  • This was the final spot I caught 4014 at before heading home. It was a nice last catch!
The crossing here has an interesting mix of equipment. Unfortunately, two of the four bells at this crossing are dead, including the Safetran mechanical bell here, as it just clicks.
    Locomotives:
    -UP 4014 (Alco 4-8-8-4)
    -UP 4015 (EMD SD70M)
    Location: Tower Rd. (Aurora, CO)
    Train: UP Steam Excursion Train
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights with Electrotech LEDs, a Safetran gate mechanism, a dying Safetran mechanical bell, RECO LED gate lights.
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights with Electrotech LEDs, a Safetran gate mechanism, a WCH type 2 electronic bell, RECO LED gate lights.
Near Median Signal: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights with Electrotech LEDs, a Safetran gate mechanism, a dead WCH electronic bell, RECO LED gate lights.
Far Median Signal: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights with Electrotech LEDs, a Safetran gate mechanism, a WCH type 2 electronic bell, RECO LED gate lights.
    Railroad: UP Limon Subdivision

Great catch and crossing! Shame the Safetran bell there is dead.

I filmed 4014 at this crossing in 2019, and the m-bell was working perfectly then. I remember seeing it being fixed in August 2019 and now it's broken again 2 years later. I think its end is nearing unfortunately. Great vid btw!

All the safetran needs is adjustable. As long as it's clicking like that it's good. Should be a easy fix. Unfortunately I'm sure a signal maintainer wouldn't even bother and just replace it.

Is it clicking? Reveals thathe coil has not opened or shorted! Yes, needs adjustment andikely contact filing.
The mechanicabells I have all work but have been replaced. Thelectronic bells use less electricity and are heard better by hearing impaired.

@@robertgift no. The electronic bells sound like garbage and die faster. The only good thing about them is they are much lighter so easier to replace.

@@gregrocks66 I expecthelectronic bells to last far longer because nothing mechanical. No maintenance, no adjustments.
Hate the fake bell'sound, but is actually better for hearing impaired.
In China they use a reentrant horn speaker which is morefficient andirectional.

@@robertgift we went from all m bells in Griffith to all e bells. And I’ve seen them die so fast one of the crossings went through at least 3 bell changes

@@robertgift I’ve seen some e-bells die within a few years after being installed as opposed to mechanical bells, which work for decades.

Good catch! She was definitely going slow through there.
Two years ago I caught the Big Boy at this exact crossing as she made her way into Denver: ua-cam.com/video/Vco8RBd0zf8/v-deo.html
Tower Road is at the very end. The 4014 was booking it through there!

Of this 2:14 video, 4014 iseen *only 9 seconds* . Video the train approaching and turn the camera following the locomotive as it passes.
As an Operation Lifesaver presenter I have pedestrian bells. When the bell coil's contact opens, (every clapper strike), the low-voltage high-amperage arc causeslight contact wear. Such eventually requires deburring. (filing) Also believe thathe bell clapper bearings need to be cleaned and lubricated. Thelectronic loudspeaker fake bells are heard better by people withearing problems.

I got a separate shot of 4014 with a different camera. Even if I didn’t, it’s *my* video. If I want to film the crossing, I’m gonna film the crossing. Also, the mechanical bell ended getting replaced this year.
