  • I applied to Oxford twice so I have double the experience at choosing a college! Here are my top 7 underrated tips for picking an Oxford college.
    (The first time I was rejected and I applied to Brasenose College, Oxford. The second time I was accepted and I applied to Trinity College, Oxford.)
    This advice in picking a college is particularly useful for 2021 where there are no in-person open days so you cannot see the colleges in real life. Therefore it is even more important to know what to look out for.

    The acceptance odds are true, but I don't think it actually affects the chances of getting into the University. On the official website it states "This 'reallocation' helps us ensure that the best candidates, regardless of which college they select, are offered places. In 2021, 26% of successful applicants got an offer from a college they didn't specify on their application.". If I chose the hardest college to get into, but didn't get a place there, the interviews I did at other colleges would then be considered.

      I think a less competitive college might keep their applicants if people from the pool are a tiny bit better (they won't bother to replace), but had those people applied to that college, the college would have taken them. Just a theory

    Hello I chose to be enrolled with some college after I was unsuccessful at retrieving my CAS from the other college however as the Oxonian processes are seamless I could still be awarded my CAS from my previous college for me to be enrolled as such, such procedure is tremendously of benefit to the candidates for their degrees, thank you.

    Thank you for this useful video ! When you calculate the acceptance odds, do you use the number of offers to Oxford uni or to the particular college ?

    • @Sam.Kramer
      @Sam.Kramer  2 роки тому +2

      When calculating the decimal on excel, I did everything for the particular college - is that what you mean? Thanks for watching!

      @@Sam.Kramer Thanks for taking the time to answer!
      What I meant is whether the acceptance odds you've got on excel were a ratio for acceptance to Oxford or one for acceptance to the college (since I know that some applicants get accepted but not in the college they applied for I didn't know if those were accounted for).
      As I am an international student and don't know much about studies in the UK though I seriously consider moving there (and Oxford would be my dream) I asked myself whether choosing one of the "easier" colleges could increase my chances of getting in the university.
      I watched most of your vids and find them very detailed and helpful so thank you for all your help!
      BTW could you do a video on the different colleges and also one on your personal experience when you'll have become used to life there?

    • @Sam.Kramer

      Ah I understand - really good question. I believe it is calculated like this: if someone applies to Trinity but gets offered a place by Brasenose, they would be part of the ‘applications’ for Trinity but count as one of the ‘offers’ for Brasenose. But I am not completely 100%. But I thought PPE was a good data set to use because it is so popular that these such things should not change the stats much either way. I will definitely make videos about the colleges and I have set myself a challenge to make a tour/ramble video at each of the 39! Thanks so much for watching again, is there anything you think would be good for me to make before I go up to Oxford ie. that I can film right now from home? (apart from the obvious interview stuff!)

      @@Sam.Kramer Thanks it’s much clearer now! (it was especially useful since I’m applying to PPE) - That’s really cool if you want to continue running this channel while studying. - You might do a video on stereotypes on Oxford since I’ve recently realised that a lot of people have a false idea of it. Then you might also make a vid on sth linked to your course since it seems that you’re truly passionate about it. By the way I also study Greek in high school and really enjoy it :)

      @Sam.Kramer  2 роки тому +6

      Thank you so much!! I've not actually been to Christ Church so bear that in mind - but I think they used to have a strong connection with institutions like Eton College which has now ended and have since been working quite hard to actively reverse that culture and so take more eg. State school students than the average college etc etc etc. Hopefully all those facts are right 😂 what kind of bad stuff have you heard that you are worried about?

      @@Sam.Kramer I’ve heard a lot of rumors that it has a lot of racist scandals and does little to change that. Also that there’s a big toxic private school boy culture there. I really like the college but wouldn’t want to go to a place like that ygm

      It's a hard one. Maybe try find stats online about applicant breakdown (gender race school type etc) which may give some indication. But it's a such a shame people are put off first choices because of this (either way if it be untrue or true). I guess its a balance with how clearly this would be your first choice otherwise and what features made you like it (and how much you can find the features in other colleges) etc etc

    Admission doesn’t matter, if you don’t get into one college your application is forwarded to another

    • @Sam.Kramer

      I think if you are a 7.5/10 applicant that gets placed in the pool, you won't replace eg. the 7.4/10 applicants in any given college that applied there directly. So I think it does matter!

      Ofc the other thing from an admission standpoint is u can try and guarantee a college u quite like as opposed to the randomness of any if u get pooled but still accepted (if u choose a over subbed college which many still get in but get pooled from) I guess that's still kinda admissions-y

    Hmmm, now that you have presumably been at Oxford for two and a half terms you might look at this video with some degree of chagrin, if only for the hubris of choosing to make a video on this subject before actually going up. Your views may also change in your second year. Many people do spend much of their second year losing many of their friends of their first year.
    I have some concern, though, that there are some methodological flaws here. You present a number of criteria, but there is no basis for concluding these are the optimal criteria, nor even correct criteria. There also seems to be some confirmation bias about Trinity (a thoroughly good college), when you have not been in a position to verify some of your statements.
    For what it is worth, I think you leave out, or bypass, the most important criterion, which is character. I think you dismiss it as stereotype. However, different colleges do have different characters, and in my day I could easily distinguish a Houseman from a Merton man, for example. This will affect the people who may or may not become your friends. I definitely avoided some colleges because of character, and I was entirely correct. I also know some people who ignored the character of the college t which they applied, and regretted it deeply. You are not always going to think your college was the best one for you.
    I wish you the best for your remaining three years.
