Provia Landscapes: Metering, Filters and Slides

- I took my Pentax 67 to the North Cornish Coast near Bedruthan steps to take some slides and talk about filters and metering. I was a bit late leaving but I got there just in time to take a few shots I'm happy with.
“The light is falling really fast.”
(Takes another 7 minutes before taking the first shot.)
Alex S. I’ve given up on 2-3 videos because of rapidly changing light and my inability to both talk to camera and properly take images, the dream is long stable predictable light that lets me mess around
First take the photo than do the video. It's all in the editing
Great photographs of beautiful light.
Awesome work! Thank you for taking the time and effort to share.
What a great video! This step by step sharing really helped me and also was so inspirational. I am waiting for my light meter to arrive. And away I go to mimic you! ))) Thanks Jonathan! )))
Pretty nice view! I really enjoy your videos and your photos, keep up the good work!
Thanks very much 🙏🏻
amazing content and effort, love it man!
Great video! Really nice photos too!
Pentax 6x7 and Provia is fast becoming my favourite combination for nature shots. I have both the 55mm and the 45mm, and they are both great lenses for shooting high detail slide film. I just wish they'd reintroduce the Provia 400F though. Still super bummed out about the discontinuation of that one.
#bringbacktheprovia400
I like that you talked about the Reciprocity app, then ignored it. Then said you should've done an exposure basically what the app said 😂
Aha I thought I'd keep it in for honesty's sake. I explained my reasoning in the reply to @bwvids below but basically I added exposure comp twice due to the falling light. The real mistake came when I said 'ehhh it's between f11 and f16' then chose f11. But yeah - wish I'd done 8s!
what blew my mind was how needed that gradient filter was. I was for sure thinking the sky would come out underexposed
Recently discovered your channel after finding an increasing interest in shooting analog. Have really enjoyed watching your videos! Very relaxed vibe and super interesting content. You are great in front of the camera. Looking forward to seeing you post more!
Also, these recent videos are doing nothing to help my lust for the p67 :P
Great episode! I'm on the hunt for a Pentax 67 now. Provia sure looks good on 6x7 slides!
well worth the price! i absolutely love my pentax. paid 1k for it lmao
such a nice video, the content of your channel is really interesting, keep up the good work!
Thanks 🙌🏻
Good episode as always! In this particular case I like much more the rendering of your video camera than that of the film.
I quite like the image you present at the time mark 15:18. True, the horizon at the left side of the image is blown out. But this can easily be fixed in post process.
I really like how you share your thoughts before taking the pictures. The Shots you took look amazing :-)
Provia 100F is my favorite colour film by far, we'll see what the new Ektachrome is like.
Great info, thanks for sharing. So nice pictures :) and btw always take the lens off first before you take the prism with light meter off or you are running the risk of breaking the aperture coupling chain.
you can tell that the Portra has more latitude especially In the shadow detail vs the Provia which has some mud in the shadows but the saturation is so nice on the Provia.
Take the bloody picture, mate.
Beautiful imagery as usual
Thanks 🙌🏻
Wow, I can't believe how this channel is not more popular! Hello there! I am a Foveon sensor-shooter and have high respect for analog photographers. I really wonder if your medium format really has higher printing resolution than a Sigma Quattro H. I do love your Pentax 67! I am really hoping you could tell me why the analog medium format is so much better. - The digital professionals look like children compared to proper analog photography. If you are interested I could send you some Foveon pictures to compare resolution with your scanned pictures! :)
Hi, noticed you are using the same spot meter that I have just purchased. Couldn't find anything on UA-cam for film photographers explaining how this meter works and how to get the best out of it. Would you be up for doing a vid on it. I'm sure it would be useful to others with similar meters and those looking to up their analogue game. Cheers
Great explanation 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Great video. I know first hand that a lot of effort went into this. You need a videography buddy to help you out. It was interesting to see that Portra and Provia comparison side by side. Keep it up!
What tripod are you using? Mine is a little overwhelmed when i try to make a vertical image with the 67.
Great video!
I'll be honest, I liked the Portra much more. While the sky wasn't as blue as the Provia, I think the creamy, warm sky works better with the lighting on the rocks at golden hour. I also found the shadows in the Provia much too dark
Currently have an RB67 but tempted to jump to a P67....worth the jump?
@12:44 you check reciprocity, though your app shows Provia 8” - don’t know why you overexposed at 15” and 30”. Acros and Provia have the SAME reciprocity characteristics, i.e. hardly any additional time need for up to 2 minute exposure.
Couple of things at play but mainly just a miscalculation.
When I said ‘could do with a slight push’ I wasn’t referring to the whole scene, just the area of water that I spot metered. I wanted to take the water from midtone to midtone+1. My thinking was that the falling light and the grad would protect the sky. The other problem was that I rounded ‘between f16 and f11’ to f11, this combined with the compensation on the water led to me doing ‘midtones+1’ twice on the water. I wish I’d shot 1/8 instead of the 1/30 bracket but the light was fading fast so it felt like underexposure would become an issue. (Provia is fine for reciprocity but I wanted to protect people using negatives in case they watched this then borked a roll of Portra)
honestly I think 15 was awesome.
I quite like Provia. My in-camera meter didn't screw it up, either.
@6:55 I like that portra more :)
Ive watched a couple of your more recent vids, I see you use the hasselblad , have you ditched the 67 ?
I switched from the 6x7 to a hasselblad 503cx
@@JonathanNotley why ? I want both !!
good stuff as usual, it's nice to see these vlog style, going out, explaining how and why you take a picture. one question: how did you meter for the sunset shot? did you used grad filter?
Thanks! Do you mean the handheld shot at 16:16? I probably spot metered an area of water, perhaps some of the low sky.
I would have anxiety setting up my tripod there, imagine if a gust of wind came, and blew the camera to kingdom come
Loved the images and the commentary as usual. One question what spot meter are you using? Thanks again.
It’s a Minolta spot meter ‘F’
Jonathan thanks for the info mate.
1s at F22 would've granted you 1.34m - infinity in focus. (the shot at 5min) Did you use 1/15th to capture the waves?
Yes, it was a compromise between motion blur and DoF
What app did you use when you take a long exposure?
Nice.
Cual es la aplicacion que has usado en el movil para el tiempo???
Se llama en Ingles "Reciprocity Timer" y lo encontré en la tienda de aplicaciones ios
Great video thank! What is the name of the app?
Hi Jonathan! I have the pentax 6x7 with the same lenses you have. I used provia few days ago in a sunset landscape. All photos were underexposed.😣😣 I guess I didnt use the reciprocity in long exposures jajaja. Thanks very much. Very good video indeed. Whats the name of the reciprocity app?
“Reciprocity timer” is the app I use :)
@@JonathanNotley i cant find it. Maybe you use iphone...
I am pretty sure your problem is not caused by reciprocity failure. Provia only requires 1/3 of a stop compensation if exposed over 4 minutes! and nobody exposes their film over 4 minutes in sunset unless a big stopper is used.
@@fangxusun1723 Thank you, this weekend I am going to use provia again. The autum in the Pirineos is a good chance to try.
Hey man, where can I find the polarizer you were using for the 55mm 3.5? Killer video!
Thanks! I use a “Lee Filters 105mm” polariser, it screws on to my filter holder so I can use it with everything
@@JonathanNotley i really don't understand how is work :( i wish to have a filter for my 45mm f4 pentax lens, and i really don't have any ideea how i can attach a filter to it.. so you say lee 105mm can be attached to any mount??
You can get adapter rings to put the lee system on almost any lens
@@JonathanNotley thanks 🙏 ❤ really appreciate!!!
@@JonathanNotley the adapter ring, is standard or wide angle? And what kind of shutter cable is fit to 6x7 camera?
What Spot Meter are you Using dude?
It’s a Minolta spot meter F
Mi dare not choice that tripods setup for The Pentax 67, find a Linholf tripod and a bogen 3047 head make life easier light weight and sturdy
Do you project?
Both Portra400 shots are amazing! Provia is meh...
Very confusing way of determining exposure. I watch this video three times to figure out what you're doing. Couldn't get it..may it's me..when making a video explaining how to meter to whatever film, and how to use filters, you need to speak slowly so people can follow your steps.
Just take the photo already! Geez.
6:55 Portra>Provia
Why do you do a video blog about traditional photography, when in post-production you do artificially on a vintage film. It blurs the differences between digital and analog film and looks artificial and silly.
Colour balancing film scans has been a thing since enlargers?
Great video thank! What is the name of the app?
"Reciprocity timer", it's in the iOS store with a red logo
