  • In this video we take a look at a non working EGO 56V 650CFM Blower. Model LB6500. I bought this non working to save it from the landfill and see if we can give it new life and learn something along the journey. I admit round 1 defeat in this repair as we did not have the best luck replacing the Mosfets on this one. We made progress but the BLDC was getting a hard hit on start up and I did not like the direction this would go if the BLDC Motor let the smoke out! If interested I can add a part 2 to this video and show the Cheap BLDC Controller Retrofit similar to the 480 CFM Blower repair/retrofit video. Please comment below if you would like to go further. I bought one of these this a.m. and it won't blow. The new "safety" switch is the dumbest thing *ever*
    BTW When I called Service, I asked them if they've ever had these kind of complaints before an the guy said he'd *never* heard this kind of complaint before. Calling BS on that after seeing this video.
    They (EGO) hooked us with their well working first editions and just like every other POS multi-billion multi-national companies, the second+ editions are usually LEMONS. Should have stuck with STIHL. Thanks for letting me rant! This isn't my first rodeo, unfortunately. God bless & thanks

    I have a new 650 which doesn't work, battery fully charged. I was going to open the unit and after taking out a few screws thought I'd youtube and search fixing EGo 650. After watching the video decided to put the screws back in and look for a repairman. EGo sent a new one but wanted to see if the inoperable one could live.

    From a former 8.5 year USN Electronics Technician who has been fixing semiconductor manufacturing systems for the past 13 years, HELLUVA job on that diagnosis and repair! I love that you chased the circuit all the way through to the MOSFET pack, and that didn’t stop you. I never really picked up any 2M skills and my PCB soldering skills are experienced but still very amateur, so I would’ve taken my chances and stopped and looked for a broken one somewhere that I could’ve cannibalized the controller out of, which would’ve taken forever, but you pressed on through. VERY SHARP SIR. Great job. My kid left my blower on the back porch in the rain and now I have to dig into mine. Thanks for the video!!!

      I have heard of people having issues. I personally only had to call EGO once. My very first EGO pack repair video over 5 years ago was from that first warranty replacement and since they told me to keep and recycle the old pack it actually started the EGO repair videos. They were good to me. I will say the 2 things that I hear people complain about is now it seems harder to get them on the phone and you must have a record of receipt. I was lucky and I had registered mine and if you register it and take a photo of the receipt then you are good. Many people did not register and they did not keep up with the receipt. I am not great with that either, but usually on purchases over $200 I will keep receipts and try my best to take time to register. Hope yours works out good for you!

      Not imperative. I have had many still running without re potting the board. It will be best for sure to cover the board with a potting to help prevent corrosion. I believe use in the more humid areas or on foggy mornings can cause corrosion much quicker.

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  Рік тому

      Well it's not that crazy to me, It might work once, possibly. I would use a sealed motor for under water use. These are open air cooled motors and will not hold up long at all submerged if I had to guess?🏄💦⚡💥

      @@ThriftyToolShed thanks for the quick reply. I know the RC guys submerge their motors and I saw a guy recently who was using a cordless angle grinder and he submerged it totally several times. I can get one with a (probably) good motor / bad board for $50 which is a lot less than other options. I thought it would be funny if the whole assembly with the blower on it really provided a lot of thrust without extensive mods. I guys I could pot the outside with thermal conductive epoxy making it a "sealed"motor. An option I haven’t seen anyone offer for waterproof motors would be some type of positive pressure system that keeps water out by letting pressurized gas escape. Anyway, I might try it. Any thoughts on a controller? I’m a machinist by trade so all this electron stuff I’m learning on the fly

    Anyone here because their blower motor automatically turns on when the battery is inserted?
    This happened to my first 650. Had had it for a month, took back to Lowe's and they gave me a new one no questions. (Can return within 60 days no questions)
    The second blower I've had for a few months so I'll have to deal with Ego directly.
    Wondering if there is any quick solution to fix this.
    Both times it happened because I used the blower in rain.

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  2 роки тому

      Very interesting. I have not see that issue. Weird how you had both do the same thing. I have worked on many of these now and most of them have the opposite issue when they fail. The blower will not run at all. Typically a BLDC controller issue. With these being a BLDC of course the controller has to be putting out or controlling well to run the motor so it is hopefully just a switch issue. I would think the trigger switch must be shorted especially if it controls fine with speed adjustment?

    • @charleskarpiuk7330
      @charleskarpiuk7330 2 роки тому

      @@ThriftyToolShed Yes it is very weird that both did this.
      Slide the battery in, and it turns on. As if you're pressing the trigger just enough to turn it on. If I use the trigger the power increases like normal.
      If I move the dial to on, it increases the power incrementally. Again move the dial more and the power increases as normal.
      It was weird because today I left the blower under my client's porch for a few minutes, came back and it was running. I thought I must have moved the dial, but nope!
      Both days it was raining, and the blower was a little wet, but it wasn't like it was a downpour. And I keep it under cover when not actively using it. Also the temperature was pretty mild.
      And at the same time I was using my ego hedge trimmer all day in the rain, no issues.
      Also swapping different batteries doesn't resolve the problem.

The new one lasted 2 months and the exact same thing happened. I contacted Ego again and they sent me another one. So I know have 3 units. Typically it is the controller. Almost always the 30A fuse on the controller is blown. Only rarely does the fuse fix the problem. Most of the repairs by far have been shorted Mosfets as shown in my latest blower repair video as well as the 14" chainsaw repair video. On rare occasions it's the microcontroller on the controller itself. I have shown all these on videos.

      I can't answer much of any of those questions. I simply share what I find as we learn together. As far as the controller they range from $15 to $25. It usually depends on if I can find them on Amazon or eBay at the time. I am working on getting my hands on some 72V controllers, but it's been hard to get the sensor less in anything above 50V rating. The red ones that are 60V rated take the hall sensors. We have to buy the hall-less or sensor-less type.

      I highly advise purchasing the warranty, then keep returning it when it burns out because it does have power

      @@jackbenedett7961 purchased from ACE so it has a warranty. The problem is, EGO is in zero hurry to help customers with their warranty claim. Called it in a over a week ago (3 times) and my account still says “waiting”. Their service reps have been moved offshore so odds are good I’m hosed. They used to be a good company but profits and shareholders rule over true service.

      Bought my second one at Lowe's and purchased their warranty, so now when it quits, I'm going back for a replacement.

    Wondering about source for controller, which I'm sure you have already checked. I would like too see you finish the repair. My curiosity always gets the best of me. Great sleuthing on your part, thanks.

      I am testing with the same controller I used in the 480CFM blower. I have had to work through some issues but it's running it! Of course with 63V caps replacing the 50V rated cap.over 1000uf also. I will work on the video of the retrofit. Thanks for your comment!
