  • The Family Man is a movie that sets up one reality, then takes place mostly in an alternate reality, and doesn't want you to ask too many questions about how it got there. It just wants your heart.

      No actually its not - punish yourself because of mutual decisions made about what might have been is just sadistic torture - Cage aint getting those decades back and their paths are so far diverged the life that was shown can NEVER materialize. It is an exercise of utter futility. Their kids at the end part of the movie would likely see their parents BURIED before they graduate college or perhaps even HS. There is a reason this movie bombed - it is just a bad story. No disrespect to Cage - but Cage couldn't save writing that bad.

      @@MeshMN First of all... whether it's good or not is your opinion. Look at all the posts on this movie, and by that I mean on all the separate videos, not just this one. They are overwhelmingly positive. Very, very few negative ones. Also you can't judge a movie solely by it's box office performance. Did you know that "The Wizard of Oz", "It's A Wonderful Life", "Shawshank Redemption" , to name three, all did poorly at the theater? They are all considered smash hits, but by your criteria they are no good. You have no idea if the promotion was behind this movie or not. Many movies do great once they are released to rent. So lighten up a little.

    Notice in every scene where the snow is falling around Jack his life is about to change (before entering the store at the beginning & before he goes back to his single life while walking the dog) - at the end while the credits roll, you see them having coffee with snow falling behind them. Their lives were about to change.

    What crushed me was knowing that he'll never be reunited with his children as he knew them. I saw this in the theater with my first love, back in 2000. Even now, I've never loved anyone the way I loved her. We didn't end up making it, and twenty years later, I am Jack Campbell from the universe where she is the Tea Leoni who looks through me. She's got a husband and three boys now, and I'm happy for her. But I can still feel her as I once knew her.

    This movie is beyond words! When I saw it for the first time it affected me greatly because of the mistakes I’ve made in my life. I truly pray to the Lord which I know he won’t do, to let me wake up tomorrow morning next to my wife and my kids in the next room, working at a tire store, living in a blue-collar neighborhood with blue-collar best friends.!

    when this movie came out 20 yrs ago, i felt like i was the only person in my social circle who was truly touched by it. especially being a divorced dad at the time w/a young daughter. so it's nice to see that others also have been moved by it. 'fish out of water' is certainly not a new concept, but i've always felt this film did a much more effective job than many critics gave it credit. also, nicholas cage's character needed a false reality to realize how important love was, or kate was, in his life a decade after leaving his girlfriend at the airport. tea leoni's character (wow she was absolutely fantastic in this role), at end of the movie at another airport, was able to see the same vision from jack that she saw years earlier, without living an alternative life's glimpse. her heart was the one i came away most affected by walking out of the theatre then, and still today,

    I'm at a crossroads in life of where I'm beginning to jump start my career towards the success I've always imagined but at the same time my girlfriend of 4 years wants to settle down and start a family... on the surface I am all for this, and love her a lot. But deep down the thought of having kids and marriage itself kind of scares me when I think more and more about it... I just finished watching this movie for the first time and it definitely gave me perspective. Much needed perspective which I hadn't truly pondered on until I watched this movie. Being single in my late 20s to mid 30s is the peak of a man's life, having a family can interfere with that lifestyle. But at the other hand, if I was to choose my career over my love and possibly starting a family with her, I would be left meaningless and lonely. Much like the protagonist in this movie. I've always dreaded change in my life and also get very emotionally attached to people too... sometimes I'm not sure if I'm with my girlfriend because I love her or because I fear losing her... but deep down I know I am miserable when she is out of the picture because we've had on/off moments. Life is so complicated, relationships make it even more complicated. But it's the special moments that make it all worth it. I hope I make the right decisions.

    • @FilmFlux
      @FilmFlux  2 роки тому +3

      It's always difficult to decide about relationships and futures. As with life there are so many on/off moments, it's hard to know. I think everyone really has to decide for themselves and have a sense of what they want deep down.
      For what it's worth I spent a lot of my 30's single and can report that, while having all my time to myself (for the most part) is great, the evenings and weekends can get tough when the people around you have moved on with families and life.

    This is on my top movies list ~ I have watched it at least 15-20 times. I was such a die hard Nicolas Cage fan, back in the day, that I would positively melt watching him on screen. I honestly don't know if anyone else could have done this role but him, or with Tea Leoni (they have wonderful, unprecedented chemistry together). Absolutely one of my most favorite films during my lifetime ~ a little bit like "It's A Wonderful Life" and "Scrooge". I just watched it the other night. The script is fabulous, and the secondary actors are so good! Don Cheadle is remarkable, and the kids are great. The scenes are wonderful. So darn good! A hard to beat Christmas movie.

    One of the best Christmas movies of all time. Up there with A Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, Home Alone, and The Shop Around the Corner. Actually sort of surprised that modern Hollywood made and released it, to be honest. It's so opposite of most of the other values they push.

      The story goes that Brett Ratner found the script and was so moved by it he fought to make it tirelessly because he felt so strongly that he had to make it. He even did research on Nic Cage and gave the main character things that Cage had (like the car) so when Cage read it he was like, "this is me!"

      @@roman8950 Of course. I love talking about this stuff and I'm just learning myself (though we all are, always). I guess it depends on what kind of critical thinking you want to do, and what format you like to learn in. Articles? UA-cam video essays? Reviews? I'll give you three of my favourite sources to learn from, but I'm happy to talk more about this with you.
      1) FilmCritHulk - Probably the best writer about film in our day. For his early work he talks like the Hulk, and in Hulk speak, so you have to be able to jive with that. His new work is written normally. One of my favourite works of his is about understanding cinematography: birthmoviesdeath.com/2013/01/09/film-crit-hulk-smash-hulk-vs.-tom-hooper-and-art-of-cinematic-affectation
      2) Every Frame a Painting - This is the God of all video essayists. He's a professional editor, so he's got a lot to teach. Here is my favourite video of his on how Jackie Chan does Action: ua-cam.com/video/Z1PCtIaM_GQ/v-deo.html
      3) Roger Ebert - Probably the most legendary voice in film criticism. When he was alive, if I was ever confused about how I felt about a movie (something that still happens all the time) I would go and read his review on it. There's such a simplicity to his writing. He doesn't talk above you, he talks to you. Sometimes he sets the movie in its time period just to help the reader understand. This isn't his best review by any means, but I think about it a lot: The Fountain: www.rogerebert.com/reviews/the-fountain-2006

    Its a great movie. One I think every American need to see, because it shows the contrast between two of the main American Dreams, and what the US has to a degree tried to sell to the world as being the way to live. Now both dreams are a lie outwardly, one is a lie inwardly too....but the other is actually real inwardly, and touches on the deeper essence of what life is supposed to be about.
    Not a nihilistic nothingness living as a accident of nature or "survival of the fittest", but a deeper consciousness which shows that the REAL goes beyond the physical needs, survival, and a pre-determined reality we have no control over or choice in. For those who understand it, its proof that free-will and choice is real, and that we all consist of more than our physical make-up and what we can be taught by parents and society. It shows you the absurdity of seeing materialism as the only reality.
    Yes to see all of that requires a heart, which most people perhaps especially in the US seem to have lost. But I challenge everyone to study and find out which one of the two realities is more real, and which one of them is more fulfilling, purposeful and desirable. This movie hits home with me....as I have 2 or 3 times in my life been faces with the choice presented in this movie. The first time I chose family, the second time I chose career and the third time I chose family again. But it is in choosing the truth as my greatest value that it has been clear to me which of the two realities is better and why.
    You might look at Hollywood and Billionaires and watch how most there try to have it all, but most fail at especially the family life as they try to have a very demanding career. With a world where family life is under attack and it is really tough to find anyone who would choose the family life and so is even worth banking on for such a choice, it should be clear to see what we are loosing and that this loss is NOT evolution.

    Here's my question. Who is Cash? Like what's his deal? What are his goals? Even if it was to get Kate and Jack together they will never get the life he had in the alternate reality. Maybe they get married but their kids, friends, and home will be different. Heck, they themselves will be different. Regardless of how things turn out, that has to be hard to accept. Don't get me wrong, I love the movie but I just think it's going to be a tough uphill climb from their coffee date.

    • @FilmFlux
      @FilmFlux  3 роки тому +1

      I think Cash is purely a plot device. He explains what is happening for the audience, and when Jack asks questions the audience would have, he just gives generic answers.
      The film is more interested in a naive, hopeful look at family life and love. Your questions are valid, but they skirt the fantasy of the movie because they are based in reality.

      Life is never easy and trouble free and I've never heard of a trouble free marriage either that's not even the point of the movie. In the very beginning airport scene, Kate tells Jack “I don’t know what this life is going to look like, but I know it has the both of us in it”. At the end, in another airport, we don’t know what their life is going to look like, but we know they’re both in it together. In the very last frame, as they’re sitting across from each other at the table, Kate reaches out and touches Jack. That’s it. A done deal. True Love wins. ❤️❤️
      That’s the point.

      @@FilmFlux Agreed. Jack seems to have this great life with the wife + kids but there are also well-sanded clues hidden in the movie. Alternate Jack hid a bottle of alcohol in a drawer. Alternate Jack seemed to be on the edge of an affair with a local neighbor. Alternate Jack was probably overshadowed by his father-in-law given he worked at the man's dealership. Life isn't going to be perfect regardless of the path you choose. I felt like the movie papers over some of the 'bad' aspects of the Alternate Jack life, but, yes, it's a fantasy.

    I just watched this last week and for me they are better off single. Glad we are now in 2024 where we don't pushed everyone to get married. The qualify of life is now a goal be it single or double.

    Great movie. But one unfortunate subtext of the movie is that a man should subjugate his ambitions for the sake of the family. This was shown to be the case when Tea convinced Jack not to move up a corporate ladder but instead stick to the comfortable family home.

      Actually what she said specifically was that she would move to the city so he could pursue his dreams "because I choose us." In this moment she's teaching him what love is. I'm not so sure he knew beforehand. Putting others before himself is something he had never done before. I think if she ultimately didn't let him decide, subjugating ones ambitions for the sake of one's family would be a more clear subtext. But he has that option, and he chooses not to take it.

    You are right about these commentary but in reality it does not work that way.
    The best thing I did was to let go and wished her all the best.

    I found this movie morally sadistic.
    Cage is punished for doing a good deed and wanting nothing in return, apparently annoying a disgruntled angel somehow: this angel sends Cage BACK in time where he marries his girlfriend and has a family. The entire movie is Cage trying to reconcile WHY he is there and somehow learns to LOVE his kids - then comes the sadistic part * POOF * they aren't REAL despite the little girl finally saying welcome back Daddy and loving him. The only thing this movie accomplishes is to make people feel bad about all the "what might have been" decisions we all make. This in NO WAY WHATSOEVER teaches Cage about love having lost decades that aren't coming back. Now the writer ATTEMPTS to right the horrendous wrong this entire movie actually is by making Cage somehow decide that after decades passed, oh lets pursue her NOW? Sorry - there is a reason this movie bombed - it's because it is just a horrific story of what might have been.

      Jack (Cage) is shown that, even though he didn't realize it, he wasn't nearly as happy with his life as he thought he was. The glimpse made him realize that he was still in love with Kate after all those years. After the credits roll, I believe that his life is going to be better than it would've been had he not reconnected with her.
