What Should Wizards Do With D&D 4e? - OGB Live Excerpt

- D&D 4e seems to be the game that Wizards of the Coast would like to pretend never existed. But many of us swear by it. During the last live stream, I offered my thoughts on what Wizards of the Coast should do with D&D 4th Edition.

This is an unpretentious, inclusive community of people that love tabletop roleplaying games including ALL versions of Dungeons and Dragons.
#dnd4e #ttrpg #dnd5e #dnd #ttrpgfamily #dungeonmaster #dungeonsanddragons #gamemaster
I would snatch up that content in no time. I miss all my old 4e stuff
I would love a Creative Commons licensed SRD for 4E. I hope the community keeps pushing for it.
4E is so underrated. It came way ahead of its time, imo.
Edit: It's a good thing there are games like the 13th Age that took inspiration from 4E and brought it to the more modern crowd.
Thanks Greybeard! ❤
The best thing about a 4e SRD would be that we could maybe get a new fan made character builder for modern computers.
4e is not my jam but I hope they put all the older editions into ogl or Creative Commons. More D&D is always good.
I think they reason 4e would be their own competition for the 5.5e money-printer online... thing... Still! Would be great. 4e had some nice ideas.
I'd love for them to make 4e OGL, but I doubt they ever will. WotC hates 4e for whatever reason. I think the only reason we would get an OGL for TSR era editions is because the OSR is so big, and if they can make people put Wizards of the Coast in their books it would make them happy.
Considering almost every OSR game used the OGL all of the TSR editions already have a OGL equivalent.
If they're worried about competition, they would just open up the DMGUILD to other editions.
The GSL wasn't as restrictive as most people think. Check out the book Ultramodern 4. It's a modern day supplement for 4e. Really cool too.
WotC should put out a CC SRD for it. All they wanted to do is memory hole it in the hopes everyone would forget it existed.
Well it is quite restrictive as in you cant use a lot of terms classes etc. Ultramodern is possible because it made all its own classes.
Honestly, my favorite use of 4e was actually the original build version of Neverwinter. 4e mechanics really did suit an MMO play style, and I really enjoyed the build variety and mechanics of Neverwinter. If such a game version were to come out, I’d happily play that as an MMO and glide around the battlefield as my cleric chaining enemies in place and doing radiant damage.
The MMO did not use 4E mechanics. Like st all. Just the names. Completely differenr mechanics
I played that game with my wife for a good while. She found it and got me into it. I liked it mostly for the iconic locations it had in the game. Definitely had a 4e feel to it. We stopped when they completely changed all the classes and we had to rebuild everything. I couldn't be bothered and just got burnt out by then.
That would be amazing. I think of the 4e Gamma World spin-off and can only imagine the possibilities with a 4e OGL. But WotC is really pushing players into forgetting old editions ever existed, and I sadly agree it's a financially good idea for them. So I don't expect they'll acknowledge 4e exists any time soon.
4th edition UA-cam content suggestion - you go through, and review, your book collection. Would be useful to see what’s hot and what’s not for collectors of old 4th edition stuff.
Would be lovely to see the license opened up
I hope they just leave it alone. I play 4th edition. As it stands many, if not most DMs allow anything that is currently clearly "legal" for character builds. For more dubious stuff, DMs tend to exercise more control which is fine. Of course DMs always have the final say. If Wizards touches it however, there is no telling what they will errata in or out and who will feel compelled to follow that. If it's just a matter of an OGL, I'd be more open to that.
I recently bought the 4th ed core books and Drow stuff from eBay. Practically new, looks like it was never used. Good stuff.
I would publish 4e adventures & content if they did that.
4e has so much untapped potential. We got so few adventures for it.
One of my biggest dreams is that someone does for 4e what Gavin Norman did for B/X with OSE.
That would be awesome if they put 4e in Creative Commons - I'd be onboard ! Better still if they rekindle the version, going back to basics and using all the errata corrections they had built up just before folding 4e.
That's what they said they would do, but we are at least a year away from that. My fear is that they perhaps are waiting for people to forget so they don't have to do it.
I’ve been waiting for this since they said older editions were going to be added to Creative Commons
4e got me and my friends into playing dnd, and it many ways it is a more interesting tactical combat game than 5e with endless endless character options as well. But, it proved WOTC couldn't manage an online live gaming service.
Welcome back, I was just wondering how your rest was going last week!
I wasn't playing any TTRPG's during 4e's life cycle, but would love to see what could grow from it if there was an SRD to enable it.
I would love an OGL for 4E. The game is so easy to modify while keeping balance. I could go on about how much I liked the edition compared to 2E, 3E, and PF1. I did have some complaints about the edition, like needing more skills and having saving throw like 3E. But, both of those are easy to fix. There is the issue with theater of the mind combat, which is harder to do in 4th Edition. I think that one would be too long for a quick response. So, I will leave it at that.
Hi, i have the 4edition SRD if you are interested. Of course, it’s not under OGL.
It is strange they don't make versions of the adventures for all editions.
Opening up the 4e license would be so good. They went the opposite of the OGL and made it super restrictive. Such a bad idea. I think I have only ever seen one product that was made under the GSL.
I would not trust WotC/Hasbro to do me any favors, nor would I expect anything they offer to be adequate or sufficient for what we really need. I've lost faith in the company long ago when they effectively hamstrung my favorite version of the game and consequently buried all of its fans. We had been forced to fend for ourselves in the shadows without the digital support they insisted was necessary for the game to work, and prevented anyone else from taking up the work they no longer felt obligated to provide for the fans they made. What 4e (and D&D) really need is new stewardship. It needs people who are more passionate about the game and the system than funding their next kickstarter, indulging their stockholders, and catering to the whimpering cries of the largest common denominator within the niche fandom. Don't rely on them for anything! Don't rely on someone else to give you what you are not willing to provide for yourself. Figure out a way, and just do it.
13th age doesn't have any OGL or something policy? It's very similar to 4e
Its not that similar. Its full theater of mind while 4E was fully embracing the grid. Also non combat is much more freeform in 13th age. Its good but feels different
agreed
Ho yes !
I understand your hopes, but I hope they wont touch 4e at all.
But who knows, if enough people say what I'm about to say, the temptation for them might be too big to not do it.
If you look at what is currently going on in the scene, you can tell that 4e would be IMMEDIATELY POLITICIZED, it would IMMEDIATELY BECOME ANOTHER BATTLEFIELD.
There would be attacks on the game either to capture it for a particular ideological camp or to turn it into desecrated ground.
New "content" would thus easily end up being either an act of grave robbery, where parts of 4e's remains get lifted from its tomb, just to turn it into a mockery of itself, or simple desecration in an attempt to defame 4e.
Nothing of this is necessary, you have everything you need to make your own 4e content.
Let it rest in peace.
That is a fair point. I really don't like what they're doing to D&D in that sense. It's why WoTC is pretty unpopular these days, OGL debacle aside.
