The only reason international teams stand a chance is because of their NBA players. If it was champion vs champion then all the international NBA players would remain with their NBA teams.

The best American NBA player (based on MVP votes) is Tatum and he isn't even the best player on his own team. Top 5 players international plus American doesn’t provide quality basketball should = American losing the Olympics. So far it has = American dominance. The lack of NBA talent outside America is evident. Jokic isn’t reflective of Serbian basketball. Giannis isn’t reflective of Greek basketball. Luka couldn’t even make the Olympics with his country. Shai G. played his formative years (high school) in USA. He’s not reflective of Canadian bball. These exceptions prove the rule. These players are exceptions not the norm.

A 7 game series every 4 years would be good
There too many injuries in basketball to sustain an international 7 game series plus the NBA games plus the other countries have their overseas leagues too.
The model Chris is talking about already exists in football. You win your national league and play a champions league which is continental, winners of that play in the club world cup. Americans just dont believe different pro leagues of the same sport can co exist without one taking from the other, which is wierd.

There already is a “World championship” for basketball, it’s the FIBA World Cup, just like soccer/football has the FIFA World Cup as the sport’s world championship. If players want to be called World champions, that’s the tournament they need to participate in, and if they don’t participate and would rather be doing something else, then that’s on them. Perhaps there’s some guy just sitting on his couch somewhere who’s the fastest sprinter in the world, but if he doesn’t actually go participate in the world championships for Track and Field, then he’s not getting that title. Just because he “could” win doesn’t make him the World Champion.
Why not send our champs vs their champs, would be fun to watch

The NBA should invite EuroLeague teams to the NBA Cup. Problem solved.
Damn that’s the smartest idea I heard.
Use that to host pro league champs from around the world and that would be for the title of world champs and the NBA finals would be for NBA Champs.
It would incentivize good teams to take that tournament seriously and all the teams should be fairly fresh and healthy to give it their all.
And it would be interesting if other teams held the world champion while the NBA champs was another team kind of like wrestling or boxing where they would want to “Unify the Championship “

If its a champions league contest, than sure that contest would need its standard rule but if its own leagues, than no. the different court dimensions, ball size and time length for games along with amount of timeouts you can call puts a different twist to the type of basketball.
Rob G is right and Noah Lyles is clueless about basketball. The best players on every Olympics team are in the NBA and the teams with the best NBA players have gotten furthest in this tournament. It's ridiculous to think the Celtics would do anything other than smash the Euro league champs.

They have the model required in football with the Champions League. Also they used to have the McDonald's Championship, where the champion CLUB teams would play in a tournament.
This is a semantics debate. There is no doubt the NBA Champion is the best basketball team in the world, don’t think Lyles would even deny that. The NBA is however a national (or two country, counting Canada) league. For Americans best in the world = World Champion, while in Europe & globally it does not.
The best way to explain this is football (soccer). In football, the best team in the world is typically the team that wins the UEFA Champions League (best team in Europe) but they would still only ever refer to themselves as the Champions of Europe. Only after winning the Club World Cup, would that team refer to themselves as World Champion.
So it’s just down to however you want to interpret the meaning of World Champion.
This is not semantics, you can’t be champion of the world in a national league. Had the nba been an international league that would be much different. The problem is people understanding terms and verbiage. No one is denying the NBA is the best league in the world. It’s just you cannot give yourself a false title base off of feeling or opinion.

So the only way to make it competetive is to put one arm around our backs by making just the NBA champs play when the rest of the countries plays their entire best players. We just send a team that may have only 1 or 2 of the top US players instead? All that just to prove whats already a given that, the US runs basketball still and for quite some time.
Football (European soccer) has the best club teams playing there in the Champions League (CL), teams from all over Europe..The winner of that plays in the Club World Cup to claim world champion status..That doesn't take away anything from the prestige the CL still has, which is more than the CWC..And the European champions tend to win that more often than not..
I think the problem is NBA champs have labeled themselves World champs so long it's scary to think they might get beat and not.have that claim to guys like Chris Broussard..

What Chris wants is what they have in European Futbol.... Its called champions league. At the moment USA would win a champions league/Club world cup type contest but give other countries in Africa, Europe and South America time to make their leagues and develop players for a 20 to 25 year time span, USA would no longer be dominant in basketball.
An NBA team winning a world championship tournament is a club world championship.
You need win at the international level (country vs country) to be a world champion. That's the rule for all other sports so why is it different for basket ball?

Best way would be for the previous season's NBA champion to get the last week of their preseason replaced by a best of 3 series against the winner of a separate tournament. Ie. European champ vs Asian champ etc. winner of that tournament plays the NBA champ in the US for the world title

I wish the NBA would work with the basketball leagues and do something like the Champions League. You can take the top 4 NBA teams (the teams in the conference finals) and top 4 teams of the Euro League and have them play in tournament. We do not need to standardize rules. In fact it will be great to have different leagues to have different rules, ball size, court dimensions and length of games. That way we get different team constructions and "Home court advantage" will have meaning in sport and not the referee favoring you which that's what the secret meaning is. Different brand of basketball for everyone. Those that like 3 pointers, those that hate it, those that like full zone, those that want 0 zone etc. See players in different circumstances. But yes a champions league/Club world cup should operate on FIBA Standard rules but individual leagues can run their own game rules.

Martin is underrating the Euroleague teams. They've already beaten NBA teams in recent exhibitions. An NBA vs. Euroleague tourney could blow up in the NBA's face as soon as they lose some games or a tourney final. The gap b/w NBA and Euroleague is nowhere near the gap b/w Team USA and the other nat'l squads.

what is Weiss talking about? you come up playing together its easier to plug you in a system and the team could gel plus your familiar with each other game playing together.
Everybody knows that the USA has the better team, but there used to be 1maybe 2 non american in the top 10 players, now it is at least half. You still have more talent, especially at the guard positions. But also, you have to understand that FIBA basketball is totally different, the intensity, the toughness needed, the crowd, you only see that in some playoff games. Some playerss in Europe are not skilled enough for the NBA but they are so tough, they become elite in FIBA basket. Schroeder is the best example. Just ask Lu Dort or Dillon Brooks how it feels to play Yabusele and Lessort, they are known to be tough in the NBA but just got bullied in the Olympics.
Its about legitimacy, yeah the NBA champ would win 9 times out of 10 but then you can actually claim being world champions, It is what it is.
Why does that matter? You don’t see the World Series champion playing the Japanese champion.

In soccer the Champions league is the most important club tournament of the year but its only played in Europe and you don’t see the winners claim to be “World champions” they wait until the following year when they play the South American champion even though they always win.

Sloukas and Lessort vs Tatum and Brown... If you listen to Lyles he was not questioning the quality of the leuge, just stating the fact that it is a domestic competition and the arrogance of calling it's champion, the world champion. The reaction from NBA players kind of just proved his point. To day there is no real money in European club basketball, they constantly face financial trouble and some clubs are kept alive by the good will of the football section. So talent wise, the gap is astronimical, why you wanna go up against that? Euro rules and courts have made the games intressting. But why face players cut from the NBA?

If other countries where to start their leagues, nba will want to takevover those leagues since they do not want a upstart alternative due to the fact there are a segment of fans not happy with their product at this time. The two most important things needed in basketball in order to compete are Height and Wingspan. After that all you need are Skills and IQ. Athleticism is Vastly overrated. Jokic the best player in the NBA in 2024 cannot jump over a thin paper, cannot out run a turtle vertically or horizontally but he has height 6'11, wingspan 7'3 put together with skills which are dribbling, shooting, passing and High IQ when to utilize said skill set. Thats it!
The top ten countries with tallest people by average height as of 2024 are the following ranked tallest to shortest. I also listed the countries population next to them.
1 Netherlands 18M
2 Montenegro 700K
3 Estonia 1.5M
4 Denmark 6M
5 Iceland 400K
6 Latvia 2M
7 Bosnia and Herzegovina 3.5M
8 Czech Republic 11M
9 Serbia where Jokic is from 8M
10 Lithuania 3M has Jonas Valančiūnas who beat the USA C team in the 2023 FIBA World Cup only to lose to Germany in the Final. Jonas was the only NBA player on that team
none of these countries take basketball seriously except for maybe Serbia and Lithuania. You cannot tell me if the countries I listed above were to have a basketball system similar to how Europe has its sports academy and Pyramid league system based on merit, that they would not challenge/beat the USA in basketball even with its lower population compared to USA. Same for African countries as well.
So Lithuania a country of 3M with only 1 nba player was able to beat USA top to bottom nba roster albeit being its "C Team". 3M vs 330M. Thats pretty impressive
Serbia a country of 8M was able to produce the best Basketball player vs a country of 330M that being the USA. Thats more impressive.

You guys have to do more research on these topics before you roll them out on your show. Firstly the Euroleague is already an international tournament. Its not a league in the way US fans and media define league. Its more like the NBA in season tournament. Every country has their own domestic league with their own championship so figuring that out would be messy and without adding multiple European clubs there wouldn`t be enough teams to make a tournament. The NBL out of Australia is the only league outside Europe that could field a team that would have a chance to beat a bottom tier NBA team. All of those league best players play for NBA teams. Every year for the past decade or so international teams play NBA teams in the pre-season... Go look at the results.
Did the league done it in the 90s? Where the Bulls the eventual champs vs euroleague. McDonald's championship?

First The BOSTON CELTICS ARE The world Champs NOT Team USA so the Boston Celtics would need to play other pro champ teams in the world.

SECOND it would be the champs from other leagues like euroleague it would NOT be All Star teams on either side.

It will be better for the sport of Basketball. Imagine having England win all FIFA Futbol World Cups and Olympics with no serious challengers and when they lose its because of the team and not the opponent? I do not think futbol would be the #1 sport it is today. That is basically what the USA is in Basketball. Thus why Basketball remains number 2 sport in the world and in some countries not even top ten.
The best players from Europe go to the NBA so how would they ever beat an NBA team smh
