks!
i asked them what they recommended for my size and type of riding
With those two inch Rox Risers did you have any issues with having to lengthen cables Ect..... ? Cheers Guys!
I think I popped the tank off and just fiddled with the clutch cable to get a bit more slack.
Did you need to buy anything any of the cables to put in the raiser mounts from the video?
No, stock cables
We're the cables long enough with the Rox Pros installed ? Thanks for your vids!👍🏻👌🏻
yep!
Really great build. I'm currently fitting the 2 inch rox risers on my DR and find that some cables are tight, like the throttle. Any tips?
You can just spin the throttle housing 180 degrees which gives heaps of free play. Move levers in along the bars a little.
@@crosstrainingadventure Thanks for the tip! I ended up re-routing the throttle cables closer to the handlebars and there's plenty of freeplay now :D
I wanted to do the $6 windscreen mod but I can't find a bit of plastic that's the right size and price. A large plastic bin sure as hell isn't $6 in Australia.
i know, i had to pay $10 :(
Where? They were $40 at my local Bunning's and not large enough. Also, is it not being transparent a problem?
credit cards payed off and closed the account- i see a 650 in my future soon :D
+Gummy Bear congrats gummy bear, those credit cards can be a nasty business. a good mate of mine finally knocked hers off but a year later she went on an overseas trip and she's maxed out on them again. :(
all good here i hope 3rd time the charm.
if you keep me motivated on the dr650 should be fine :D biggest thing was closing the account they begged me not to, guess this cash cows is buying a bike in cash
thanks helps you sleep better too :D
Is this bike worth it over all?
+motomax if you like cheap bikes and tinkering to turn it into something special it's a dream come true. if you are all cashed up and want a bike that doesn't need tinkering then you probably won't.
+Survival Pax dr650 or drz400?
+Survival Pax i've had three DR650s and three DRZ400s too. there's a lot of overlap between them, obviously the DR650 is more on the adventure side, the DRZ is closer to the dirt bike side of things. my idea of heaven would be either get the DR650 down closer to the DRZ's weight, or bore and stroke the DRZ to maybe 530cc for extra grunt. sweet!
+motomax
IMO, yes.
+Joburble fit it with a spoon.... lol. a very good summary of why many of us love the bushpig joburble.
You mention your new seat is a bit lower than stock.
As a taller rider, wouldn't you prefer a tall seat? Is there any downside to a taller seat?
all comes down to personal preference i guess, jack
Any one have any links to some affordable stunt bars / crash bars & crank Casing covers
this is amazing how this bike has transformed but i have to ask.. why the hell doesnt the bike come like this from suzuki..
apparently the moment they do any non-cosmetic changes they'd have to meet all the latest pollution regs etc.... whole engine would need a redesign. 😥
@@crosstrainingadventure now I’ll have to live the rest of my life knowing I’m not tall 😂 think I’ll try the offset 1” risers by Rox speed next
Sounds like a plan, Kye! Hopefully moving the bars forward but not too high will make the difference.
hey I would like to recommend a dirtbike it is a KTM 450 SX 2006 it has a lot of low end power and relatively light
Seat Concepts, cheap and very good
What degree angle flexx handlebars do you suggest?
I wanted them with the least 'sweep' back toward the rider e.g. as straight as possible. The DR650 bar mounts already angle the bars back toward the rider too much.
I think I will just get a KLR seems already set up and it has a 6 gallon tank!
if doing mainly highway and easy dirt roads it's probably a better choice for many. but plan on doing some rougher stuff then the DR could be better for quite a few reasons... especially being a lot lighter.
where did you get the shims for the risers, did the come with them or can you get them separate?
+Andrew Turner if you get the pivot risers that suit both narrow and fast bars, the shims are included
Do yo know where to get handle bar shims from?
+Andrew Turner no but they'd be out there somewhere

LMAO at the first 30 seconds!
with so much time and money going into the upgrades wouldnt it be easier to buy a ktm.
So procycle is the go for the foot pegs???

Why isn't the XR650L sold in Oz ?
None of us knows why. A very very stupid decision on Honda's part and the DR650 has sold like hotcakes ever since. 😒

Can just imagine that baby's feet frying on the exhaust
the DR650 doesnt seem worth it if the bike needs a laundry list of pricey mods to get the ergos right
+Slurm its highly addictive the key to good ergos is usually just risers and lowering plates for the footpegs which isn't too expensive... everything else is just fine tuning which would occur for most bikes. but if you are in the usa then the XR650L is still sold there and if the ergos are better on that bike then it's probably a better proposition.

you love the suzuki, yet is there any part you have not changed??? the tank , footpegs, the handlebar , the seat an so on .....maybe you should not buy this bike since you will spend more money buying all the parts from diferent manufacturers , wait longer , save a little more money and buy something you dona have to be changing all the time....
but it's a project... e.g. aiming to show the changes you can make if you want. and if you choose the cheap options it doesn't cost much still. the only comparable bike is probably the SWM 650 or the AJP PR7 which are still around $3000 more.

I agree but when the budget is tight, ehhh
@@Tirikitaon actually you got a point right there bud :D im all too familiar with that problem
