I've worked in the countryside virtually all my life, mostly in wildlife management; my particular forte is countryside law. Whilst the video above is well presented in a clear format, there is a growing tendency with some presenters to portray 'wild camping' as a sort of sterile version of what it really should be.
The definitions of stealth camping, wild camping and indeed ordinary camping if I can use that term are all too often mixed up. I personally don't believe that wild camping is wild camping if one believes one cannot light and use a fire as part of the experience. Even stealth camping can involve a covert fire for heating/cooking etc.
There is a lot of references out there to conducting oneself in certain manners and most of that info' is good advice, but is often given 'cast in stone', and it simply isnt so. I'm actually not aware of any enforceable rules and regulations about camping in any form beyond odd bye-laws on council owned land. Even the likes of SSSIs etc.
Unless camping consent is secured, all camping is civil trespass. The only other trespass in Britain is Statutory Trespass (Government property, utilities, railways etc). Only this latter can be prosecuted, leaving the old Trespassers will be Prosecuted signs worthless on private (non-statutory land).
As such, you can actually camp where you wish. It is up to the land owner to confront you and request that you leave. In theory you should, but if you refuse, there is virtually nothing that land owner can do. It isn't even a Police matter. Trespassing is a civil wrong, a tort and under Common Law in Britain (since Magna Carta), camping has been associated with vagrancy laws. Vagrants could remain within a parish for no longer than 14 days and that is why for instance on the waterways, one cannot moor a boat in the same spot for more than 14 days.
Most rules and regulations that people mention are in fact guidelines, nothing more. Although in theory it is actually criminal damage to light a fire on the ground without the landowner's consent as burning the turf would be a criminal act, a safe, small fire is regarded as ancilliary to wild camping and only the most cantankerous landowner in the 21st century would make an issue of it. I say on the ground for good reason as there is a point to the frequent rule on private camping sites about the height of a BBQ or fire pit off the ground! In Scotland you can camp where you like. Fires on the ground however must have the consent of the landowner.
There is a fair bit of myth and old wive's tales surrounding camping, but at the day's end, it is the law which counts, not convention or myth. If there is a law against something then that is the case. If there is not, campers should not let the unfounded belief there is spoil their enjoyment of what is left of wild places in Britain.

+StonecatWales Great comment. I'm so confused by the law in the UK and it really puts me off doing any camping as an adult. As a kid, I wouldn't have cared!

You should never be dumbed down or curtailed by the Law or convention. Exploit the circumstances. Manipulate them for your own end and enjoyment. :)

StonecatWales Very good points - glad some has empowered themselves, thanks for enlightening others.
Remember - council land / government property are PUBLIC land / propety as they are paid for by the public :-)

Comments here (and on other UA-cam channels) about open fires and law are interesting. Many are misguided, incorrect, or foolish so far as law and common-sense goes. Trespass is a civil law matter except on land where other conditions apply (such as Byelaws). For example, trespass on railway land is an offence for which arrest is likely and a court may issue a fine. Refuse to leave, and imprisonment is possible. Endanger life there, and life imprisonment is possible. The offence of, and penalty for trespass varies depending where it occurs and may be significant. Gathering wood or lighting fires is likely to consideration as criminal damage - let there be no doubt this applies everywhere in respect of law. If you take wood from trees or light a fire and either causes damage it can result in arrest, criminal conviction, and penalty. Imagine there's a tree on your lawn, someone you don't know comes along and without asking pitches a tent next to it, chops a bit of the tree off, makes a fire from it and scorches your lawn, and claims it's OK for them to do so because it's "bushcraft" or "wild-camping" - I doubt you would agree it's OK, nor does English law. I don't see why any landowner must accept anyone damaging it, and any claim it's OK if that damage is called bushcraft is ludicrous and no defence in law. Camp cooking does not require an open fire, wood, digging holes, scorched ground, axes, saws, or knives - use a camp-stove and a different fuel, and all that is avoided. Using open fires may contravene Byelaws put in place for good reason. Dartmoor is an example - wild-camping there is permitted over wide areas but subject to Byelaws. Again, there are penalties for contravention. Open fires are specifically prohibited and hundreds or thousands of acres harmed by fire have repeatedly demonstrated that is for good reason. Any suggestion that digging a fire-pit then filling it in is safe shows just how ignorant some people are, yet claim they're knowledgeable and good outdoors practitioners. It also underlines why Byelaws are necessary. Peat is common on Dartmoor, lighting a fire in a pit can more easily ignite it, and peat will burn unseen underground over a wide area for days before setting fire to surface vegetation. Twenty fire crews were needed to extinguish a fire on Dartmoor in January 2017 - and that's not the "dry" season! The earlier Chat Tor fire destroyed 1500 acres. Some of the forests are regularly harmed by bushcraft and "wild-camping" activity proudly put on UA-cam - presumably by folks who don't know what they're doing, have never seen a forest fire, and aren't aware how they can start. I have seen a chap burning wood from Black-a-Tor Copse despite an obvious notice-board identifying it as as a National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest - he told me he was doing "bushcraft". Really? Fines for criminal damage to SSSI's are up to £20,000 in a Magistrates Court, or unlimited in Crown Court. The landowner also has a legal duty to protect these areas - another reason why open fires may not be permitted in some places - why should a landowner risk a fine simply because someone else wants to light a fire on land they don't own? Laws may be dimly viewed but sometimes they're necessary to make up for a lack of knowledge or common-sense!

"Wild Camping" is a term unknown here in the States. There are a few items of equipment I prefer to what Mr. Johnson recommends.
I use a stainless steel tea pot to heat water. Titanium resists heat causing more fuel use. The weight difference is minimal.
1/3 of your hiking experience is in your tent.
There are inflatable pillows which makes for better comfort than rolled up clothes.
I recommend a lightweight two person tent. What you have then is room for yourself to easily sit up, move about and there is adequate room for all your gear.
A collapsible wash basin is most useful.

Wtf? Shitting in the woods and burning wood is unnatural and bad for the environment - but bringing a processed and canned gas supply and shitting in a plastic bag is normal?

i was shown, if you cant find rocks bury your pegs. use your trowel and remove 1"x1"x1" top soil, push your peg in and then put the soil over the top and compact. deeper for high winds. but make sure to keep the grass intact so you can leave with no trace.

Videos like this bring it home about the UK and how overcrowded we are, all these regulations for somebody to go camping, I am not denying the safety aspect, which is very good, and well worth mentioning, but it is the freedom to camp, that's the problem.
Like the gentleman says only make camp before night and break it down in the morning, meaning you're not allowed to stay in one area more than one day or should I say one night.
The space people have freely to camp, so they can be on their own, is getting smaller and smaller, in fact let's be honest it's non-existence, with more and more regulations.
I don't like camping with other people, I don't like being in a field crammed with 40 or more people with screaming kids running about, somebody playing music, or arguing in the next tent, or unruly children kicking footballs onto your tent or running around it, and with their parents having no ability control or teach their children manners, respect or good behaviour, I don't call that camping, I call that a prison camp.
But that's what we have in the UK, which goes by the name of camping.
Why is all this happening, because we live in a country with a landmass of just over 94,000 mi.², and the population is increasing alarmingly, and nobody wants to deal with it, or even talk about it, because nobody wants restrictions upon they endless multiplying.
But sooner or later before it's too late I hope?, you'll get the intelligence and courage to talk about it, instead of denying it because you don't have the mental ability to deal with the subject.
Our natural countryside is almost disappeared, less than 3% is left and that is more or less privately owned. If you go to Google Earth, you will see you have turned the UK into a farm, not a country, all the little square patches that surround every town and village, is farmland every river is banked by farmlands , natural countryside that has been destroyed to grow food for the endless number of people, and there are that many we are starting to build on farmland, even in our national parks.
This stupidity cannot carry on, people cannot carry on refusing to recognise the problem, and using excuses so they don't have to.
If people want the freedom to camp and roam freely, then there's only one way to do it and that is to reduce the number of people in the country, and start bringing back the natural countryside, so we don't need so much farmlands, so rivers can become free to get to and camp by. So people can go off on their own and enjoy themselves for the weekend, without restrictions upon where they can go and how long they can stay, without somebody making money out of their right to roam freely.
There should be no such thing as wild or stealth camping, there should be no need for it, the reason it exists because there is no land, but nobody wants to talk about it that's the trouble with the UK citizens, nobody wants to deal with the truth, so you or live in make-believe land, so you don't have to.
I'll say it meaning nobody has the courage to say it, we have no countryside, we live in a farm, because we cannot control our numbers, and if it carries on we will destroy everything, you have to have balance between species and landmass to keep a good healthy environment.
When you live in a confined space, like a landmass on a planet, both are confined spaces, so we can not just endlessly multiply into them, that is logical.
When did logic and common sense desert the human species, when it has to recognise it needs restrictions upon its numbers, that's when it threw them two elements out of the window.

    • @facethetruth9987
      @facethetruth9987 9 років тому

***** You are quite right nobody wants to address the problem, you have only got to mention the subject and people go into emotional meltdown.
Because addressing the subject would mean putting restrictions upon the human species and its behaviour, that is something it will not have.
It would rather destroy itself then control its numbers.
Yes" There are a few people that talk and whisper, but that's not going to solve the problem, it needs to be talked about on national television and in national papers and have a open debate on how we are going to control our numbers before we destroy everything including ourselves.

Nice simple 101 introduction to wild camping. I see no reason to be super tough, set fire to your feet and eat moss to prove you are a real man. Comfortable is sustainable. This is good advise and allows the experience of wild camping whilst keeping the wild places pristine for others. Following these rules is a good basis to grow from.

At the end of my garden is 130 miles of some of the most rugged north woods , no play camping unless you want to die.
Stroll in the wrong direction and that could very easily be the end of you.
I'm up near the Canadien border in maine. No fake wild camping here, I don't have the knowledge so I don't play that game.
I've got the gear but it's all about survival skills, if it can go wrong it very well may.

+woodland tomb So common sense and respect doesn't extend to not lighting fires?

    • @Royaltyfreeking1
      @Royaltyfreeking1 8 років тому +4

      +Penny Wood
I would say that it almost certainly does
      Example!
if your freezing to the point of almost hyperthermia and your in the middle of no where but don't want to light a fire because it's illegal
Surly common sense would tell you that nobody is going to know weather you did or you didn't
      Another example !
If you want a fire, have one!
But common sense should tell you that building one the size of a local bonfire, on bonfire night, is not a great idea
      Point proven

    • @Royaltyfreeking1
      @Royaltyfreeking1 8 років тому +7

      +Penny Wood
Not really penny, how many great explorers have planned ahead, just to find the weather has changed unpredictability
      The word there was unpredictable
And this is the example I was giving to you
As far as having a fire while wild camping
All I can say is that if your not doing this penny, then your truly missing out
And you will never get a better outdoor experience then sat amongst mountains and lakes, with a warm fire burning
Fire has been used by man since the cave men days
It's probably one of the main deciding factors, of why we made it here today as a species
I will continue to have a fires, and I will continue to respect the land as much as the next person
So on that note, no health and safety, rules or regulations are ever going to stop me experiencing the great outdoors in the same way that we have for thousands of years :)

At worst you'll be asked to move on. Big whoop. Trespass is a civil offence and not a criminal offence so if you're asked to move on it isn't that much of a problem. Another thing as well - take a look at the Lake District and their website for example - is that provided your wild camp is discreet and you take everything with you wild camping is tolerated despite there being no legal provision.

Great video. Lots of comments about lighting fires, but here in the UK we don't have the vast wilderness that the USA and Canada have and most areas where wild camping occurs are used frequently. If we all lit fires the ground would be a charred mess. Also fire wood can be surprisingly hard to come by in Snowdonia and the Lake District. Oh and we don't have bears or bob cats to scare off either.

might i also add that in many parts of the UK there are underlying deposits of peat which often can react very badly to camp fires sometimes causing subterranean fires that can go for weeks/months/ years. if you must have a fire its your responsibility to know the underlying geology.

I guess when you do an instructional video for someone else, you have to do things by the book. Disappointing to read in the comments how many people are put off by his comments. I know the laws are different in England and Scotland and other parts of the world. I've been wild camping in Scotland for over thirty years, within reason you can camp where you like for as long as you like. I respect people's property and livelihoods and I pride myself in leaving no trace of having camped anywhere. The few times over the years when I've felt it prudent to seek permission has often resulted in cups of coffee, free food, useful local knowledge re routes and wildlife, including a "tame" stag and even lifts up remote glens.
Don't let this video put you off, wild camping should be fun and spontaneous, my campsites are usually chosen for the view or because I'm knackered. Just make sure you respect the land and the people who live and work on it.

Wouldn't even use a tent, just take a closed cell foam roll to keep you away from the ground, a decent doss bag and a goretex bivi bag. You can get goretex bivi with hooped entrances so you can just about sit up in them. All very light, easy to pitch and easy to pack. If I used a tent ide make sure it was pitched a lot better than the flappy thing in the video, looks like it's about to collapse.

The idea is to crap in the bag so you can carry it out and flush down a loo normally when the opportunity arises. This is done to prevent damaging the ecosystem of sensitive areas where you can either introduce unwanted pathogens or upset the nutrient balance in sensitive, or highly frequented areas. It also reduces the risk of contamination of land and/or water sources leading to diseases among humans and wildlife.

If it's only navigable on foot? and he's not carrying a K̶i̶t̶c̶h̶e̶n̶ ̶S̶i̶n̶k̶ Dutch Oven around with him? then in my book it's 'Wild Camping' - there are of course many shades of grey, and some would obviously prefer things to be a bit 'Wilder' and/or 'Stealthier' (perhaps just using a hammock, or even just a bivvy Sack), horses for courses I guess.
Nice Vid, very informative, thanks for sharing.
Whether the tent was pitched properly or not, If i were to be caught-out by the weather & some hurricane called Ivan descended upon my position whilst I was pitched in a valley shaped like a wind tunnel!, then you're darn right I'd be utilising any heavy rocks which happen to be conveniently lying around - good advice.
p.s. If he was b*llock naked and carrying nothing but a Dutch Oven! then I'd call that 'Wid Camping' too

This is the way the term 'wild camping' has been used for decades before the 'bush crafters' came along and hijacked it. Frankly, not knowing that, and misusing it that way just shows how in experienced many of them are.
As for cooking, there are many options from solid fuel, and alcohol though to gas and petrol/diesel. In the UK, in most places, we don't have access to decent supplies of DRY wood, even if you are somewhere where lighting a fire would be safe or legal, so these options are the only sensible way to go.

If you are not traveling tens of miles on foot over thousands of vert feet, car camping from jeep trails out of a lifted 4x4 is one of the best ways to achieve remote comfort in wilderness or national forest/BLM land. Pick a spot using google earth/USGS with good fishing/hunting/rock climbing/prospecting etc and stay a week or more in comfort.
Have a fire if its cold/buggy and legal/safe. Just remember you are culpable for the outcome no matter what the legal status... and they usually find the culprit where I am in the Rockies.

Well, I felt there was a lot of off-point talking without a lot of wild camping advice, or you have to waddle through a lot of narrative to get to anything really pertinent. The first five minutes of the video, for example has no real wild camping advice at all except "don't camp near the road" "don't make fires"...there might have been a few other "don't" things. Then finally comes advice like "put everything in plastic bags". Maybe some meatier information would be more interesting.

Then I can honestly say that you know nothing of substance about the terrain of the UK where there are places which are extremely wild and subject to regular bad weather that, for the purposes of handling emergencies in a timely manner, are as remote as anywhere. Please, don't endanger Mountain Rescue and the other emergency services and stay safely at home with your central heating.

You're not really showing yourself as being that knowledgeable here. This is wild camping, as there term has been used for decades before urban 'wild man' wannabees found UA-cam and started practicing for Darwin Award consideration. As for the gear, it is good advice and I kind of suspect that you don't make the same complaint about all the 'bush crafting' videos which are often wall to wall plugs for items they have been given for free.
RE the tent, however, you are spot on. That tent (I have one) can be pitched very well and can sustain much higher winds than its single hoop design would suggest. I suspect that he only placed it hurriedly for the purpose of filming and, also, that the ground might have been too damp to pitch well and he just moved on to make use of the light and weather.

That tent is brilliant. I have one myself and have used it heavily for over 8 years. It weighs < 900g and is shockingly good in relatively high winds if pitched correctly (tho I'd never consider trusting it in storm force winds, unlike my old Quasar which I have weathered in. The tent in the video was very poorly pitched, and may be on ground that was too damp to get good grip with the stakes.

    • @richardbarrett3809

I have the Wild Country Zephyros which is a very similar tent and use it year-round for wild-camping. The points you have made in posts here are intelligent ones and demonstrate awareness knowledge and experience - something others don't demonstrate so well. I too reckon the tent tent in the video was set up for illustrative filming purposes rather than sleeping in - it would have required attention for the latter use. One thing inexperienced or unknowing critics may not realise is that the Laser and Zephyros tents (and other single-hoop models) are often pitched side-on to a breeze with door facing it - this helps to avoid the fly and condensation on it being blown into contact with the inner tent.

+davi de faria (megamen17ab) You can camp anywhere in Scotland. The rules on access are quite relaxed. Basicly stay away from someones house and the side of the road. Some areas have camping restrictions but these areas are covered by campsites, so on a 5 day wildcamp trip you might only need to use an official site for one night. There are also areas put aside especially for wild camping.
