Thanks for the conversion. It's close enough. My grandmother used pinches, smidgen, her hands, and a tin cup. Her food was a sure great too! Trying to replicate her cooking is a challenge.
The problem I find is that many recipes use different methods of measuring, and do not always disclose what method they are using. Some will dip and scoop, and some will fluff up the flour and spoon it in the cup. And this often amounts to a big difference in how the recipe will turn out, especially with flour and things like brown sugar. It is one reason why professionals go with weight measurements. This is why weight recipes are more accurate than volume. I always appreciate any and all recipes where grams are used. If more of us Americans discovered the accuracy, consistency and speed of using a scale, they would convert immediately!
Darlene Rothenay well said! That’s why I also show how to measure if one chooses the volumetric system, but for example if the person sifted the flour before scooping it then the measurement would change massively
If you do not fluff your ingredients when said in end your recipe will be dense, maybe hard/though. The particles will be farther with more air in between. If you fluff/stir, your flour for example your end resulr is a more fluffy recipes. I mostly flufff/aeriate my flour, baking powder etc due to settling of the ingredients. That is the difference between fluffying or not. And it can even ruin your outcome if you do not do it.

iam a Danish baker we use scale in grams, the volume is not good to get the perfect bread, fx 1 cup of siftet flour has a low weight the same cup whit flour from a bag has a higer weight so com on USA go metric its so more easy to bake
Thank you so much for the info.. I was searching for cake flour recipe and all were telling cup and tablespoons.. I have cup but no spoons.. so glad I found this 👍
I followed a recipe that says 1 cup of flour(250ml it says, but on my scope also said 250ml). Then I use the kitchen scale, it was only 140g/ml. So which one should I follow? The 1 cup or add some more flour on the kitchen scale(I put it in a bowl)?
Hot Viral hello! One can measure out 1 cup of flour, cups are a measure of volume and so are millilitres. Now given the flour’s density then 1cup flour=250ml flour Maybe your scale can do that but if you want to use a weight measure (grams) then no worries, they are all equivalent: 1cup flour=250ml flour = 128g flour Hope it helps!

Hii I have a question which 1 cup shall I use for 30 grams of cereals the k Kellogg’s special berries cereal I am soo confused for long time and trynna to find out and can I use a small bowl the small rice 🍚 one for that and if spoons then how many I am trying to diet but don’t know how to sort out this 30 grams 1 serving thing ? 🙏🏻

I have tried conversion charts but even they differ one from the other. Why wouldn't we rather have accurate measures all the time for good results, you can always get away with adding a few more chocolate chips or a bit more or less of dried fruits long as the basic ingredients are right.Cups are too hitty miss and Aussie cups different from American cups, give us a break.I sadly dismiss any recipes measured in cups and as for a tbls measure of butter what kind of measure is that, do you melt it? Measure by weight on a scale and it's correct all the time.
I hear ya! The butter thing is maybe an American thing, you see the butter sticks with tablespoon markings so if you need a tbsp of butter you just cut through the mark, and the sticks are themselves exactly 1/2 cup. What I found to be the worst measurement is "sticks" of butter, that doesnt translate well at all
I only wish that in recipes they would write down how many grams and cups you need. Not one or the other. I am European we don’t use measuring cups and when I saw a recipe with cups ... I was lost
Hi i'm genuinely confused like for example in the white sugar. It said one cup but why it is not full and leveled up to the top of one cup and it just filled the cup with sugar only just before it reaches the top?? What is it for but in the flour it was leveled at the very top? Thank you! 😵😅🙂
There isn’t really, I think it’s a letter of preference and quality, i check that the cup is really giving me the right volume I prefer the metal cups but plastic measuring spoons 😊

So glad to have found your video as I have had many problems before using the cups finding that the dough was too wet not enough flour or dough too tough too much flour. Just subscribed. Hi there and welcome! About the flour question, unless you are dealing with something very different (in terms of coarseness) than plain wheat flour then the measurement should be ok, I mainly use bread flour, pastry flour and all-purpose flour and I find the conversion works Also, I never sift the flour before measuring it because this would mean you get less weight per cup as youve just added air when you sifted :) hope it helps!
@@BakingNicky Thanking you so very much for answering and explaining. I shall just use your measures for the flour 128 grams for the cup. Sometimes others give different 14Ograms and I5OGrams but for me I shall use yours. I meant did you like to shift the flour after measuring to make it lighter in texture before baking before you added your other ingredients. For the water I can see where I have been making the mistake and always been weighing 250 Grams=25O ml and I noticed that you use 24OGrams for a cup of water or milk. Raymond Gimay ah I see, I usually only sift the flour if the pack has been opened for a while (tends to clump up as it picks up humidity) and I definitely sift it when making airy things like cakes and macarons 😊
Great video! That said, I don't understand why you did not level off the top when you measured out the granulated sugar. I level my measuring cup off and it does weigh 200 grams, which is the international standard weight given for a full, level cup of sugar. Right off the bat, it appeared that your scale was off or your measuring vessels were not accurate, because of how you demonstrated filling up the cups. Other than that minor nitpick, this was an excellent video and I thank you for taking the time to demonstrate how to convert measurements to weights.
Hello there, thanks for your comments let me try to add a few thoughts that came to mind :) I think you make a good point, to be consistent one should level off even coarser ingredients like sugar! One question for anyone out there. I notice a lot of US conversions say 1 cup of water is 236 ml or how she has it 240 ml/245 g. In the metric system, 1 liter is a 1000 ml, and 1 liter of water weighs 1 kg or 1000 grams, the numbers don't add up. I think people are measuring from the outside of the glass measuring cup at eye level, but that doesn't seem to be accurate. Any thoughts?
Yeah this is because you’re thinking of a metric cup, a volume ‘US’ cup (I’m focusing on cups from the US system in this video ) is a cup that weighs exactly 8oz Which is slightly less than a metric cup which is 250ml Hope this helps!
When I use a recipe book I first look to see where it was printed, U.S. cup differs from u k differs from Aus. Guess that's why metric is becoming the standard.
hello! the problem is there is no rule spoon is a volumetric measure and grams a weight so its the same issue as cups in the end it depends on the ingredient (i do have some tsp measurements in this video)

What is 110 grams for flour and white sugar. I haven't got a scale. Sorry I'm old and need help.😟
Yeah this is because you’re thinking of a metric cup, a volume ‘US’ cup (I’m focusing on cups from the US system in this video ) is a cup that weighs exactly 8oz Which is slightly less than a metric cup which is 250ml
Hope this helps!
