Yes it's great to support physical media but you also have to support the people who are making new games.. and the companies who are making console to play these games
That would be more appropriate for my age range. I'm forty-one, so you have to be older than me to enjoy it. My first system was NES and I have no nostalgia for old Atari games.
Careful what you wish. Don't even say those words. You're putting energy into the universe that will certainly come back. I wish I had five hundred million dollars, nothing else.
This is the second review I've watched this morning. Interesting that in the first one they never mentioned that long load time for each game. Makes me wonder if they are worried that the freebies may stop if they say anything negative at all. Thanks for giving it to us straight.
Still have 7 or 8 original 2600's floating around including my original I got for Christmas in 1978 along with a 5200 and 7800. I have a few hundred 2600 games in my collection but mostly play them on a retron 77 for convenience, space saving and to use the modern TV's in my main game room. This might be worth looking into just to have another thing taking up space in the second game room.
That looks like it is sequel to Miner 2049’er that I played on the 400! It was tough, even infuriating, but also one I liked a lot. If this is better that’d be cool.
I’m old, so I had Bounty Bob on the 800. If you come at it thinking in terms of how Mario would control you will just become frustrated. First, just concentrate on how he moves, jumps and how far he can fall before dying. Then one you understand the physics of the game, it becomes a puzzle to figure out how to walk over all platform areas and finish in time. Damn hard, but once you get it, replay is very rewarding, like many old games. These were meant to last a lifetime, and provide long and continued replay value.
Man, Atari was well before my time, but thanks to the Evercade, Atari 50, and the 2600+ I’ve loved going and discovering these older games and building a collection. I’ve definitely got a solid collection now and some stand out favorites. I preordered this also. I’m looking forward to it!
Nintendo needs to do this with every console from the NES to the Game Cube but especially for the cartridge systems. It would be amazing to get a new NES console from it's original creator in 2025. I'm not meaning the mini consoles with built in games however some game collections on multi-carts would be great. Nintendo is missing a HUGE opportunity here.
If Nintendo would do a NES or SNES version of this, it would sell like crazy. I had Atari when I was a kid but very few of those games aged well. I have very little nostalgia for going back and playing Atari.
Oh I'm getting this. I still have my original and a tube TV to play it on, but the new years party is gonna be lit this year with this on a large flat screen
Although I would rather see these new “plus” consoles use an FPGA chip rather than rely on emulation, I think they’re a great option for people who want to easily and (fairly) authentically play old Atari games on their new TVs. What really excites me is the re-release of some of these hard-to-find games that are getting too expensive to buy secondhand as well as the newer releases like Caverns of Mars and Frenzy. I also really like how they’ve been re-issuing classic and upgraded versions of their controllers, for example the wireless gamepad that comes with the 7800+. I think sticking with the 2600 and 7800 platforms right now is the best way for them to go, there are not only hundreds of games available for them, but there’s tons of great new games and new ports being released by third parties all the time.
I still have my original 7800 and do play it from time to time. Introduced my kids to it. They like playing Joust and Centipede on it. Did a physical mod to it so it would output S-Video. Hook that to the retrotink and it looks decent. I did get the 2600+ when it came out, and I have preordered this as well, mostly for the aesthetics since the 2600+ has the same capabilities.
One interesting thing about the new games being released (which are homebrews), it proves a conspiracy theory I heard for years, but always doubted. And that is that the 7800 hardware was roughly on par with the NES, but the games looked so much worse because Atari insisted on sticking to 48K cartridges. So the difference between the systems was more about the cartridges than it was the consoles themselves. Some of these homebrews go up to 256K and sure enough, with the same memory as NES cartridges, the graphics actually do look they could compete with the NES. Edt: Before anyone says, "LMAO, the games he showed sucked!" He didn't show off any of the higher memory games I was referring to. Look up A.R.T.I. or E.X.O. for the best examples.
I appreciate what they did, especially keeping the price to $129, however you have to be appreciate these game for what they are and how much playing time you will get out of it. To have this as a collectible, Im down with as I will be getting one, but for those who never experienced Atari games, they may be disappointed. They did a great job with the presentation, and that’s why $129 is well worth it.
Great Review! The load time is not an issue for me. I don’t even notice. A small trade off for being able to have a Brand New Atari System! And being able to play New and Old Games, and in Crisp Clear HDMI! The Atari 7800+ is well worth getting, this System won’t disappoint!
Glad for this. Im tired of the solutions with a carousel of 5000 game ROMs, its like trying to commit to eating only one food at a buffet. Physical gives me incentive to play through what I have collected.
Hopefully there will be lots of new games come out for it and maybe a few of the old classics, its not easy to find the old games for them and you also risk some not working
I went for the Gamestation Pro because I don't have a lot of room for physical media as much as I'd rather have it... Glad this was released though. We need some of these continuation modern consoles to come to market. For once it feels like Atari is on the front end of a new trend... Things not on my 2024 bingo card LOL
i wish nintendo would do the same with their older consoles as i am sure they would sell well becouse i would pick up the older consoles and older handheld consoles i can live with only local play as i would prefer physical games with those kind of consoles and of course i'd own the OG versions and special versions so i'd own one set i set aside and one set i use
Are there any hardware differences between the 2600+ and the 7800+? Because it looks like the only difference is the name and the packed in controllers. I saw reviews of the 2600+ so I know it plays the same games.
Back in the day ...I purchased 2 of the original Atari 7800's when it launched. To my surprise the Atari 7800 games that were also available on the Atari 5200 ...looked & played exactly the same. IMO, the new 7800+ appears to be just a Cash grab for Atari since it is too outdated to bother with. However, If you're a collector and/or a Retro Gamer ...I'm sure you'll probably grab a couple of these.👍
I stopped caring about graphics and technology back in 2007. Realistic graphics are overrated, give me a game with great gameplay any day. Ray traced graphics put me to sleep. The fact that new games with 80s graphics are still being made for PC and modern consoles shows that there is a market for those type of games.
Not sure why they took the emulation route when they could had easily used FPGA which would had play those games more accurately. I would had bought one if it's FPGA.
Atari is on the right track. I hope they continue to grow to becoming bigger, better, and offer the gaming world new and exclusive experiences.
Support physical! This, the 2600 Plus, the Retron 5 and the Evercade is what we need to support if we still want physical copies of games!
Yes it's great to support physical media but you also have to support the people who are making new games.. and the companies who are making console to play these games
I love the Evwrcade!
Preach
i wish they would make an Atari Jaguar version.
....they will..
YUCK
Problem is that they wouldn't have permissions to include the best games: Alien vs Predator, DOOM, Rayman, etc.
Good to see the Atari UA-camr making videos to entertain
Nintendo. Get it right.

r/woosh... I think.
This is the second review I've watched this morning. Interesting that in the first one they never mentioned that long load time for each game. Makes me wonder if they are worried that the freebies may stop if they say anything negative at all. Thanks for giving it to us straight.
Pre-ordered mine! Thanks for the video I wouldnt of known this was a thing unless I saw this video
Never played an Atari, but I might buy it just to show support to the retro/physical community
We are still playing Core Keeper... Super Fun Game Thanks so much...👍😎

We’re taking it way back to the Atari I’ve seen and have all from 1980-Now every console and tons of games what a life of gaming
In Bounty Bob Strikes Back, you need to walk on all of the platforms to turn them solid. It's hard as balls!
That looks like it is sequel to Miner 2049’er that I played on the 400! It was tough, even infuriating, but also one I liked a lot. If this is better that’d be cool.
It’s great

Don't know if you figured it out. But you can unscrew the joy stick and use it as a traditional d pad if you wanted to
And probably use a Genesis controller too

I wish they would reprint rare GameCube and Wii games.
@@Maikeru722
If they would do that, they'd probably do it for their first-party titles. The rest would be up to the original publishers.
Why would they when they can keep selling you morons the same games over and over😂
Imagine the hit the secondary market would take. It would be glorious.
They are not missing any opportunities. They are still selling the roms on the switch, carts would be just an extra cost for them.
If Nintendo would do a NES or SNES version of this, it would sell like crazy.
I had Atari when I was a kid but very few of those games aged well. I have very little nostalgia for going back and playing Atari.
It would but nintendo hates us :)
They did NES and SNES mini, but they can’t play physical games though
I’m newer to the system and games and there are a ton of amazing games on these that are still great today
Oh I'm getting this. I still have my original and a tube TV to play it on, but the new years party is gonna be lit this year with this on a large flat screen
Space Duel is an Atari version of Asteroids. 😎 cool Retrostuff

It uses emulation rather than FPGA. That generally means Everdrives won't work. That is a deal breaker for me but happy for those that want it.
I didn’t know anyone to own a master system but I definitely knew someone to own one of these back in the day, he had food fight and pole position
Great review! Great channel!
Got my 7800+ in a few days ago. I'm thrilled with it due to nostalgia for 2600 titles. I might get the 2600+ as well for a different room. Haha.
The Retro King is at it again with more great Christmas ideas!
They should make a new version of ninja golf.
I still have my original 7800 and do play it from time to time. Introduced my kids to it. They like playing Joust and Centipede on it. Did a physical mod to it so it would output S-Video. Thats why I like homebrew. Some of these new games for old systems are pushing these systems futher than the company that made them.
The 7800 really deserves a second chance, it's a really technically impressive console, and I wanna see more new games made for it!
This looks kind of great.
Can't wait to see AVGN's reaction to this.
Thanks for the video. This is a cooler system than I imagined. Cool
Love you reviews I don't forget what Atari was known for .
Got one for Christmas and DANG prices are going insane on Atari games now....
I wish us regular plebs could get that multi game pack.
You are what's up for keeping Berserk. One of the best.
I’ve been alive so long that this was my first system my mom bought brand new at Funko land in Columbus, Ohio back in 87 that’s nuts😂😂😂😂
There's a game called Rikki and Vikki. It has a special sound chip that sounds kinda like a PC engine but better. Check it out! Incredible game!
R&V doesn't work on these + consoles.
@inranglhood60 unfortunately 😕
❤ retro gaming Atari 7800 Damn Sega Make a comeback plz if Atari can u can Too Sega !!!!
Lol! 😂 you ruined uncle Jeff's Christmas present..🤦♂️

The thumb stick screws out if you would prefer to play with the plain d-pad.
Crystal quest is a sequel to crystal castles which was a game to have back in the day
The ATARI 7800 is awesome! This is the system when HULKS collide....ATARI 7800 vs COMMODORE 64 !

A bit pricey, but I never had a 7800.
I skipped straight from a 2600 to an NES.
A few 7800 games to check out, like Midnight Mutants, Ninja Golf, and the 7800 version of Commando and Ikari Warriors. Plus all the homebrews.
@@KrunchyTheClown78 Ninja Golf looked like some stupid-awesome fun!

Have you seen the Sega Genesis cartridge for the Sonic 3 Movie?
do you think this will be collectable?
Hopefully there will be lots of new games come out for it and maybe a few of the old classics, its not easy to find the old games for them and you also risk some not working
honestly i wish theyd just come out with a fpga console that could play between all the atari consoles.
Gonna pause and guess you got the VIP version that us plebes are not allowed to even buy.
That thumb stick screws off if you don't want to use it .
Can it play Command and Conquer on the N64, though?
this means that "CX78+ Wireless Gamepad" should work with Atari XL/XE :O
Is there anypoint to still owning the Atari 2600+ now that this is out??
I went for the Gamestation Pro because I don't have a lot of room for physical media as much as I'd rather have it... Glad this was released though. We need some of these continuation modern consoles to come to market. For once it feels like Atari is on the front end of a new trend... Things not on my 2024 bingo card LOL
So this is strictly cartridges only? Can roms be added?
If it would support the Harmony cart, I would all in.
You dont have to wait for the cart each time. Don't power off the console and just swap the cart.
Will the Game Drive work on it?
Also, I wish Sega would do this with their consoles and rerelease games as well
Sad they don't offer this bundle for sale. Only bundles available just include extra controllers/hdmi
I forgot I preordered this, hopefully the loading times are fixed. So weird it has it.
I like to see a 5200 version. Hyperkin never made one.
I wish it was an FPGA chip in there. This would then be perfect.
Will this work with the Atari2600 Harmony cart ?
Is this the first time a video game company has re-released games on the original cartridges?
Can it play 2600 games?
Yes it can, just like the 2600+ released a year ago can play 7800 games.
Looks nice but I’m waiting for e.a. skate I’m hyped for that
I wish they included av out.
Now we just need a Jaguar+.

Because it looks like the only difference is the name and the packed in controllers.
I saw reviews of the 2600+ so I know it plays the same games.
20 seconds to load a 32kb game is insane
maybe its starting the system behind the emulator? android??^^
It's also really not a long time and hardly super inconvenient.
Does the extension stick pop off the dpad?
Yes, you can unscrew the stick from the dpad. Most people do this for better control.
I think the d-pad is great either way.
Unscrew the nub and you'll get just the D-pad itself if the nub is an issue.
I hope atari can work with their third parties to re-release some activision or namco repro cartidges, Nintendo is probably out the question.
I hate that all these modern consoles dont have an AV option, I want to connect these to my CRT without a stupid adapter.
You can get an OG 7800
Just use a HD to crt converter.
i preorded it i got a load of cartridges
.......technically.....and even that is up for debate.
The whole point of Atari was you flicked the switch and you played. No loading screens! Or you switched games until one worked 😅
Back in the day ...I purchased 2 of the original Atari 7800's when it launched. To my surprise the Atari 7800 games that were also available on the Atari 5200 ...looked & played exactly the same. hi RGT
While these are great, I also feel Atari are also kinda milking the brand again.
I personally think it's different this time, since they releasing new games. Atari really needs to make more games based on Bentley Bear.
