There is just this heartbreaking scene towards the end where, right before his little excursion into this alternate “what if” life is due to end, he is having a quiet talk with his young daughter, and she turns to him and says, “we’re not real, are we?”…but she still tells him he’s a wonderful daddy…and, MAN, I JUST LOST IT watching that!
Literally just watched this for the first time a few nights ago. It’s pretty realistic in it’s depictions of life and love and the ambiguous ending sealed the deal for me ❤
The Family Man deserves more nods in “Best Christmas Movies” rankings. Not only is it a wonderful Christmas movie it’s also a thought provoking alternate-universe story. As a father and husband I think I’ll revisit it this year.
Seeing Jack’s Ferrari in the trailer for The Family Man drove me to the theater as a teenager. Trivia Time: The Ferrari once belonged to Nicholas Cage and Brett Rattner didn’t know this until filming time.
This is one of the best movies about this topic.. I love the fact that there's a "magical" world where angels/agents came to earth to give people a glimpse of a life that could have been.. Also, the score is beautiful and the acting is top.. Super recommended!!
I’ve seen him in other films but this is his best one in my opinion. The sincerity and authenticity he brings to it is so real. The supporting cast was also incredible and made the film come to life.
I'm surprised you didn't point out that this film is a "reverse riff" on It's a Wonderful Life. Rather than show George how wonderful his life truly is, it is how his life COULD have been wonderful if he had married his sweetheart. Don Cheadle even does the "I saved you" when doing a crime just like the angle does when he jumps off the bridge and makes George save him. I think the story is a lot less clever when you realize it is a riff on It's a Wonderful Life, but Téa Leoni is always delightful to watch.
This guy has definitely never seen Its a Wonderful Life. He even transferred Its a Wonderful Life's legacy of ripoffs onto this movie giving it credit for creating the trope.
This is a go to movie every Christmas. And for the record Kate hugged him first when he came back home on Christmas morning because she was glad he was alive. There is nothing science fiction about that. She then went off on him. He had to tell her to please stop yelling at him. Come on man.
watching this for the first time last night at the age of 72 it was as impactful as 'it's a wonderful life' at 12 ... all the what ifs and shoulda woulda coulda-s ??? so many critical nodes and turning points .. all the roads not taken .. what if all's well doesn't end well ??
My brother was an extra in this movie. Cage runs into him at the airport near the end of the film. My brother was told not to look at Nicolas Cage directly in the eyes…
I didn’t know what to expect when I first saw the film because Brett Ratner was directing, whose movies outside of Rush Hour 1-2 I disliked, but it was actually quite good
This is a good film, Tea Leoni was a very good pick for her part. The little girl that played his daughter was adorable. Nicholas Cage, Don Cheadle, etc made this movie funny. This is like a Scrooge & Its a Wonderful Life mix imo. I love this under-rated film, thanks for covering it, JoBlo. Have a Happy New Year!! 🎉🎉🎉
I’m in the same vote when you said, “I saw it young and didn’t think much of it.” I saw it when I was young and I really didn’t think much of it. However, I saw it again when it came on TV and I gotta say it’s an underrated cute film. 🎥. I recommend it!
Doubling your budget in the early 2000's was considered "breaking even"? 🤔 Yes, these days marketing, especially for a blockbuster, can cost a lot, but i doubt the studio spent much on marketing that one... Otherwise, great video & thanks for the memories! I'll likely rewatch it this week if I can find it streaming somewhere.
I've always loved this, and I trace it to being the single most mindchanging movie for me with Nicolas Cage. Before this, I struggled to ever care for him, but this performance totally changed my mind. I'm not really into Christmas movies all that much, so when people ask what my favorite X-Mas movie, this is often the 1 I answer with. Also, I recall it has been considered a remake of Miracle on 34th Street (although the Scrooge similarities are pretty obvious).
I watch this movie every christmas season. Its my favorite nic cage movie and christmas movie. The whole glipse thing makes it stay with you for a long time, I almost believe Jack Campbell exists in New Jersey and is still living with Kate both growing old.
Nic Cage is having a run man... maybe not quite like McConaughey did 10 years ago but very similar.. So happy for him. I just watched Dream Scenario and that's like the 3rd or 4th movie in a row that he crushed. He's just a great actor that not only loves acting but also loves movies.
I adore this movie for so many reasons. But somehow it makes me so sad that Kate in "real life" isn't the same sweet and simple Kate in his dream sequence. It's like losing him turned her into a completely different person. And the ambiguous ending kills me. I want to know if they got back together and had kids!! But they wouldn't be the same two kida which is also sad. 😢
Even thought never had the chance to enjoy it in the theater, still remember the one xmas that I found it in cable and pleasantly surprised by the story.
I'v seen this movie in cinema back then, and have watched it almost every christmas since then. A few years ago I bought the blu ray so I'm not dependent of tv broadcasts. It is still my favourite movie of all time. There is just something magical about this movie, hard to describe.
another good one from Chris B, the movie grows on u and initially who would have thought that a hack like Ratner could manage this, it mostly comes down to Cage and Leoni's central performances .... definite classic
It’s funny that you compare this to Scrooge. I have come to call this movie “It Could Have Been A Wonderful Life” and even Cages mannerisms in this are very reminiscent of James Stuart
@@JoBloOriginals Yeah sure. Like I'm sure they keep living in that dimension with their old dad. But from his perspective they're dead. He'll never see them again. And he doesn't seem that bothered. It was him bonding with the kids that made him tell Don Cheadle that he can never send him back to his old life. Then they vanish forever and not even a tear 🤷♂
@SonnyK248 there's no need for tears, some pains are stored and learn from them. Also, not everything is death by blood, they just dissappear. Maybe it's like a dream implanted in his brain, like the Vanilla Sky movie, they never really existed. That's how I see it
@@matute33 come on man do you have kids? I do and when he lost his in the movie it cut me thinking he wasn't going to see them again. Especially the girl. He doesn't have to go full Brando and fall to his knees screaming their name but at least acknowledge that these kids who were his flesh and blood and he did bond with to the point that he didn't want his old life back because of them are now gone forever. He didn't even bring up the fact that they were gone at all... That should have been a huge story point when he went back. Like he can get the girl again but he will never see his kids again.
Wow. Way to throw in your bitter distain for Christians there toward the end. Maybe one day you’ll see that belief in Christ is paramount; and all the other earthy things that you seem to think are so much more important to focus on, are actually just silly in comparison.
Can't emphasize how much of an underrated movie this is. Definitely a must watch during the holidays.

That must be a bonus scene because I didn’t get to see that in the version I watched. That would’ve choked me up too!
@@KraftyYeah, that would have destroyed me. I’m glad they stuck with the line “I’m going back to the mothership.”

Definitely one of my favourite Christmas movies of all time, and my favourite dramatic Nicholas Cage performance.
He’s actually a really good actor, despite him being a joke to a lot of people
This movie made me realize you gotta move on but also, if it’s worth it. Fight for it, and understand that it will never come again.

had the same thought, this movie is nothing like a christmas carol save for being at christmas and having a supernatural element.

watched it a few days ago. saw it in theatres when I was a kid. hits different when you're single and alone on Christmas.
and maybe hits different when you are 60+ years old ....
I watch this almost every holiday and it really hits you in the feels. Just watched it yesterday, such a good movie.
_Jesus._ Is anyone left? Anyone _not cancelled_ these days? 😂

Probably brett ratners best movie that isnt rush hour 1 and 2
Really enjoyed this film when I saw it years ago. Probably worth a rewatch now that I'm a dad and the idea of a life without kids is horrifying.
Great review, but after Tea gives Jack a hug for missing on most of Christmas Day, she does yell at him. Other than that, terrific video!
Excellent Christmas film, i watch it every year .
This and trapped in paradise are two cage christmas gems
Wait...what happened to Jeremy Piven? What did he do?
I looked it up, I didn't know either. Alleged se*ual allegations. But there was no outcome on anything. Have a Happy New Year! 🎉

Thats mostly because Ratner and Cage have become walking, talking jokes.

Was Nicolas Cage considered a heartthrob back then for women? Because a lot of the shots show him sometimes clean cut, and when shirtless kinda fit.
Yeah, he probably was around that time, especially after the successful 'Con air' in 97 .
Its a remake of its a wonderful life

It's a great movie. But the fact that his children essentially die when he returns to his old life isn't really expressed enough on Cage's character.
