The KTM 790 Adventure R is a wonderful machine bringing new capability to adventure bikes. However it is not without its little issues. These are some of my initial complaints.
I forgot to mention in the video, also:
    -stock skidplate should be stronger/thicker
-mirrors are kind of ugly and big
-shock is too close to the catalytic converter
I have upcoming videos on how to address a lot of these issues.
Let me know what your complaints are with the 790 and what KTM could have done better.

I went thru the same issues as you did on my 2019 790 R.
Wind. Puig touring screen solved it. But I still use the short screen for short trips , commutes and off road
Shock. Completely failed after about 1500 miles. I asked KTM South Africa for for an upgrade to Xplor Pro and paid the difference. So the failure was an opportunity to upgrade for the cost of the difference rather than a whole new shock.
Cluth. I may get the camel lever.
Fuel gauge. I the consumption figure on the computer and do quick mental maths to check when to refill. Mostly I fill up after 200 Miles/ 320 kms.
I have ordered a seat concept seat for touring. I like the standard seat for everyday use and off road. But after 2 or 3 hours on a highway you'll think of better options.
Looking forward to more videos about the 790.

I can't get over the difference with the Camel clutch piece. A friend just put it on and it's literally 1 finger clutch. Definitely piece #1 you should get.
His Outback Motortek engine guards are wicked, but I've seen videos on here of guys smoking the fuel tank guards into rocks without damage.
He has touratech mirrors that I really liked and we are all Doubletake fanboys so........
I'm not sure who makes it but he did have a tower brace out of aluminum, apparently the tower is very poorly connected and there is potential to have severe damage to the tower if left unbraced. He was saying the attachment setup is one of the worst he's seen for potential damage.
My questions for you @Big Rock Moto:
You just came from the AT/790R dilemma.
Are you happy you stuck with the 790 for the reasons you mention over the 2020 or has actually owning and seeing some flaws pushed you back towards the AT - even an older year.. Just a simple yes/no, just after your quick subjective opin. Every comment you made I completely agree with for both bikes.
Can you expand on the longer on road trips on the 790 compared to the AT. I've taken both bikes out now and the AT is definitely smoother/more refined on road engine wise, but is the engine on the 790 becoming an issue at all for you comfort wise on lengthier road trips? Typically I get the dumb response of if I want a nice on road bike buy a goldwing....... from your videos so far I know you get what I'm asking.
I cant pull the trigger on the 790 yet simply because of reliability fears which I will need to just accept and the potential for it to not be a good bike for a 300+ mile road section. Hoping your opinion will push things over the edge and I can get one in the garage.
      thanks!!! great content btw.

Excellent, non-biased review--no bike is perfect just like no car is perfect, and you are doing no more than pointing out what your experiences have been with the bike, that's all, so no need to apologize because you are in no way a hater (you bought the bike after all!!), although I get why you do as there are so many trolls out there. I would think the vast majority of subscribers will appreciate you pointing out what your experiences are to help them better decide if they want to buy this bike. That's why this content is so valuable, as living with the bike day in and day out is a lot different than a short test ride--it is a tortured analogy but it is like going somewhere on vacation and loving it for a few days versus relocating to the same spot and actually living/working there. Good job and well presented!

    1. Brakes are brilliant, its just a name and would ramp the cost of the bike up. 2. The buffeting isn't great but it only get noticeable at 70 mph +. You get used to it and I can happily ride for an hour or so at 80 mph without feeling fatigued. 3. I think your shock is either set up wrong or failing. For touring the givi airflow screen does the job for me (189cm). The biggest annoyance for me is the jerkiness of the engine at low speed/low rev, when driving to town or in heavy traffic.

  • @andriisudiev
    @andriisudiev 3 роки тому +4

The stock shock has too much "low speed" dumping, that why it feels harshy in initial stroke. Also on the dyno - shock has degressive curve.
First attempt - made it linear and much softer, still harshy, but much better. Second attempt coming soon.
And stock tire is not softest tire)
After 990 adv - 790 suspension is far from comfortable

    • @jonboy602
      @jonboy602 3 роки тому +1

That's high speed damping, not low speed. High speed is what affects the wheel hitting a bump, when it needs to move quickly to absorb it. Low speed damping is what affects handling on a smooth road, when weight transitions compress the springs.

Thanks for the vid! Great to have some of the issues I have also felt openly discussed. My rear shock has softened up nicely after 4000km. I do get quite a bit of noise from the clutch basket though when in neutral. When the clutch lever is pulled in the noise disappears, but with clutch lever is released and the bike is in neutral the clutch basket has a decent rattle/knock going on. Doesn't seem to impact on performance but wondering if you experience the same...Also there is some slow speed, low rpm, stuttering which I think may be due to fuelling from the research i've done...Cheers again!

What strikes me as a negative is to add cruise control you have to replace the whole left control stack to add the button. Maybe dealers can order it from the factory that way but seems like dealer add on and pain in the ass to add. Should just come standard. That’s high spec suspension so have someone set the bike up for you because your weight is not outside it’s range. Yes we could do it ourselves but it’s just not worth the time if you have a pro nearby to do it

I have a 790 rally, with even stiffer suspension and I've gone up three spring weights. 790 adv r is for aggressive riding. maybe you should got a tenere 700 or africa twin. they have much softer suspension. thank goodness for ktm's aggressive suspension. I have nearly 6k miles on the rally and I love it. she rips. try hand guard mirrors, like rottweiler crg kit, to eliminate
educe buffeting. get two piece adv s seats and send to Sargent cycle to rebuild. clutch, fuel gauge are not issues for me. we get to feel grateful for what we have or focus and complain about what we lack. the bike is badass.

  • @stevecade857

I also found the suspension harsh as standard and didn't feel as plush as I'd expect from long travel quality units especially the rear. Back off on the high speed compression damping a bit. That fixes it. (I weigh 92 kg). I couldn't care less who's name is on the brakes as long as they work well and those KTM ones work really well. I hate the aftermarket feel of the heated grips. The extra button to operate them is ridiculous and ugly. Integrating its operation into the info controls and dash would of been so much better. Why does an off-road biased adv bike have such a small sidestand footprint? I suffer a lot of buffeting over 65 mph and am still looking to get a small deflector but finding one the right size and tint is proving tricky. Even with the bikes issues it's a fantastic machine and best in class. Now if the T7 had better suspension.............

It seems like KTM did a pretty good job right out of the box. I've heard of cooling problems. Evidently you haven't had any. I have heard of some water retention problems with the display, codgerbiker has had constant problems with his. Re the quick shifter, how does it go on rougher terrain if you just accidentally touch the lever? Every dirt bike I have owned has required a screen or a modified screen to cut down the wind effects. I have had some success in using the “Dakar” screen from Parabrisas screens in Argentina on a BMW Xchallenge, DR650 and KTM500EXCF. Re the 48 Explor forks, I had a race tech kit fitted to my EXCF which dramatically improved them and converted them to the conventional adjustment at the top and bottom rather than the silly compression on one leg and rebound on the other.

With the shield in the low position the air flow is pretty smooth for me, in the high position - lousy. Brakes? Ha ha, I ride a DR650 too, the KTM brakes are like Brembo M50's to me! The fuel gauge does not bother me at all, I have to use the trip odo on my DR to figure out about how much fuel is left. The clutch...yea, I put the Camel part on it...perfect now. I too find the rear shock a bit harsh; I weigh 170 and find the spring rate a bit too firm and the high speed damping too firm, even in their lightest settings, whereas the rebound and low speed damping are fine. I have a Cogent on my DR that is superb. It seems Cody and Chris like a firm shock for really aggressive riding where it does work well as is. I find the fork perfect/excellent. Nit picks for me: I would like the pegs lower a 1/2 in. and forward 1 in., the grips are too small dia. and hard (I like Progrip 714's), the low speed fueling is jerky due to EPA reqs. which I'm seeking a solution for. The biggest complaint I've had was that my bike spent 7 weeks at the dealer waiting to get faulty brake switches changed out. It's sorted now. Overall the bike is really awesome though and a keeper for a long time!

Just what you think you wanted to address or think maybe what you would have liked to have had. But nope, people still need to get in here talking about your dislikes and how you are complaining 😂😂. Great video and nice job letting people know what's up. 👍

Hi, really like your review videos, they are brutally honest which is what we want to hear to make informed decisions. I am a chronic BMW guy but I am looking for a lighter bike option as I have found the 1200 GS can be difficult due to its weight. Of course ‘taste is in the eye of the Beer holder’ right lol, but I struggle with the fact that ‘styling and colouring’ can be so overdone and ‘glaringly dazzling’ on some brands of bike. I’de be a liar if I said styling does’nt matter but it gets to the point where a ‘mechanically superior’ bike brand gets ‘bumped’ because it is just plain ‘tacky’ ! I thought KTM was ‘on point’ with its original 640 and 990, what happened ? Cheers.

I have ridden my 790 R for 7500 ks, at speeds up to 150 kph. Zero buffeting but I installed a Rade Garage windscreen and totally eliminated the buffeting and great protection. I also ride with a MX style helmet with a sun beak and it no issue after installing the screen. Love the bike and I have owned a dozen various bike from MX up to a GSAs and this bike is not perfect but it ticks all the boxes. Cheesy little things like the heated grip switch, but duh it`s less than half the price of my GSA and I have way more fun with it. I'm going through your videos now, and I have to say how much I appreciate your honest and detailed reviews. I'm glad you go through so many bikes because it's really helpful to the rest of us. xD Anyway, I I have a 2019 KTM Enduro R and it was the worst purchase I ever made in motorcycling. From the minute I rode it off the lot to my 800 mile adventure I had problems. Mostly the darn thing was insanely back breaking harsh, and the buzz in the front handlebars was beyond bad. I hated the bike and kept looking at my DRZ in my garage and realizing the mistake I made. Long story short, after about 1500 in mods (handlebar + isolaters, seat etc) the bike was still bad. Then I said screw it and busted out my tools and adjusted the suspension...WAY better. Then after 2000 miles, the motor became far less buzzy. Now im about 2600 miles in and the bike is great! It's the first vehicle I have purchased that actually did need to "break in." It still gets false neutrals like crazy though and the quick shifter is near worthless. But at least I can ride it now and not hate it. :)

There will never be a perfect bike straight off the showroom floor and your honest review is better than what most MotorMag's are going to tell us. So good job! I do think KTM got the truly important things right. I have added the Puig wind deflector and it solved my buffeting problems. The KTM heated grips are reasonably priced and work well, but the handlebar switch is very lame and the led's are hard to see. I love the cruise control module though - just awesome. I added the Camel ADV rear shock heat guard and the head light assembly stiffener. They must be working since the issue they address has not occurred. I run the comfort settings on my bike as well. So does Chris Birch btw. Cheers
