When cars used to have fuel tanks, the German road assistance company ADAC tested them and complained when the fuel flap was on the driver side. If you get stranded due to not enough fuel (esp unrestricted Autobahn) you do not want to refuel on the driver side and get hit by a passing vehicle. Hence, all German brands put the flap on the passenger side.
I recently got the iX1 and I'm pretty impressed with it. I was debating for the EQE, but I got a lot more bang for my buck with the iX1. I indeed agree with the position of the charging port.. it's been a bit of a nuisance in parking spaces where I end up in the exact same situation where there's little space left to hook up the cable.
Really looking forward to the video about these charger containers 🙂 About the EV spotting. I've noticed there's „a lot“ of EVs on the roads ‒ I mean, the percentage of registered EVs is pretty low. But I notice them on the road quite often, definitely more often than would be the fair share comparing with the registered cars. My theory is, if someone drives a lot, they are more likely to buy an EV. If someone mostly doesn't drive but keeps a 20 year old car in the barn, they still count in the registered cars, but they are not likely to be seen on the road. So maybe if we get to a point of 20% registered cars being EVs, it might as well be something like 50% of the traffic. Or maybe I'm just overly optimistic.
Totally agree one the correct charger side for an EV. At least in Norway many garages where built some time ago, the last 10 or so years the car have gotten wider and wider, so often we need to park close to a wall on one side. And that cannot be the driver side... so now the charger port should be on the driver side as it can be difficult get to the port on the passenger side.
Left side is the wrong side. More charging stations are now available on public streets, which makes it much better to have the charge port on the right side
As long as the driver's door is on the left side then the charge port should also be on the left side. Or do you exit on the right side of the car? lol
For me the right side also makes more sense. Public parkings are in drive direction along the street. And the charging station is more on the pedestrian (right). For sure you exit on the left but you don‘t need to span the cable all around the car. 😊
At some roads cars are passing by at 50 km/h and it's really tight. Standing out in the road fiddling with the charge port on such streets is a real hazard
You only need 3 seconds to plug in. Real hazard only if you are super clumsy and need several minutes to plug in. Remember that we're not refueling here. We just need to plug in...
@@bjornnyland but when you parking your car with the front first as most of us does, right side is actually better. You don't haver to cross the cable when you are going into the car :)

Yes ! All cars should have charging ports on the Volvo/ Polestar / Tesla driver side. All those people who bought a plug in hybrid and put their home charger on the driver side...BMW/ MB /VW take note
Have you actually considered that when you parallel-park next to a sidewalk on a two-way street the charger would always be on your right-hand side, so this is actually the better side for the port, otherwise you might need to park opposite to the traffic for the cable to reach the port? According to me the best place for it is in the front middle, as it gives you the best accessibility.
You are complaining about the charger connection on the right side of the car, but that is the best position, because if you park along a street side, with a left handed vehicle, you always park with the right side to the sidewalk, where the charger is positioned. So no cable over the street, but short to the car.
A thought about the " right" place for the chargeport. It would be convenient if the chargeport is on the right side for cars used in right hand traffic and on the left side for cars used in left hand traffic.
If the charging station was on the other side, then how do I exit the car then? Having the charge port on the same side the driver is has its advantages...
Yeah, would really like to see this and the iX3 come to the US. Unfortunately as both are made in China, they're subject to a 27.5% import tariff so BMW elected not to bring them here.
This is a good EV, but it is not coming to North America, what a shame it would be high in my list to replace my X3, now I am looking outside the brand for the first time since 2002.
I park always forward into the garage to get out the stuff of the trunk... so the right side would be the right side if the charging station would be on the right side. But it isn't 😂. So for our Ioniq electric is the left side the right side but for the GTX is the right side the wrong side. So it depends 🤷♂
This would be a perfect replacement for i3 but, just like the iX3 - is not available in North America. NA dealerships were in an uproar with the iX3 that the 'range is too short'. The truth is they do not want to lose money on the service side of the business and have conceded EV victory to Tesla.

I own a Tesla Model 3 so I could afford a BMW IX3. Nevertheless, I have no way of charging at home because I park in a large communal garage that is not equipped with charging stations. Not everyone who can afford a 60,000 euro plus car has their own house. Nevertheless, I agree that the charge port belongs on the left side. Independent of the parking space, I am basically on the left side of the car too. So if I can get out on the left side without any danger, I can also plug in the car on this side. Sometimes I need a longer cable. But an 8m type 2 cable is available from 200 euros.
